Rheological behavior of Chlorella sp. e Scenedesmus sp. cultures in different biomass concentrations REA
Santos,Michel de O. dos; Martins,Márcio A; Coimbra,Jane S. dos R.; Gates,Richard S.; Corrêdo,Lucas de P..
Studies involving the use of microalgae are increasingly intensifying for the potential they present to produce biofuels, because they are a renewable energy source that does not compete directly with food production, and because they enable the obtaining of a fuel with less environmental impact when compared to fossil fuel. In this context, the use of microalgae is directly associated to its capacity to be produced on a large scale and to be extracted from the culture medium. Rheological studies are important for obtaining the information needed in the elaboration of projects and equipment that will be used in various operations existing in systems of production and extraction of algal biomass. In the evaluation of...

Reclutamiento del camarón rosado Farfantepenaeus notialis (Decapoda: Penaeidae) en el golfo de Ana María, Cuba. OceanDocs
Giménez Hurtado, E.; Alzugaray Martínez, R.; Garcés Rodríguez, Y.; Delgado Miranda, G.; Ventura Flores, A..
The biomass of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus notialis present in Ana María gulf during the period 1997-2010, was determined by means of statistical analysis of capture for ages (SCA). The biomass was increased from the year 2008 due to the increase of the recruitment, which shows its biggest average annual values in July, November and March. The recruitspre-adults arrival to the fishing area occurs by two main zones, in front of Ana María keys, and in Sta. Cruz Abajo, at North of the South portion of the Doce Leguas keys. A fishery at the end of the year may provoke an over fishing of the growth and to affect the available biomass for the...

Effect of prescribed fre on forage production and nutritive value of the perennial grass Saccharum griffithii Phyton
Gul,B; Islam,M; Ahmad,S; Gul,S.
The effect of fre on growth and nutritive value of Saccharum griffithii Munro ex Boiss-ravennae (Linn.) Murr. hybrid, a low palatable perennial grass in the semi-arid region of the highlands of Balochistan, Pakistan, was evaluated during 2008 and 2009. Prescribed fire treatments were applied in February 2008 and 2009 at the dormant stage of vegetation. Different growth parameters (tiller height, tiller number/plant), forage production (fresh, dry) and nutritive value (crude protein, ash) were compared with control (unburnt) plots. Fire increased the number of tillers, and the fresh and dry forage production in both years. Fire also improved the crude protein contents. Prescribed fire at the dormant stage of vegetation can be used as a vegetation tool to...

Producer Willingness to Supply Biomass: the Effects of Price and Producer Characteristics AgEcon
Altman, Ira J.; Bergtold, Jason S.; Sanders, Dwight R.; Johnson, Thomas G..
This paper presents research results based on data from two biomass producer surveys collected from mid Missouri and southern Illinois. Specific topics of interest include the effect of price and producer characteristics on willingness to supply, assets producers currently own and services they may be willing to provide if bioenergy industries develop. A series of censored tobit regressions are utilized to analyze willingness to supply results under three price scenarios. Marginal effects of a one dollar change in the biomass price are shown to increase the willingness to supply by 0.5 to 2 percent.

Nitrogen fractions in the microbial biomass in soils of southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Camargo,F. A.O.; Gianello,C.; Vidor,C..
The reaction of nitrogen compounds with ninhydrin can be used as an indicator of cytoplasmic materials released from microbial cells killed by fumigation. Total-N, ninhydrin-reactive-N (NR-N), ammonium-N (A-N), and α-amino-N in the microbial biomass of soils from the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were determined, in 1996, in 0.5 mol L-1 K2SO4 extracts of fumigated and non-fumigated soils. Total-N varied from 20.3 to 104.4 mg kg-1 and the ninhydrin-reactive-N corresponded, in average, to 27% of this. The ninhydrin-reactive-N was made up of 67% ammonium-N and 33% aminoacids with the amino group at the α-carbon position. It was concluded that colorimetric analysis of NR-N and A-N may be used as a direct measure of...

Carbon stocks in a tropical dry forest in Brazil Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Pereira Júnior,Lécio Resende; Andrade,Eunice Maia de; Palácio,Helba Araújo de Queiroz; Raymer,Poliana Costa Lemos; Ribeiro Filho,Jacques Carvalho; Pereira,Francisco Jairo Soares.
ABSTRACT The dry forests are the type most widely distributed vegetation in the tropics, and studies aimed at quantifying the carbon stock in these forests are important for it to be quantified their participation as mitigating the effects of climate change. With that in mind, the aim of this research was to quantify the carbon stocks in the woody, herbaceous, litter and root components of a patch of dry tropical forest, with 30 years of regeneration in Iguatu-CE, Brazil. Initially the vegetation was inventoried by means of a floristic and phytosociological survey of the woody component in a 1 ha area which had been under conservation. The biomass was then estimated employing allometric equations, and the stored carbon was...

Energy potential of sugar cane biomass in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Rípoli,Tomaz Caetano Cannavam; Molina Jr.,Walter Francisco; Rípoli,Marco Lorenzzo Cunali.
Brazil is a developing tropical country with abundant biomass resources. Sugar cane (Saccahrum spp.) is primarily produced to obtain sugar and alcohol. Presently sugar cane is burned before harvest. If the cane were not burned before harvest, the trash (tops and leaves) could be collected and burned to produce steam to generate electricity, or be converted into alcohol fuel and decrease the severe air pollution problems caused by sugar cane burning. Based upon logical assumptions and appropriate data, we estimate the number of people that could be served each year by this biomass if its energy was converted into electricity. From trash and bagasse, 7.0x10(6) and 5.5x10(6) people y-1 could...

Plug Flow Analysis for the Design of the Compaction Region of a Tapered Screw Extruder Biomass Briquetting Machine CIGR Journal
Orisaleye, Ifeoluwa; Ojolo, Sunday.
The study of compaction or solids conveying in a screw extruder has been carried out majorly on the straight screws using the plug flow analysis. Despite this, the analysis of the straight screw appears to be complex as contained in existing literatures based on the force and torque balance. The tapered screw, which is considered to be an effective option for biomass compaction, introduces greater complications because the geometry is constantly changing. In this study, a method based on the traction and retardation mechanism of friction is developed for a fully unwound screw channel utilizing only the force balances. The procedure has been used to carry out a parametric analysis of the tapered screw extruder for a screw...

UDOMSUP, JANYA.
This work presents a study for biomass possible to bring renewable energy in a swirling fluidized bed combustor (SFBC). The main objective of this experimental work was to study the biomass component and excess air of biomass. Palmyra palm shell, Leucaena (lam.), and Water hyacinth are using as fuel in the tests. Quartz sand of 600-850 µm and static bed height of 20 cm was used as inert bed material. For all of tests, the feed rate was fixed 45 kg/hr. for variable excess air (of 40 60 and 80%). As the experimental results, the temperature profiles in SFBC were obviously seen deviate when tests with higher excess air. In the test run, the highest cellulose...
