The green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis Flotow (Chlamydomonadales) is very rich (2 – 5% dry weight) in the ketocarotenoid astaxanthine. Optimum culture parameters and carotenoid (Car) yield considerably depend upon biological parameters of the strains from different climatic zones. The study specified physiological and biochemical features of H. pluvialis (strain ISSS-16-LABIK 927-1 (Mainx) = CALU 97) grown in two-stage batch culture as related with illumination at the stage of vegetative growth. Light increasing from 2000 to 6000 Lx increased specific growth and production rates 1.7 and 3 times, respectively, molar ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus (N/P) uptake from 11 to 17, and the total Car yield per litre of culture 2.2 times. Under 4000-6000 Lx, the content of Car in aplanospores amounted to 160 – 205 pg.cell-1.d-1 (2.6 – 2.8% dry weight), total Car yield to 36 – 44 mg.l-1.d-1 and Car accumulation rate – 10 - 14 pg.cell-1.d-1.
