The Una River Basin spreads over hilly slopes with elevation varying from 500m to 1,300m above sea level in an area of 476 km2 and a length of the longest channel with approximately 68 km. This area has a long history of land use (over 400 years) that resulted in a land ownership pattern of small farms spread around a dense road network that are used for transportation of agricultural production mainly from dairy farms. These roads follow without exception the drainage network, especially of the major Una tributaries. In addition to the short distance from the rivers, they were constructed without any attention to erosion from hill cuts, water runoff contention or collection structures to avoid gullies or landslides. A complete geospatial data bank has been developed for the entire basin that contains the roads and drainage networks. A quantitative evaluation of the distance between the roads and rivers revealed that approximately 70% of the roads are within 100m from the rivers.
