At daybreak on 10th december 2004, the 207 m-length cargo ship "P&O Nedlloyd Pantanal" arrived to the quarantine area of the port of Guayaquil with a Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) pinned on the bow, only then the crew realized about the event. The whale laid on its belly with the left side towards the ship's bow. It was fresh and still had the epidermis with its original color. The whale's right side had extensive bruising behind the pectoral fin through the dorsal fin and further below, which indicates that the animal was alive when was struck. The collision would occur the night before between 20:00 and 21:00 hours in the southern part of the Gulf of Guayaquil, in the border between Ecuador and Peru (3°34'S, 80°48'W), when the speed of the ship dropped from 18.5 to 16.8 knots, without obvious reason. This is the first time that a collision with a whale is officially reported to occur in Ecuador and one of the few known cases in the Southeast Pacific. Some recommendations are provided to local authorities in order to establish the frequency of these events.
