Mirzabe, Amir Hossein; Taheri, Mojtaba; Asaei, Habil; Kianmehr, Mohammad Hossein.
To design the planting, separating, threshing, sizing and packing machines for agricultural products, physical and mechanical properties of the products should be known. In this paper, some physical properties of red radish seeds were studied. Dimensional parameters, when moisture content equals to 5.65% based on dry bases (d.b), were measured using image processing technique. Effects of moisture content on gravimetrical and frictional properties of the seeds, including mass of single seed, 1000-unit seed, bulk density, true density, porosity, static coefficient of friction on various surfaces, and angle of repose based on pouring, Hele-Shaw, empting and filling methods were studied....

Mean nut length, width and thickness were, respectively, 25.64, 21.99 and 18.03 mm, while the derived geometric mean and equivalent diameters were 21.62 and 21.72 mm, respectively. Mean surface and projected areas were 1 475.74 and 445.02 mm2, respectively, while mean nut volume was 5 371.90 mm3. Mean apparent density of the nuts was 811.30 kg/m3 while bulk density and bulk porosity were determined as 476.43 kg/m3 and 41.28%, respectively. Morula nuts are generally spherical, with mean sphericity of 84.40%, and aspect and flakiness ratios of 0.86,...

The effect of moisture content on some physical properties of Bush Mango (Irvingia gabonensis) nut was studied at four moisture levels in the range of 7.52% - 20.6% (d.b). Results showed that the length, width and thickness of nut increased from 37.84 to 50.16 mm, 30.23 to 42.62 mm and 19.25 to 28.15 mm respectively, as moisture content increased in the above range. Nut sphericity decreased from 76.2% to 69.5% as moisture content increased. One thousand seed weight, bulk density, true density and angle of repose increased from 6.634 to 9.158 kg, 756.7 to 1095 kgm-3, 984.4 to 1095kgm-3 and 25.3 to 38.9o respectively, in the above moisture range. Static coefficient of friction on different surfaces increased in the order of fiber glass (0.378 to 0.394),...

Influence of different moisture content on engineering properties of tamarind seeds CIGR Journal
MOHITE, ASHISH M; Sharma, Neha; Mishra, Anuradha.
Engineering properties of tamarind seeds were evaluated on the basis of different moisture content along with whole and split seeds. Tamarind seeds at a moisture content (8.24% d.b.) were regulated at 5, 10 and 15 % db moisture content. Geometric mean diameter and sphericity values were in the range (8.79 to 9.87) and (0.62 to 0.70) for 5, 10 and 15% moisture content of tamarind seeds. The result of bulk and true density varied as 708 to 688 kg/m3 and 963 to768 kg/m3 ,respectively in the varying range of moisture content. Textural properties such as toughness and hardness showed an increasing trend with an increase in moisture content. The coefficient of static friction was found highest on a plywood surface, then for cast iron sheet and stainless steel....

Determining some physical properties of Azivash (Corchorus Olitorious L.) seed CIGR Journal
Azadbakht, Mohsen; Pourbagher, Roghayeh.
Used Azivash seed in the research has been provided in summer 2013. The samples were cleaned and separated manually and residuals and broken seeds were taken apart it and healthy seed was provided for testing. Then diameter, area of image, and round coefficient, were calculated using image processing application. Mass of 1000 seeds, mass density, real density and porosity percentage, static friction coefficient, repose angle in two modes of fullness and emptiness were measured. Liquid replacement method has been used to calculate density and volume of the seeds. The results showed that a positive relationship between physical properties of Azivash seed including geometric properties (diameter, volume), gravity properties (weight of 1000 seeds, real density...

Glass Microbeads in Analog Models of Thrust Wedges Anais da ABC (AABC)
D'ANGELO,TAYNARA; GOMES,CAROLINE J.S..
ABSTRACT Glass microbeads are frequently used in analog physical modeling to simulate weak detachment zones but have been neglected in models of thrust wedges. Microbeads differ from quartz sand in grain shape and in low angle of internal friction. In this study, we compared the structural characteristics of microbeads and sand wedges. To obtain a better picture of their mechanical behavior, we determined the physical and frictional properties of microbeads using polarizing and scanning electron microscopy and ring-shear tests, respectively. We built shortening experiments with different basal frictions and measured the thickness, slope and length of the wedges and also the fault spacings....

Parboiling Duration Effects on Physical Properties of African Breadfruit Seed CIGR Journal
Obi, Okey Francis; Okechukwu, Michael Emeka.
Abstract Parboiling is a pre-dehulling operation and, the effect on the physical properties of African breadfruit seed (var. africana) was investigated. Freshly extracted seeds were parboiled for 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes, and their physical properties determined. It was observed that parboiling time had a significant effect (p<0.05) on all the physical properties of African breadfruit seeds investigated. The moisture content of the seed ranged from 32.92±0.23 to 50.78±0.19 % (w.b.) as the parboiling time increased. Generally, it was observed that the mean values observed for the physical dimensions (axial dimensions, mean diameters, sphericity, aspect ratio and surface area) increased from 0 to 10 min. parboiling time after which the...
