Puma yagouaroundi es una especie no estudiada en San Luis Potosí. En este estudio se obtuvieron nuevos registros, se describió el hábitat y se crearon las bases para un modelo de distribución potencial. El muestreo se llevó a cabo de octubre 2008- mayo 2009 mediante entrevistas en 96 comunidades rurales de la Zona Media, Centro y Huasteca. La información se agrupó en tres clases usando un criterio analítico de veracidad. Los lugares donde hubo avistamientos se visitaron y se tomaron los datos del hábitat. Se obtuvieron 58 registros de presencia y 34 de ausencia. Los pastizales (24%), zonas de cultivo (21%), y selvas (19%) fueron los tipos de vegetación más frecuentes en los sitios de avistamiento. Las selvas (46%) y pastizales (22%) como vegetación aledaña fueron los tipos de vegetación más importantes. La cobertura de acecho densa (>50%) fue importante para la especie, independientemente del tipo de vegetación. La cobertura de acecho y la vegetación aledaña fueron las variables más importantes para la presencia del felino (p<0.05). Con estas variables se realizó un mapa de distribución potencial, basado en los principios de un Proceso de Análisis Jerarquizado. Las áreas más aptas para la distribución del jaguarundi en el Estado comprenden las subprovincias de la Gran Sierra Plegada y la subprovincia del Carso Huasteco. Los resultados de este estudio aportan nuevos registros y datos del hábitat, así como las bases de un modelo de distribución para los programas de conservación de esta especie amenazada. _______________ GEOGRAPHIC AND ECOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION OF JAGUARUNDI (Puma yagouaroundi) IN SAN LUIS POTOSÍ. ABSTRACT: There are no researches of Puma yagouaroundi in the State of San Luis Potosi, neither data regarding its habitat preferences or distribution. The main objective of this study was to locate new records focused on the P. yagouaroundi current distribution and habitat characteristics. Data were obtained from 96 rural communities in three state regions: Huasteca Potosina, Zona Media and Zona Centro from october 2008 to may 2009, by semi-structured interviews in several communities through casual conversations with individuals whose daily activities allow them to observe the local fauna. The data from these interviews were processed and grouped into 3 classes using analytical criteria of credibility. A sampling survey was conducted in the areas pointed out by those individuals interviewed and the habitat information was collected. Out of 96 communities visited, we obtain 58 new records of presence. In addition we obtained 34 records of absence. Most of the evidence was obtained in high grasslands (24%), agricultural areas (21%), and tropical forest (19%). Surrounding vegetation was closely observed and the most frequent types were tropical forest (46%) and grasslands (22%). Ambush cover >50% was important to this felid, regardless the vegetation type. Surrounding vegetation and ambush cover were the most significant habitat variables (p<0.05). We created a potential distribution map with these variables, based on AHP principles. Optimal areas for jaguarundi distribution were located in La Gran Sierra Plegada and Carso Huasteco. This research provides new data of P. yagouaroundi, including recent records, potential habitat, and a distribution model, that could be used to define conservation strategies for the jaguarundi in San Luis Potosí, México.
