More than forty surveys starting from 1982 to 1998 and covering all the continental shelf are used for studying the spatial distribution of Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) in the Mauritanian EEZ. GIS are first used. Results and their consistency are then compared with the outcome of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) done on the same data set. We show a seasonal dichotomy in the distribution pattern with a great contrast within the year between cold season (January to May) and warm season (August to October). This spatial structure seems not to be due to migration. This general distribution scheme shows two ways of inter-annual fluctuations leading to Octopus area expansion. Depth fluctuations was related mainly to cold seasons variations while latitudinal one was in the warm seasons.
