Absence of mutagenic effect of Mikania glomerata hydroalcoholic extract on adult wistar rats in vivo BABT
Sá,Rita de Cássia da Silveira e; Leite,Magda Narciso; Peters,Vera Maria; Guerra,Martha de Oliveira; Almeida,Reinaldo Nóbrega de.
This work makes an assessment of the dominant lethality of Mikania glomerata in male Wistar rats. Adult male received 1 mL of M. glomerata hydroalcoholic extract at a dose level of 3.3 g/kg body weight for 52 days and were mated with untreated females for seven weeks (group 1) or one week prior to the beginning of treatment and on the week following the end of treatment (group 2). The parameters analyzed were: number of implanted embryos, resorptions and corpora lutea; mating, gestation, preimplantation loss, implantation and resorption indexes (group 1); number of offspring and weaning animals (group 2). The administration of M. glomerata did not show any impairment of fertility and no significant difference in the parameters analyzed, suggesting an...

Hormonal and Histomorphologic Effects of Azadirachta indica leaf Extract on the Pars Anterior of Wistar Rats International Journal of Morphology
Akpantah,Amabe O; Ekong,Moses B; Obeten,Kebe E; Akpaso,Mfon I; Ekanem,Theresa B.
Azadirachta indica is a tree whose medicinal value is unquantifiable. Any part of the tree can be used in the treatment of malarial infection. Reports have indicated its antifertility effects, and this necessitated this study on the effects of the methanol leaf extract on serum luteinizing (LH) and follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) levels and the histomorphology of the pars anterior of Wistar rats. Thirty adult male Wistar rats were equally divided into 3 groups of A, B and C. Group A was the control and the animals received distilled water orally, while groups B and C were treated with 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg respectively of the leaf extract by oral gavage for fourteen days. On day fifteen, the animals were sacrificed by chloroform anaesthesia. Blood was...

Malnutrition and Somatic Development: Application of Protocol of Mensuration to Evaluation of Indicators of Wistar Rats International Journal of Morphology
Silva,Hilton Justino da; Barros,Karla Mônica Ferraz Teixeira de; Cunha,Daniele Andrade da; Santos,Francisco de Assis da Silva; Soares,Elisângela Barros; Silva,Clécia Natália de Siqueira da; Moraes,Silvia Regina Arruda de; Castro,Raul Manhães de.
This study analyzed the consequence of malnutrition and/or serotoninergic manipulation during the period of fast growth of encephalon on the somatic development in rats. It was used the protocol of measurement of indicators of this development proposed by Silva et al., 2005. The protocol was applied from 1st to 21st day and rats were breastfed by female which received control diet (commercial diet, Labina) with 23% of protein, normoproteic diet, nourished animals (Group Nourished Nour), n=15 or were breastfed by female which after the delivery received hypoproteic diet (Regional Basic Diet RBD), with 8% of protein, malnourished animals (Group Malnourished Maln) n=15. It were observed in the group malnourished a decrease of corporal weight from 4th...

Protocol of Mensuration to Avaliation of Indicators of Somatic Development of Wistar Rats International Journal of Morphology
Silva,Hilton Justino da; Marinho,Sônia Maria Oliveira Cavalcanti; Silva,Ana Elisa Toscano Meneses da; Albuquerque,Claudio Gonçalves de; Moraes,Silvia Regina Arruda de; Manhães de Castro,Raul.
Evaluations of weight and cephalic perimeter are very used to study the growth and development in human beings. Similar measures, called murinometrics, have been an efficient resource to study the effects of nutritional and pharmacologic manipulations on the somatic development in rat. The aim of this study is to describe a method of evaluation which offers a higher accuracy in the collect of data in the study of somatic development in Wistar rat. Measurements were realized in latero-lateral axis of skull; Antero-posterior axis of skull; Longitudinal axis; Length of tail in 60 wistar rat during breastfeeding period. The most suitable method of measurement respects predetermined anatomic points, the use of the suitable scapus of pachymeter as well as its...

The Histo-morphometric Evidences of Vernonia amygdalina Leaf Extract-induced Testicular Toxicity International Journal of Morphology
Saalu,L. C; Akunna,G. G; Oyewopo,A. O.
Vernonia amygdalina (bitter-leaf) is native to West Africa but occurs mostly in its cultivated form in various parts of central and southern Nigeria. It is a dark-green leafy vegetable commonly used in cooking and as folkloric medicine for the management of several diseases in Nigeria. In the present study, the effects of varying doses of ethanolic leaf extract of Vernonia amygdalina on the rat testis histo-morphometry were investigated. Forty male wistar rats were divided into groups of four. Group A, as the control was given 10 ml/kg/day/oral distilled water while Group B, C and D subsequently treated with 100, 300 and 600 mg/kg/day/oral route Vernonia amygdalina leaves extract respectively for 56 days. Results showed that Group B rats had normal testis...
