A comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the Mortierellales (Mortierellomycotina) based on nuclear ribosomal DNA Naturalis
Wagner, L.; Stielow, B.; Hoffmann, K.; Petkovits, T.; Papp, T.; Vágvölgyi, C.; Hoog, G.S. de; Verkley, G.; Voigt, K..
The basal fungal order Mortierellales constitutes one of the largest orders in the basal lineages. This group consists of one family and six genera. Most species are saprobic soil inhabiting fungi with the ability of diverse biotransformations or the accumulation of unsaturated fatty acids, making them attractive for biotechnological applications. Only few studies exist aiming at the revelation of the evolutionary relationships of this interesting fungal group. This study includes the largest dataset of LSU and ITS sequences for more than 400 specimens containing 63 type or reference strains. Based on a LSU phylogram, fungal groups were defined and evaluated using ITS sequences and morphological features. Traditional morphology-based classification schemes...

Anti-Zygomycetes activity of 7-hydroxycalamenene isolated from Croton cajucara. Repositório Alice
AZEVEDO, M. M.; ALMEIDA, C. A.; BIZZO, H. R.; CHAVES, F. C.; ALVIANO, D. S.; ALVIANO, C. S..
The leaves and bark from Croton cajucara Benth. (family Euphorbiaceae), a shrub from the Amazon, have been used locally used in folk medicine to treat diabetes, malaria, gastrointestinal and liver disorders [1]. The essential oil from the leaves is rich in linalool [2] and presented antileishmanial and antimicrobial activities [3,4].

Diversity of mycobiota in colonies of different species of leaf-cutting ants and sampling sites across Argentina Ecología austral
Marfetan,Jorge A; Folgarait,Patricia J.
Attine ants are a monophyletic group comprising more than 230 species, distributed exclusively in the New World. All higher Attini ants depend on the cultivation of fungus gardens for food, and those gardens are continuously exposed to alien microorganisms. The present work describes, for the first time, the composition, relative frequency and the richness of the fungal species comprising the mycobiota from the garden of the most abundant Acromyrmex species from different regions of Argentina. We also compared, using a multivariate approach, the mycobiota composition with the purpose of testing two hypotheses: 1) whether mycobiota is defined by the ant species, or 2) whether mycobiota is determined by the geographical region. We found that each fungal...

Isolation of Mucorales from processed maize (Zea mays L.) and screening for protease activity BJM
Santiago,André Luiz Cabral Monteiro de Azevedo; Motta,Cristina Maria de Souza.
Mucoraleswere isolated from maize flour, corn meal and cooked cornflakes using surface and depth plate methods. Rhizopus oryzae, Circinella muscae, Mucor subtilissimus,Mucor hiemalis f. hiemalis, Syncephalastrum racemosum, Rhizopus microsporus var. chinensis and Absidia cylindrospora showed protease activity.

Polyphosphate in Zygomycetes: a cytochemical study BJM
Shari'a,Allana Elesbão do Nascimento; Nascimento,Aline Elesbão do; Lima,Marcos Antonio Barbosa de; Campos-Takaki,Galba Maria de; Souza,Wanderley de.
The inorganic phosphorus content, and distribution, structure and localization of polyphosphate in mycelia of zygomycetous fungi was evaluated. Ultrastructural cytochemistry was successfully used to identifying the localization and distribution of polyphosphate in Absidia cylindrospora, Gongronella butleri and Mucor javanicus. The results revealed differences in the cytochemical staining pattern in all species studied and a uniform labeling on the cellular surface (cell wall and citoplasmic membrane). Reaction products were observed in intracellular structures and cellular membrane. Intracellular staining was observed in trabecullar, vacuolar and vesicular structures, in dense bodies and in the cytoplasm. However, the cytochemical staining intensity varied...

Use of Bioscreen C for growth of Mucor hiemalis in different carbon and nitrogen sources BJM
Tauk-Tornisielo,Sâmia Maria; Vieira,Joelma Maurício; Govone,José Silvio.
The automated Bioscreen C system was used for growth of four Mucor hiemalis strains isolated from the soil in the Juréia-Itatins Ecology Station (JIES), São Paulo state, in liquid culture media containing different carbon (2%) and nitrogen (1%) sources, pH 5.0, at 25ºC, and agitated at 150 rpm for 5 days. The medium containing only one nitrogen source had been added with 2% glucose. The readings were taken at lambda = 540 nm, at 2-hour intervals, up to five days. The results were compared using the Friedman Test (alpha = 5%). The best growth was obtained for strains M1, M2 and M3, reaching the log phase in 60 hours. The best carbon sources varied according to the strain, and yeast extract proved to be the best nitrogen source. Sodium acetate inhibited the...
