The present paper deals with the influence of different rates of spacing on the poling of sisal plants (Agave sisalana Perrine). The results were obtained from spacing trials (four randomized blocks of nine treatments) carried out at the Ribeirão Preto and Pindorama Experimental Stations. The percentages of poling plants, up to the 5th leaf cutting, were 20,0% and 91,7% for the narrowest (1,2 x 2,0 m) and widest (2,0 x 3,0 m) spacings tried in Pindorama, while in Ribeirão Preto they were 12,5% and 02,5%, respectivelly. According to these results it may be concluded that the narrow spaced plants were less liable to early poling than the wide spacing ones. The trial at Ribeirão Preto also indicated that among the plants, grown under the same conditions,... |

Graner,E. A.. |
The effect of carotenoid pigments on the egg yolk color was studied in this paper. Three types of maize of known genetical constitution were used: Cateto, with deep orange endosperm; Armour, with yellow-orange endosperm and Cristal, with white endosperm. The carotenoid pigments of the two colored maizes were analysed: the total and both the active parts in relation to vitamin A and the zeaxanthin part showed to be practically double in the deep orange corn. The color of the yolk was orange when the ration had the deep orange corn and yellow in the case of the yellow-orange corn. The increase in shade was proportional to the amount of pigment present in the grains. If green feeds is added to the ration with white corn, the yolk becomes yellow or orange,... |

Fate has knocked at your door. It has reminded you that, as to the years of your life, you are no longer a young man, that your age will be sixty five on the day this little volume will be presented to you. Time and fate are inexorable powers. Sometimes the question has occurred to me, whether we have any right to speak of a “Jubilee”, whether one’s retirement from office or the attainment of high age is something to be gratulated upon, since these events are usually not exactly welcome to the person involved. Yet, I think there cannot be any doubt as to this. For, can there be ever more reason for deep satisfaction and gratitude than when a man may without self-reproach, look back upon an honest and successful life? |

In the following account the author of the present paper has endeavoured to compile all available information regarding this interesting member of the Gramineae-Zoysieae. As the genus under consideration has in many cases been incorrectly described, it appeared highly desirable to amend the faults and inaccuracies committed by both the original author of the genus and various subsequent taxonomists. The results of these investigations are being put forward in the following pages. |

Bor, N.L.. |
Dactyloctenium Henrardianum Bor spec. nov. quae ab omnibus aliis speciebus hujus generis inflorescentia racemosa haud digitata satis recedit. An annual grass. Culms slender, 10—30 cm tall, erect, smooth, glabrous, striate in robust specimens, terete, long-exserted from the uppermost leaf-sheath. Leaf-sheaths strongly keeled, loose, slipping from the culm, much shorter than the internode and leaf-blade, markedly striate, smooth and glabrous except for some bristles from bulbous bases sparsely arranged near the margins in the upper fourth; ligule a lacerate membrane not more than 2 mm long. Leaf-blades up to 10 cm long by 5 mm wide at the base, gradually narrowed into a fine point from the rounded base, very scabrid on the margins which also bear long... |

The following description was made after a single female specimen from the "Museum d' Histoire Naturelle" in Geneva. The specimen differs in some respects from the widely distributed and rather common Onomarchus uninotatus (Serville, 1839, p. 468) which is recorded from the southern part of China, Annam, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Bangka, Amboina, Batu Islands and Australia, but on the other hand these differences are not of such a striking importance to separate it as a new species. I am inclined to consider the specimen as a local variety of O. uninotatus (Serv.) 1). Onomarchus uninotatus (Serv.) var. carli nov. var. Holotype: 1 ♀ from Mudomalai near Madura, South India, leg. Carl and Escher, 8-II-1927. In general shape and measurements the... |

The author reports in this paper the results obtained in one experiment with wet an dry mash on the growing of chickens. The experiment started with two groups of 50 Sussex bred each, one receiving dry and other wet mash. The observations were continued in another four groups of 25 chickens each, two of Rhod Island Red bred and two of Sussex bred, both receiving dry and wet mash. The chickens were weight every 10 days and the differences obtained proved to be not significant statistically. Both dry and wet mash were equally good but wet mash is much more dificult to give to the chickkens than the dry one. |

Production of navy beans on a commercial scale in Australia was begun as recently as 1940. Since that year, the industry has become well-established, particularly in New South Wales, where the navy, bean crop now forms an important feature of the agriculture of the New England district. |

Campbell, Keith O.. |
The extensive use of aircraft for transport of freight during the war period has focussed attention on the possibility of transporting a greatly increased volume of civilian goods by air in future. Perishable agricultural products appear to be one class of commodities which have potentialities as air freight. Such an advance in marketing technology, if it becomes a reality, is likely to have a marked effect on the production and distribution of perishables. Several research agencies, conscious of possibilities in this field of transportation, have been conducting investigations during the past few years. Air transportation of primary products is, however, no longer in the blue-print stage. Large scale shipments of fruit and vegetables by air have already... |
