Catani,R. A.; Perez,J. T..

A late-glacial and holocene pollen diagram from Cienaga del Visitador (Dept. Boyaca, Colombia) Naturalis
Hammen, T. van der; Gonzalez, E..
In a C 14 dated pollen diagram from ”Cienaga del Visitador” (ca 6°8’N; 72°47’ W) in the Colombian Eastern Cordillera the zones Ib + Ic + II (including the Allerød and Bølling interstadials) form one fluctuation in the diagram, as the short cold zone Ic is not reflected. An earlier Late-glacial interstadial is recognized and is called Susacá-interstadial. It probably lasted from about 13900 to 13100 B.P., was colder than the Bølling-interstadial, and is probably reflected in pollen diagrams from other parts of the world. The Holocene part of the diagram shows very high Gramineae-percentages, apparently due to a considerable lowering of the ”tree-line”. This must have been caused by the fact that the Holocene local climate has been much drier than the...

A new fresh-water prawn of the genus Macrobrachium (Crustacea Decapoda, Caridea) from Madagascar Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Due to the kindness of Mr. Y. Therezien, Ingénieur-hydrobiologiste of the Centre Technique Forestier Tropical at Tananarive, Madagascar, the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie received at several occasions freshwater Crustacea from Madagascar. Two previous reports (Holthuis, 1964, 1965) dealt with the crayfishes and the atyid shrimps of these collections. Among the fresh-water Palaemonid prawns a new species of Macrobrachium was found, which is the subject of the present note. It is a great pleasure to dedicate this beautiful species to Mr. Therezien. Macrobrachium therezieni new species River of Maningory, Fénérive district, Tamatave province, eastern Madagascar; 16 February 1961; Y. Therezien, no. 9. — 1 adult male (holotype); Rijksmuseum van...

A new species of the genus Linuparus White, from the South China Sea (Crustacea Decapoda) Naturalis
Bruce, A.J..
The palinurid genus Linuparus White, 1847, has been represented by a single recent species, Linuparus trigonus (Von Siebold). The trawl survey of the northern shelf region of the South China Sea at present being carried out by the R.V. "Cape St. Mary" of the Fisheries Research Station, Hong Kong, has produced numerous examples of this species. Amongst old collections of Crustacea at the Fisheries Research Station, a single example of a specimen of Linuparus was found early in 1963, which showed numerous differences from the specimens obtained on the trawl survey. This specimen lacked data and was badly damaged, making a full comparison with Linuparus trigonus impossible. In January 1964, a second specimen was obtained which confirmed the constancy of the...

A pollen diagram from “Laguna de la Herrera” (Sabana de Bogota) Naturalis
Hammen, T. van der; Gonzalez, E..
The Laguna de La Herrera (alt. ca 2550 m) is a lake situated on the western border of the Sabana de Bogotá, near Mosquera (dept. of Cundinamarca, Colombia) (fig. 2). This part of the Sabana has a relatively dry climate (appr. 600—700 mm rainfall), as it lies in the rain-shadow of the hills that border the Sabana on its western edge, and it bears therefore a xerophytic vegetation. The western slopes of the bordering mountains, that fall steeply to warmer valleys, have a much higher rainfall and are almost continuously clouded. They bear therefore a cloud-forest, of the Quercetum type, that reaches partly the very top of these mountains. Fig. 1 shows this in an idealized section. For further details on the mentioned vegetation-types, we may refer to van der...

A revision of the Indo-West Pacific spiny Lobsters of the Panulirus Japonicus group Naturalis
George, R.W.; Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION As a result of separate investigations on Panulirus japonicus (sens, lat.), the present authors independently came to the conclusion that more than one species was included under that name. The first author (George), when in 1958 studying specimens of the Western Australian spiny lobster which at that time was indicated by the name Panulirus longipes (A. Milne Edwards) (a species considered by many authors to be synonymous with P. japonicus), was dissatisfied with that identification and obtained material of the typical P. longipes from Zanzibar. Comparison with this material showed that the Western Australian spiny lobster represented an unnamed species, which he then described as P. cygnus. He also arrived at the conclusion that P. japonicus...

A revison of the genus Meineckia (Euphorbiaceae) Naturalis
Webster, Grady L..
A revision of the Euphorbiaceous genus Meineckia has resulted in the recognition of 19 species, with 7 subspecies and 2 varieties (for a total of 25 distinct taxa). Proposed as new are 5 species and 1 subspecies, while new combinations are necessary for 14 species and 6 subspecific taxa. The extraordinary confusion in the taxonomic history of the genus is illustrated by the fact that the 14 previously recognized species have been classified under 6 different generic names: Cluytiandra, Flueggea, Neopeltandra, Peltandra, Phyllanthus, and Securinega. As revised, the number of species represented in the different regions is as follows: America, 3; Africa and Arabia, 4; Madagascar, 8; India and Ceylon, 4. The genus appears to be of African origin and is...

A STUDY ON THE INFLUENCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS TO THE PURE LINE SELECTION FROM HYBRID POPULATION OF RICE-Part 1. The Response of Yielding Capacity Among Different Pure Line Groups Selected at Different Localities Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
T.S. Miu; 繆進三.
[[abstract]]In this study, the following two hybrid combinations were used: (A) Chia-nung 242 × Baritol (B) Taichung 65 × Baritol in which, parent varieties “Chia-nung 242” and “Taichung 65” are the most popular rice varieties in Taiwan. “Baritol” is an upland rice variety cultivated in the aboriginal region of Taiwan. By the use of two crossing combinations mentioned above, it is expected that through the successional generation of selections in the breeding program, new rice varieties with disease and drought resistant characters might be developed. How environmental factors influence the chance of pure-line selection from the hybrid populations having the same parental combinations was also involved in the study. F2 individuals in each of the...

Aanwinsten voor de Nederlandse adventief-flora, 8 Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van; Reichgelt, Th.J..
This paper discusses acquisitions to the adventitious flora of the Netherlands, mainly found in the year 1964. 1. Erucastrum nasturtiifolium (Poir.) O. E. Schulz was most likely introduced with blocks of granite for the “Delta-works”, near Hellevoetsluis, prov. of South Holland. It is indigenous in parts of Southern and Central Europe. Differences between this species and the native E. gallicum (Willd.) O. E. Schulz are given. 2. Euphorbia dentata Michx., a native of the Central United States and Mexico, was found along a highway near Bodegraven, prov. of South Holland. As far as known to us this is the first record of introduction of the species into Europe. 3. Trientalis borealis Raf., a North American species, was found in a wood near Apeldoorn, prov....
