Quality labels: economic results for the producer Inra
Desbois, D.; Nefussi, J..

A Nonparametric Efficiency Analysis of Bean Producers from North and South Kivu AgEcon
Ross, Kara L.; Dalton, Timothy J.; Featherstone, Allen M..
The purpose of this research is to determine how technically efficient small-scale producers are in two provinces (North and South Kivu) in the Democratic of Republic (DR) of Congo at producing two different varieties of beans: bush and climbing beans. In addition to calculating the efficiency scores, this research attempts to identify what producer and field characteristics affect these scores. We hypothesize that bean producers will be more productive than producers in South Kivu and that climbing bean producers will be more productive than bush bean producers. Technical efficiency is estimated using a nonparametric approach. A tobit model is used to examine the effect of producer and field characteristic on the efficiency score. On average, farms...

The mobile epifauna of the soft bottoms in the subtidal Oosterschelde estuary: structure, function and impact of the storm-surge barrier OMA
Hostens, K.; HamerlyncK, O..
Data on the mobile epifauna of the Oosterschelde estuary, collected by beam trawl, were compiled from several studies. Multivariate statistical techniques brought out the fact that the Oosterschelde, when compared with neighbouring areas, has a characteristic epibenthic fauna. Diversity as measured by Hill's diversity numbers N through N +infinite, is higher for the Oosterschelde (N1=4.5) than for the Voordelta (N1=3.5) and the Westerschelde (N1=2.2).Four epifaunal communities can be distinguished within the Oosterschelde, the two most seaward communities being the richest. Annual production is estimated at about 6 gADW...

Regional identity : an overview Inra
Van de Kop, P.; Sautier, D..
This chapter provides an overview of the use of regional identity as a value-adding strategy in agricultural diversification. We refer to the products involved as 'regional products' or 'origin products'. They may (or may not) be identified by an official label or specific brand. Official recognition is not the determining factor: many regional products have survived for a long time through the undocumented practices of producers, merchants and consumers (Bérard and Marchenay, 2004). What is essential is that these products have their own identity and have specific characteristics, reputation and quality that make them distinct from other products.

Oil slick’s trajectory and fate forecast on the sea at Cuba's northwest zone by means of Petromar software OceanDocs
Calzada Estrada, A.E.; Fernández, K.; Guilarte, Y.; Rodríguez, R.; Bezanilla, A.; Casals, R.; Amboaje, Y.; Ramos, A..
The work presented here is the result of applying PetroMar software, elaborated at the Marine Meteorology Centre belonging to the Institute of Meteorology of Cuba in order to perform retroanalysis and prediction of oil slick tracks at sea. Programming was executed in MatLab (version 7.0) tightly coupled to geographical feature of study region through a convenient GIS and subroutines set named BatTri, used to design the mathematical 1 dominion. This application was implemented for deep waters surrounding six prefixed coastal zones in Cuban archipelago, but it may be applied to any region in the world. Computing is made on a finite elements grid using a fourth order Runge - Kunta scheme, which offer operational advantages and an efficient integration. The...

Phytoplankton biomass and production in the coastal water off Goa, West Coast , India. OceanDocs
Saad, Osama S..
The coastal water off Goa is a characteristically interesting marine environment due to influence of the monsoon and upwelling. Studies on the primary productivity and related areas revealed the following results. - Water column is stratified during October and remained well mixed during November. - Hypoxic condition prevailed at the bottom during October but not in November. - Nutrients (especially Nitrate) was low during October (surface) but increased during November. High nutrients remain in bottom largely due to intense stratification during October. - Phytoplankton biomass (Chl a) average was high during October of 2.34 mgm^3 and in November it was as low as 0.62 mgm-3. - Chl a at 30m depth was as high as 1.03 mg m-3 and that of November it was 0.43...

Decentralizing and liberalizing EU regulations on seeds and plant genetic resources. A Danish case study Organic Eprints
Turpin, Grégoire; Boelt, Birte.
In a context of severe plant genetic diversity erosion, the regulatory framework of the European Union on seeds and plant genetic resources is perceived as a limiting factor to practices aiming to conserve cultivated biodiversity. To create more supportive frameworks, some EU member states liberalized seed trade and landraces cultivation regulations at national or regional level. For this paper, a case study of the 2015 cereal and vegetable seed legislation reform in Denmark has been carried out. Interviews with stakeholders of the seed system, with farmers and project leaders impacted by this change and with key informant on the regulation, from NGOs and public authorities, have been carried out. Inductive and deductive analysis methods enabled the themes...

En rigtig Ø-afgrøde? Organic Eprints
Korsgaard, Maren.

Organic clover seed production: Does intercropping with plant species with at strong scent distract the clover seed weevil and increase seed yield? Organic Eprints
Hansen, Lars Monrad; Boelt, Birte.
A field experiment was conducted in 1999-2001 in order to test if intercropping with other plant species with at strong scent would be able to distract clover seed weevils away from the clover seed field. Intercropping with chives, caraway, oregano or thyme did not have any effect on the number of clover seed weevils registered and white clover seed yield was not affected by any of the treatments. It is concluded, that a well-established white clover seed crop is very competitive against other plant species.

Koens fysiologiske status og indflydelse heraf på produktion og sundhed omkring kælvning afhængig af foderniveau og næringsstofforsyning Organic Eprints
Ingvartsen, Klaus Lønne; Mogensen, Lisbeth; Larsen, Torben.

Strategies to improve quality and safety and reduce cost of production in organic and low-input crop production systems. QLIF subproject 3: Crop production methods Organic Eprints
Tamm, L..
Organic crop production seeks to produce high quality foods while reducing the inputs in order to promote environmental quality and conserve resources. This necessitates optimal production systems in terms of soil fertility and plant health. Studies in QLIF subproject 3 have shown that soils may gain an improved potential to release N from added amendments through adaptation of management practices. Likewise, long-term management strategies may influence suppressiveness of soils to economically important diseases. Application of manures and other organic soil fertility inputs do not pose any additional safety risk in ready-to-eat vegetables, such as head lettuce, if good farming practice...

Organic poultry farming Organic Eprints
Hermansen, John E.; Horsted, Klaus.
The development in organic livestock production can be attributed to an increased consumer inter-est in organic products while, at the same time, farmers are interested in converting to organic pro-duction methods – often stimulated by governmental support or subsidies. It is important that the organic production systems can fulfil the expectations of each of these stakeholders if the organic livestock production is to increase further. This is in particular important if the organic poultry pro-duction should move from the present niche-production to a...

Management of grasslands in intensive dairy livestock farming Organic Eprints
Kristenseen, Troels; Søegaard, Karen; Kristensen, Ib Sillebak.
By the intensifying of the livestock production with specialised and larger farm units the role of grassland has been reduced. The change in EU policy from a production-oriented marked to a marked where the choice of crop is linked to its added value; grassland has an opportunity to come back. However, the aim for research and farming practice within grassland management should be seen in this new context. The paper reviews different production and management systems, mainly stressed on grazing systems, within intensive dairy farming and aspects of feeding and quality of herbage in order to propose areas of special interest seen in the new context. Farming...
