Monte Hermoso (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a tourist town inhabited by a large number of artisanal fishermen. The aim of this study was to characterize, through a descriptive analysis, the operational activity of the artisanal fleet and quantify the catches landed per species. The ships, of a trucker type, are 6-9 m length equipped with a 40-90 HP outboard motor. The data analyzed derive from purchase slips furnished by a gatherer corresponding to the November 2009-October 2010 period. The target species were stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) and patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti). The former was caught with hand line throughout the year, essentially between September-December. The latter was fished during March-April and September-December mainly with gill nets and, in a lesser proportion, longlines. During the study period total landings of stripped weakfish (704 t), patagonian smoothhound (607.6 t), parona letherjack (Parona signata, 95.8 t), whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri, 40.9 t) and the group of rays (33.6 t) were estimated. Total landings (of about 1,500 t) and those determinated per species are an estimate of the 12 month catch in that small scale fishery that represented, approximately, 6% of total landings of the ensemble of species known as "Variado Costero" corresponding to "El Rincón" area.
Monte Hermoso (Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina) es una ciudad turística en la que habitan un gran número de pescadores artesanales. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar, mediante un análisis descriptivo, la actividad operativa de la flota artesanal y cuantificar las capturas desembarcadas por especie. Las embarcaciones, del tipo trucker, tienen una eslora de entre 6 y 9 m y motor fuera de borda de una potencia de 40-90 HP. Los datos analizados provienen de comprobantes de compra correspondientes al período noviembre de 2009-octubre de 2010 proporcionados por un acopiador. Las especies blanco fueron la pescadilla (Cynoscion guatucupa) y el gatuzo (Mustelus schmitti). La pescadilla se capturó con línea de mano durante todo el año, esencialmente entre septiembre y diciembre. Para la captura de gatuzo, que se realizó durante marzo-abril y septiembre- diciembre, se utilizaron redes de enmalle y, en menor proporción, espineles. Durante el período de estudio se estimó el desembarque total de pescadilla (704 t), gatuzo (607,6 t), palometa (Parona signata, 95,8 t), corvina (Micropogonias furnieri, 40,9 t) y del grupo de rayas (33,6 t). El total de desembarques (de alrededor de 1.500 t) así como los discriminados por especie constituyen una estimación de la captura de 12 meses de esa pesquería a pequeña escala que representó, aproximadamente, el 6% de los desembarques totales de especies del conjunto "Variado Costero" proveniente de la zona de "El Rincón".
