Feeding behaviour of adult European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) was studied in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) in relation to major abiotic and biotic factors. Observations were made during the main spawning period (summer) for two years, data were collected through hydrological pro-tiling, zooplankton hauls and fish trawling performed in areas of high anchovy density. Temperature, salinity and zooplankton biomass were stratified in the study areas, with cladocerans numerous above the thermocline whereas copepods were dominant below. Engraulis encrasicolus was strictly zooplanctivorous during the main spawning season with copepod and crustacean larvae dominating in stomach contents. Anchovy exhibited high trophic activity during the... |

The qualitative and quantitative evolution of a zooplanktonic population growing in a concrete tank after enrichment and production of a phytoplanktonic bloom has been followed during a time exceeding six weeks. After an initial unsteady period and a temporary peak of rotiferas, a progressive increase of organism abundance was observed, with a corresponding reduction of their specific diversity. During the last phase of the experiment, the zooplankton community was qualitatively similar with the populations described in harbour waters or other semi-closed or closed marine spaces characterized by eutrophy and pollution. It was chiefly composed of copepods from Acartia, Tisbe and Oithona generas. The numerical density of organisms was,to a great... |

Choosing the best conditions for the cultivation of plankton in tanks is a difficult deal, which is generally solved by means of subjective estimations. A better way of looking for these conditions is the use of a mathematical model. _ We have tried to built a model that accounts for the physical and biological characteristics of the tanks. The data concerning the physiological characteristics of the different group of organisms encountered are too scarce to allow all of them to be taken into account. The system studied here is composed of nutrients, phytoplankton, herbivorous copepods and rotifers to which benthic algae have been added. With the hypothesis of 3 elements (phyto - zooplankton - nutrients) it can be showed that when an equilibrium is... |

Approximately 7000 marine zooplanktonic species have been described so far for the World Ocean; in the South Atlantic the presence of 40% of these has been confirmed, and an additional 20-30% are expected to be recorded in the future. The overall number of described species is very low when compared with other communities, and yet it may not be too far from the final, complete inventory. Very ample geographic distributional ranges, compositional similarity between the major oceanic basins, and declining species description rates suggest that the undescribed fraction of marine zooplankton is nowhere as large as those suggested for the biosphere as a whole. It is anticipated that the highest proportions of new species will be among the groups associated.... |

Data collected during cruises of the Former Soviet Union (in 1963-1989) and the British Atlantic meridional transect program (in 1995-1999) were used to analyse macroscale patterns in phyto- and zooplankton biomass, size structure, species diversity, chlorophyll a, and plankton bioluminescence in the macroscale anticyclonic gyre of the South Atlantic Ocean. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll a, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Among the 416 copepod species recorded in samples, 51 species were... |
