Terpineol, a volatile terpenoid alcohol of low toxicity, is widely used in the perfumery industry. It is an important chemical constituent of the essential oil of many plants with widespread applications in folk medicine and in aromatherapy. The effects of terpineol on the compound action potential (CAP) of rat sciatic nerve were studied. Terpineol induced a dose-dependent blockade of the CAP. At 100 µM, terpineol had no demonstrable effect. At 300 µM terpineol, peak-to-peak amplitude and conduction velocity of CAP were significantly reduced at the end of 180-min exposure of the nerve to the drug, from 3.28 ± 0.22 mV and 33.5 ± 7.05 m/s, respectively, to 1.91 ± 0.51 mV and 26.2 ± 4.55 m/s. At 600 µM, terpineol significantly reduced peak-to-peak amplitude... |

Torch ginger Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith is a tropical herb-like, rhizome-like and perennial plant that possesses inflorescences that are both pretty and showy at different colour shades, and have a great visual appeal. Producing seedlings at a high enough level when done conventionally by the division of tussocks, has high costs and phytosanitary problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the induction of somatic embryogenesis and its potential for subsequent plant regeneration in torch ginger. Rhizomes, leaves and roots from the seedlings grown in vitro were used as explant segments. The different explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 30 g L-1 sucrose, and it was solidified with 5.5 g L-1 of agar. The effect of 2.4-D... |

Alpinia zerumbet is an aromatic and medicinal plant rich in essential oil, known as colônia. Essential oils are derived from secondary metabolism and may be a source of raw materials for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food and perfumery industry. The plant secondary metabolism and biosynthetic activity can vary according to endogenous and exogenous factors to which it is exposed. In this context, in this study we evaluated the influence of harvest time and plant age of Alpinia zerumbet on biomass and essential oil production. For the harvest time experiment the plants of A. zerumbet were harvested at different times (8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 h), using a completely randomized design with four replications. In the plant age experiment the seedlings were... |

This work aimed at the assessment of the influence of 1-MCP on ethrel action and on its association with preservative solutions on torch ginger. In the first experiment, the inflorescences were pre-treated with 1-MCP in sealed chambers at concentrations of 0, 1, 1.5, and 2.0 g m-3, for 24 hours. Later, the inflorescences were submitted to the treatment with ethrel (100 µL L-1) in sealed chamber for 24 hours. In the second experiment, the inflorescences were pre-treated with 1.5 g m-3 of 1-MCP for 24 hours, being posteriorly transferred to vases containing water, Flower® , Florissant® , and water without 1-MCP pre-treatment. The fresh matter and the quality of the inflorescence were daily appraised using the scale grading. The best... |

Abstract: This study aims to identify phenolic compounds in dichloromethane and methanolic extracts of the rhizome of Renealmia nicolaioides collected in the North Region of Brazil. Two known diarylheptanoids, 1,7-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-(1E)-1-hepten-3-one (1), and 5R-1,7-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1E-hepten-5-ol (2), and a new one (1R,2S,5S)-2-hydroxy-1,7(p-hydroxyphenyl)-centrolobine (3), as well as one flavonoid, 3-metoxi-quercetin (4) were isolated by chromatographic procedure and identified by spectroscopic techniques (1H and13C NMR, HRMS and CD). The acetyl derivative of 2 was used to confirm its structure. All four compounds are reported for the first time for this genus, and this is the first occurrence of compound 1 as a natural metabolite. The results... |
