Resumo: |
An electron microscopic study of the accessory nidamental glands from Sepia officinalis L. shows a secretory cycle in the epithelial cells and the presence of bacteria in the tubules of the gland. A correlation between sexual maturity, the color of the gland and the total number of symbiotic bacteria can be demonstrated. A biochemical study shows that the correlation of the gland is due to several carotenoid pigments. The most important of these is an orange-red xanthophyll that has been called Sepiaxanthine. It is probably formed in the bacteria as a result of the secretory activity of the epithelial glandular cells. This whole mechanism and the role of the bacteria and pigments need further research.
