One of the aims of the EU-funded OrganicDataNetwork project is to collect, store in a common format and provide access to currently available data on organic markets in Europe. Two surveys on production, retail sales, international trade data were carried out. The surveys have shown that a wide range of data is available but a number of challenges need to be tackled in the future. These challenges include lack of data, non-timeliness and incompleteness of data, as well as classification issues as – other than with the area and production data – almost every country uses a different classification/nomenclature for retail sales, export and import data. Other issues include non-harmonised definitions and data quality. For the first time, organic market data by product and by sales channel were stored in a common database making a European comparison possible.
