Resumo: |
Over the past 220 years since European settlement, Australia has amassed a diverse array of historic heritage places. Currently there are approximately 200,000 places listed on statutory heritage lists across the nation. Owing to the public-good nature of heritage, community values for the preservation of historic places (both quality and quantity dimensions) is not readily observable from market transactions. Yet this information is critical for efficient management of heritage. This study uses a survey technique (Choice Modelling) to estimate value estimates. To the author's knowledge, it is the first study to use this approach to understand community preferences for alternative protection outcomes at a national level as opposed to site specific valuations.
