Although traditional rice germplasm in northeastern Thailand is only a small portion comparing to modern popular varieties, they are still grown throughout the region. Those traditional varieties grown in the lower part of the region are mostly non-glutinous varieties, while those grown in the upper part are glutinous ones. The existence of these traditional varieties in the region is not only because of growing for sale, but also due to some special reason, such as, believes in their medicinal and nutritional properties, culture and ancestor’s believes. The main objective of this study is to preserve traditional rice varieties for farmers, with the strategic goal of protecting rice germplasm from losses. The experiments were conducted at Sakon Nakhon Rice Research Center and Surin Rice Research Center during wet season 2010 - 2012. The activities consisted of survey, collection, pure line selection, yield trial evaluation, re-distribution of seeds back to communities, utilizing local knowledge for value-added product development. The results showed that more than 500 germplasms were collected, both glutinous and non-glutinous. Some promising germplasms with special properties were further selected for pure lines and evaluated for blast resistance. Some of these selected lines were utilized for product development by local communities. Seeds of some pure lines have been multiplied in order to re-distribute back to local communities for future use.
เชื้อพันธุกรรมข้าวพื้นเมืองในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ แม้จะมีสัดส่วนเพียงเล็กน้อย เมื่อเทียบกับพันธุ์ที่เกษตรกรนิยมปลูกในปัจจุบัน แต่ก็มีการปลูกกระจายทั้งภูมิภาค ในภาคอีสานตอนล่างส่วนใหญ่เป็นพันธุ์ข้าวเจ้า ในขณะที่อีสานตอนบนจะเป็นพันธุ์ข้าวเหนียว การที่เชื้อพันธุกรรมข้าวคงอยู่ได้ในพื้นที่ โดยนอกจากปลูกเป็นสินค้าโดยตรงแล้ว ยังมีเหตุผลพิเศษเฉพาะ เช่น ความเชื่อในสรรพคุณทางเภสัชและกระแสรักษ์สุขภาพ วัฒนธรรมและความเชื่อของบรรพบุรุษ เป็นต้น การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่ออนุรักษ์พันธุกรรมข้าวไว้ในท้องถิ่นและไร่นาของเกษตรกร เป้าหมายทางยุทธศาสตร์ คือ ป้องกันหรือลดการสูญหายทางพันธุกรรม โครงการวิจัยนี้ดำเนินการที่ ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวสกลนครและสุรินทร์ ในฤดูนาปี 2553 - 2555 โดยการสำรวจ รวบรวมเชื้อพันธุกรรมข้าว คัดเลือกสายพันธุ์บริสุทธิ์ การเปรียบเทียบผลผลิต การกระจายพันธุ์ข้าวสู่ชุมชน หาวิธีเพื่อเพิ่มมูลค่าและใช้ประโยชน์จากภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นในเชิงพาณิชย์ ผลการดำเนินงาน รวบรวมเชื้อพันธุกรรมข้าวพื้นเมืองในพื้นที่ได้มากกว่า 500 ตัวอย่าง นำสายพันธุ์ทั้งข้าวเจ้าและข้าวเหนียว ที่เป็นกลุ่มเชื้อพันธุกรรมที่มีคุณลักษณะพิเศษที่ดีเด่น เป็นที่ที่นิยมของเกษตรกรในพื้นที่ในอดีต ไปคัดเลือกพันธุ์บริสุทธิ์ ทดสอบความต้านทานต่อโรคไหม้ และบางสายพันธุ์ได้นำไปใช้ประโยชน์ในการแปรรูปเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์จากข้าวพื้นเมืองของชุมชน นอกจากนั้นบางพันธุ์ได้เตรียมความพร้อมด้านเมล็ดพันธุ์ไว้แล้ว เพื่อนำพันธุกรรมข้าวพื้นเมืองเหล่านั้น คืนสู่ชุมชนเพื่อให้เกษตรกรซึ่งเป็นเจ้าของดั้งเดิมได้ใช้ประโยชน์ต่อไป
