BACKGROUND: The hippocampal CA3 area contains large amounts of vesicular zinc in the mossy fiber terminals which is released during synaptic activity, depending on presynaptic calcium. Another characteristic of these synapses is the presynaptic localization of high concentrations of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors, specifically activated by DCG-IV. Previous work has shown that DCG-IV affects only mossy fiber-evoked responses but not the signals from associational-commissural afferents, blocking mossy fiber synaptic transmission. Adaptive and cross-protective responses against cadmium and zinc toxicity in cadmium-resistant bacterium isolated from a zinc mine BJM

Cadmium (Cd) is a major environmental hazard, which usually is detected in its ionic form of Cd2+. It also causes adverse toxic effects on human health and other living organisms. Cd-resistant bacteria were isolated from Cd-contaminated soils. One isolate, TAK1, was highly resistance level to Cd toxicity. TAK1 was isolated from soil contaminated with a high Cd concentration (204.1 mg.kg-1). The result of 16S rDNA sequence analysis found that the TAK1 showed the similarity to Ralstonia sp. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and auxin associated with microelements in the development of cuttings of Varronia leucocephala AGRIAMBI

ABSTRACT The plant Varronia leucocephala is widely used in Brazil for its therapeutic properties. However, a major problem for the seedlings is the low percentage of root formation. The objective of this study was to establish a rooting protocol for V. leucocephala cuttings, using phytoregulators and microelements associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The auxin indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentration of 1500 mg L-1 showed the best rooting percentage, and it is proposed associating the microelements zinc and boron with the highest IBA doses. In Brazil, plant-available micronutrients in the soil can be determined by several chemical extractants, the most common of which are dilute acid and chelating solutions. The purpose of this study was to assess the extractants 0.1 mol L-1 HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA for analysis of the micronutrients Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in soils from the state of Paraná. In samples from 12 soils (0-20 cm layer), wheat was planted (Triticum aestivum), grown for 42 days after emergence, and then bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for 38 days. This work aimed to evaluate density of associative diazotrophic bacteria populations in soil and grass root samples from heavy metal contaminated sites, and to characterize isolates from these populations, both, phenotypically (Zinc, Cadmium and NaCl tolerance in vitro, and protein profiles) and genotypically (16S rDNA sequencing), as compared to type strains of known diazotrophic species. De um modo geral, as concentracoes de zinco nas braquiarias sao bastante baixas, nao atendendo as necessidades de bovinos em pastejo na maioria das categorias. As vacas de cria formam a categoria do rebanho mais predisposta a esse tipo de deficiencia, por seus elevados requisitos nutricionais, ao tempo que permanecem no rebanho, e por serem destinadas a elas geralmente as piores areas de pastagens. Resultados de analises de forrageiras nativas e cultivadas das areas de cerrado, realizadas no laboratorio da Embrapa Gado de Corte, demonstraram que 90% das amostras apresentaram teores de Zn abaixo do nível considerado minimo (20 ppm) para um bom desempenho animal. Resumo: O mel brasileiro é produzido principalmente por abelhas africanizadas a partir do néctar ou da secreção das plantas e, devido às suas características genéticas dessas espécies de abelhas, dispensa o uso de antibióticos e pesticidas, como acaricidas e fungicidas. A composição das amostras de méis está intimamente relacionada com o tipo de florada utilizada por estas abelhas para a elaboração do produto final. Um dos componentes de grande importância são os minerais presentes no mel que representam de 0,02% a 1%. Dentre estes minerais observamos os chamados metais pesados, que podem indicar tanto a origem geográfica do mel quanto o nível de poluição ambiental por estes metais. Bioaccumulation of metals by Mugil saliens under chronic exposure to contamined sediments: Gill histopathological changes IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The Esmoriz/Paramos coastal lagoon, is a habitat of ecological importance due to the presence of unique animal and plant species. During the past few years its immersed area has been gradually reduced due to effluent discharges and siltation. The major contaminants in the lagoon are derived from a multitude of nonpoint sources associated with urbanization and industrial activities within the watershed. Heavy metals are probably a class of pollutants contributing to the observed decline of fish species. The metal content in the water and sediments in the lagoon were investigated as well as gill metal bioaccumulation and gill histopathological changes of the grey leaping mullet, Mugil saliens.

The aims of this work was screening the potential production of bioemulsifier by microorganisms isolated from an oil contaminated mangrove, and evaluate cadmium and zinc removal potential of those strains from a hazardous industrial residue. Selected trace elements (Cd, Cu, Hg, Se, Zn) were measured in the kidneys and the liver of 104 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded along the coasts of France, Galicia (Spain), Ireland, Scotland (UK), and the Netherlands. Generally, relatively low concentrations of toxic elements were encountered in the tissues of European porpoises, except for two individuals, which displayed high hepatic Hg concentrations. Also, elevated Cd levels obtained in Scottish porpoises could be related to their feeding preferences and this result suggests an increase of the proportion of cephalopods in their diet with latitude. Avaliou-se o efeito de tratamentos que associaram cinco doses de calcario e duas doses de micronutrientes aplicados a um solo Gley Pouco Humico do municipio de Goianira, GO, sobre a producao de graos e absorcao de nutrientes pelas plantas de arroz irrigado (cultivares Cica-8 e BR IRGA-409) e de feijoeiro (cultivar Carioca e linhagem LM 30030), em cultivos sucessivos e alternados. A calagem nao influenciou a producao de graos das duas culturas, e os micronutrientes causaram aumento significativo (p<0,05) apenas da producao de graos de feijoeiro. ABSTRACT Forty Nelore cattle were used to evaluate the effects of supplementation with different antioxidants on carcass characteristics and meat quality of feedlot cattle. Animals were fed Brachiaria brizantha hay and subjected to five treatments (control and four antioxidants: zinc, selenium, vitamin E, and selenium + vitamin E). After a 105-day feeding period, cattle were slaughtered. Tissue composition, as well as carcass proximate composition, color, tenderness, pH, and fatty acid profile were evaluated. Analysis of variance was carried out and means compared by Tukey test at 0.05 probability. Changes in nitrate reductase activity and oxidative stress response in the moss Polytrichum commune subjected to chromium, copper and zinc phytotoxicity Braz. J. Plant Physiol.

The main aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) on nitrate reductase (NR) activity and oxidative stress responses in the moss Polytrichum commune. Cr, Cu and Zn resulted in the inhibition of NR activity. A decline in total chlorophyll content was observed after 24 and 48 h of metal treatment. Accumulation of the metals showed a dose and time dependent increase. High accumulation of Cu, Cr and Zn were seen in moss shoots after 24 and 48 h of treatment. Treatment of Cr, Cu and Zn for 24 or 48 h resulted in the increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content in moss shoots. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da cobertura do solo com aveia preta e manutenção da palha sobre o terreno, bem como cobertura do solo com filme de polietileno preto, sobre a produção de biomassa e teores de Mn e Zn, em alface cultivada no sistema orgânico, por dois anos consecutivos. Comportamento de espécies herbáceas em misturas de solo com diferentes graus de contaminação com metais pesados. Repositório Alice

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, em casa de vegetação, o comportamento de espécies herbáceas em relação ao excesso de Cd e Zn no solo. O gradiente de contaminação foi estabelecido a partir de mistura de solo contaminado com solo sem contaminação em diferentes proporções. As sementes foram semeadas em tubetes contendo 250 mL de solo, e após 90 dias as plantas foram colhidas e avaliadas. A maioria das espécies apresentou redução no crescimento com aumento da contaminação do solo e elevadas concentrações de Cd e Zn na matéria seca da parte aérea (MSPA), na mistura com 15% de solo contaminado.
