Resumo:  La clasificación adoptada es la del Dr. Leo S. Berg, según la última edici6n (1955) de su "Clasificaci6n de Peces Recientes y Fósiles". Prefiero adaptarme a ella casi enteramente, entre otras razones, para conservar una unidad de referencia. Las otras obras que han servido de base son: "Fishes of North and Middle America", Jordan & Evermann, 1896-1900, abreviado en el texto JEC "Check List of Fishes and Fish like Vertebrates of North and Middle America", Jordan, Evermann & Clark, 1928, abreviado JEC; y los dos vo lumenes publicados de "Fishes of the Western North Atlantic", Partes I y 11, Bigelow & Schroeder, 1948 y 1953, abreviado BS. En conjunto encierran todos log nombres empleados para desig- nar a los peces de nuestras aguas, así como también permiten com- pletar, al remitirnos a las páginas correspondientes, la sinonimia mas usual, especialmente la de Poey. Tanto los géneros de cada familia, como las especies dentro de cada género, se numeran en orden alfabético. Las categorías superiores al género llevan a continuación los nombres equivalentes, suprimiendo en las familias los que se refieren a fósiles.
