The IOTC initiated a discussion to organize a large scale tagging program concerning the major tropical tuna species and fisheries. According to the terms of reference for the working party on tagging (Anon., 1999), prospective simulations are needed to help designing tag -recapture experiments. The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology developed to help designing the future tagging program. It is based on three stages: tag recovery simulations with an habitat -based advection-diffusion-reaction model; bootstrapping of the recovery data sets; population parameter estimation and comparison of scenarii. The African Region consists of 48 countries and five island nations, most of which are practising some form of aquaculture, often at a very low level. Over half the countries report producing less than 100 mt annually. The largest producer is Nigeria (17 700 mt) followed by Madagascar (5 100 mt) and Zambia (4 700 mt). The 1997 combined aquaculture production of the region was 40 300 mt. Aquaculture is estimated to be 95 percent small scale, with fish ponds integrated into the mosaic of agricultural activities. Mean yield is approximated as 500 kg/ha/yr, although the range is wide, from less than a hundred to more than 10 000 kg/ha/yr. The Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership (IGOS-P) established, in 1999, a thematic approach to the implementation of the IGOS. The Almendares River constitutes the most important superficial stream in Cuban capital, that finishes in the Metropolitan Park of Havana, which is an entertaining centre. The objective of this work is to determine the presence of toxic inorganic pollutants in the Almendares River water. 10 samplings were carried out from June 2003 to May 2004 in 14 stations established along the last 10 km of the river and 3 tributaries. Strengthening tuna management is one of the primary tasks for the new Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). Stock assessment and the prediction of the dynamics of the tuna resources will become increasingly important research topics because they provide the basic information for the management decision process. Four samples of sandstone from deformed Aptian–Albian sediments and their less deformed Turonian cover at Sites 959 and 960 on the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge yielded sufficient apatite for fission track analysis. Reduced mean track length values of 12.42 ± 0.16 μm to 13.67 ± 0.11 μm indicate that measured central ages, which range from 88 ± 4 Ma to 113 ± 4 Ma, have undergone partial resetting and are therefore apparent ages. Stochastic modeling of the fission track age and length parameters indicate that the samples have a strong predepositional signal, slightly modified by minor levels of prolonged postdepositional annealing (maximum temperatures <80°C). The present paper involves their results in the pollutant contributions to the aquatic ecosystems according to the products processed in different productive facilities of the Cuba Island, and concerning to the most significant fishing resources as lobster, white shrimp, tuna, shark, snapper, mackerel, jack and bill fish. The polluting loads in 12 years (between 1955 and 1999) respond to the indicators BOD, QOD, TP, TNK and N-NH4.
