| In order to know potassium availability in "leucita de Poços de Caldas" from Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, a Mitscherlich pot experiment was set up. The pots were filled with 6 kilograms of sieved (4 mm) "Terra Roxa Misturada" soil. Rice (Oryza sativa, L.), Dourado Agulha variety was the testing plant. Doses of potassium referred to are 1,5 g (as K(2)0) from both KCl and "leucita de Poços de Caldas". There were 6 treatments, with 3 repetitions, as follows: 1) Control; 2) NP + 1 dose K (KCl); 3) NP + 2 doses K (KCl)); 4) NP + 3 doses K (KCl); 5) NP + 1 dose K (leucita); 6) NP + 2 doses K (leucita) and 7) NP + 3 doses K (leucita). | Em trabalhos recentemente publicados. Pereira (9, 10) conclui que os frutos de café possuem enzimas capazes de eliminar a substância péctica que envolve as sementes, quando após o despolpomento são eles colocados em água de cal contendo 0,4% de cloreto de sódio. No presente trabalho mostra-se que aquela substância péctica não é eliminada pelo tratamento descrito, mas apenas torna-se endurecida pela ação do cálcio. Quando sementes tratadas da maneira indicada foram lavadas e colocadas em água pura ou levemente acidulada, a substância péctica se reintumesceu e as sementes tornaram-se novamente lisas ao tato e envolvidas pela camada translúcida de substância péctica. | In the earlier days the cataloguing and labeling of type specimens was rather careless, mostly with no mention that they were types. What we now term ’holotypes’ were previously referred to merely as ’types’, and both ’syntypes’ and ’paratypes’ were called ’cotypes’. Several of the original types were obscured in the files by writing them off as synonyms of other (earlier) species names, changing not only the generic, but even the specific names. Exchange of type material was extremely informal and often no record was made of the transfers. I have started to compile a catalogue of the type material in the museum in 1952, shortly after I was put in charge of the fish collections. | In his paper on the mammals of the islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire (situated off the north coast of Venezuela), WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK (1940 a, p. 69) mentioned a juvenile specimen of a cricetine rodent which was identified by Mr. M. A. C. HINTON and Mr. R. W. HAYMAN as probably belonging to the genus Hesperomys. In his zoogeographical remarks on the mammalian fauna of the islands, WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK (1940 b, p. 111) noted: “It is doubtful what significance may be attached to the occurrence of the small Cricetine Hesperomys? (launcha aff.) on Aruba, since this genus is southern in range, none being found in northern South America”. | The New South Wa1es Milk Board was brought into being in 1929, as a result of producer action, to bring order into a highly disorganised market situation. The retailing of milk had been extremely competitive, milk supply and hence milk price had been erratic and hygiene had been a matter of caveat emptor. (1) The Board was without effective powers until the Milk Act, 1931, after which prices were stabilised, inspection of dairies was introduced and in general reasonable standards of hygiene were established. Initially whole milk quotas were allocated to factories. | The species of the Atlantic Rhizophora have formerly been considered as belonging to one species, R. mangle L. In 1818 G. F. W. Meyer (11) described a second species, R. racemosa, from British Guiana. On working up the Rhizophoras of British Guiana Leechman (10) added a third species, R. harrisonii in 1908, and distinguished all these three species. Through the works of Salvoza (13), Savory (14), Keay (9), Stearn (15), and Jonker (8), it has become clear that these three species occur on the West African and East American shores as well as in some Caribbean islands. In the Old World, from the coast of East Africa to Malaysia, there are also three (other) distinct species as distinguished by many authors and by myself (7). |

| During recent research on a small number of freshwater sharks from Lake Jamoer, Netherlands New Guinea, I was struck by the fact that the consulted literature clearly showed a deplorable lack of agreement in the choice of a generic name for the species belonging to the genus Carcharhinus Blainville, sensu Bigelow & Schroeder (1948, p. 320), even among recent authors. Though by far the majority of contemporary authors now seem to have accepted Carcharhinus, a decreasing number still uses either Galeolamna Owen or Eulamia Gill, or occasionally even Carcharias Cuvier. | No período de 1946 a 1950 foram conduzidas duas experiências era Tupi Paulista e três em Mococa, para estudar o efeito, sôbre a produção da batatinha (Solarium tuberosum L.), da adição de farelo de cacau a adubações minerais contendo 40-120-60 e 80-120-60 kg/ha de N-P(2)0(5)-K(2)0. O farelo em apreço, que é um dos subprodutos da indústria do chocolate e consta principalmente de películas das amêndoas (sementes) de cacau, foi adicionado em doses que variaram entre 255 e 1100 kg/ha. A adição de farelo deprimiu um pouco a produção em Tupi, sendo que a depressão foi maior no tratamento que recebeu a menor dose de nitrogênio; em Mococa seu efeito foi positivo e apreciável na presença de 80-120-60, mas praticamente nulo quando adicionado a 40-120-60. | De 1948 a 1950 foram conduzidas, em duas localidades do Estado de São Paulo, quatro experiências comparando o efeito, na batatinha (Solarium tuberosum L.), de adubações com NPK em que o fósforo figurou nas formas de bauxita fosforosa (da llha Trauíra, Estado do Maranhão), farinha de ossos degelatinados ou superfosfato. A dose de fósforo, 120 kg/ha de P2O5, foi empregada exclusivamente nas formas mencionadas ou na de misturas contendo metade do nutriente como superfosfato e metade como farinha de ossos ou bauxita. | Neste artigo são apresentados os resultados de 10 experiências de adubação da batatinha (Solanum tuberosum L.), com doses crescentes de fósforo (30, 60, 90, 120, 180 e 240 kg/ha de P2O5) na presença de nitrogênio e potássio. Essas experiências foram conduzidas entre os anos de 1943 e 1947, sendo duas em vasos, na Estação Experimental Central, Campinas, e oito no campo, em diferentes áreas de quatro localidades do Estado de São Paulo. O efeito do fósforo foi geralmente muito bom, alcançando +42% em média de todas as doses e das oito experiências de campo.
