The forage mass, sward structure, the ingestive and grazing behavior and forage intake by goats grazing on Tanzania-grass at 22 and 37 days of regrowth were evaluated. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with eight replications for evaluating the pasture and bite depth, and six replications for evaluating intake, feeding and grazing behavior. The forage canopy height ranged from 64.1 to 92.7 cm. Higher forage mass was observed at 37 days, and the best leaf/stem ratio, at 22 regrowth days. The bite depth did not differ between regrowth ages. The biting rate for the 22 regrowth days (23.07 bites min.-1) was higher than at 37 days (19.06 bites min.-1). The grazing time was longer at the regrowth age of 22 days (5.58h) than at 37 days...

Forage supply in thinned Caatinga enriched with buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) grazed by goats and sheep - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v34i2.12548 Animal Sciences
Formiga, Luiza Daiana Araújo da Silva; Universidade Federal de Campina Grande; Pereira Filho, José Morais; Universidade Federal de Campina Grande; Silva, Aderbal Marcos de Azevêdo; Universidade Federal de Campina Grande; Oliveira, Nadjanara Souza; Universidade Federal de Campina Grande; Soares, Diogo da Costa; Universidade Federal de Campina Grande; Bakke, Olaf Andreas; Universidade Federal de Campina Grande.
Forage supply from herbs was assessed in a thinned Caatinga enriched with buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) exposed to goat and sheep grazing. The 2.4 ha experimental area, located at the Experimental Station of the Federal University of Campina Grande, in Santa Terezinha, Paraíba State, Brazil, was divided into four 0.6 ha paddocks, which were further subdivided into two 0.3 ha experimental plots. Twelve F1 (Boer x SRD) goats and 12 Santa Inês sheep were divided in four groups of six animals of the same species. The herbaceous vegetation was separated into buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.), dicotyledons and other grass species. Treatments were randomized to plots according to a completely random design with two treatments, four replications, with...
