During 10 years a crop rotation schedule consisting of different crops (green fallow; intercrop: winter wheat; peas; intercrop: winter rye; summer barley) was combined with three different tillage techniques (plough, inverting to 30 cm depth, intensive; two-layer plough, inverting to 15 cm depth and loosening to 30 cm depth, reduced inverting; layer cultivator, loosening to 30 cm depth, conservation tillage). First results show a significant effect of crop on springtails. There is no significant effect of tillage techniques, although there is a tendency in slightly increased population density of springtails by using plough and layer cultivator. Further detailed results will be reported elsewhere. |

A key challenge in improving the sustainability of organic poultry production is meeting the required levels of nutrients from locally sourced organic feeds. 100% organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015. The ICOPP project brings together knowledge, from 10 EU countries, of local feeds for monogastrics and their wider impact on growth, health and welfare and the environment to identify feeding strategies which comply with organic principles. This poster will report on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK by FAI and ORC to investigate the impact of algae, peas and lupins on broiler performance and welfare. |

Current regulations for organic pig and poultry production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns that a 100 % organic diet would be unable to meet the demand for the essential amino acids lysine and methionine. 100 % organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, and so there is an urgent need to develop economically profitable feeding strategies based on organic feed across Europe. Feeding trials carried out with Gloucester old spot pigs in the UK found that there was no significant difference in the weight gains across the diets until the last week of the trial when there a significant difference in weight increase for the male pigs on the bean diet. This suggests that a... |

Current regulations for organic monogastric production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns about meeting the demand for the essential amino acids methionine and lysine. However, 100 % organic diets will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, so there is a need to develop feeds which will supply the required level of nutrients and support high animal health and welfare. This paper reports on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK to investigate the impact of three 100 % organic diets: a control diet with globally sourced ingredients, a diet based on locally sourced (i.e. within Europe) organic ingredients, and a diet based on locally sourced organic ingredients and algae. The results of... |

Rations of 100% organic and local origin were tested. Up to 18% of thermally proc-essed rape cake was fed in different rations to two groups of laying hens. Faba beans, Vicia sativa and blue lupines were used as protein supplements to create a feeding ration. High vicine and covicine contents, especially in Vicia sativa, led to a refusal of some food rations. No ration has been found suitable for daily use. Chicken fed with a rape cake ration laid eggs with a positive fatty acid pattern, which is favourable for human diets. |

An analysis of the effect of 15 years of research in organic food systems in Denmark showed that it has had a high impact on the development of the sector. There are three main reasons: First of all, the content of research programs and the funded projects have been closely aligned with the needs of the industry as expressed by farmers, advisors and organizations. Second, many of the projects have had close contact to advisors and farmers securing continuous dissemination resulting in rapid application of results. Third, due to the close contact between researchers and users the research design has been adapted to ensure that treatments to be tested are as relevant and practical as possible, without compromising the scientific standards. Besides the... |

This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut. |

People’s growing awareness of health, environment and animal welfare has led to an increased public interest in the quality of foods and food production systems. This in turn boosted organic production. Due to higher production costs, organic produce tends to retail at a higher price than their conventional counterparts. As a consequence of the premium price, organic produce is susceptible to fraud. Fair competition between producers and sustained consumer confidence favour organic production, and it requires regular confirmatory assessments of the identity of organic produce in addition to administrative controls. Traditional analytical strategies for guaranteeing quality and uncovering adulteration have relied on the determination of the amount of a... |
