Resumo:  The article deals with studies in the physicochemical properties as well as in group composition of organic substance and bitumoids. In the Black sea shelf littoral zone bottom sediments. Sands and shell deposits, as compared with mud are shown to contain metamorphosed organic substance. Bottom sediments influenced by the anthropogenic factor are stated to concentrate bituminized organic substance whereas bitumoids are traced to increase in their composition hydrocarbon component content and to decrease that of asphalt and resin. The amount of chloroform-extracted compounds in the sediments is tens and hundreds times as much. The number and distribution of hydrocarbon-oxidating bacteria are closely correlated with the amount of chloroform-extracted substances. The degree of metamorphism of organic substance in the bottom sediments is marked to increase with bacterial density growth.
