Resumo: |
The ecology of Charlestown and Green Hill Ponds was radically altered by the construction in 1952, of a permanent inlet reinforced by mass ive stone jetties that replaced a natural seasonal inlet. The permane nt breachway was built to enhance recreational activities. Thirty yea rs later it is clear that the permanent breachway has brought the dem ise of the oysters and other formerly abundant species such as white perch and alewives; it is also causing large volumes of sand to flow into the lagoon that threaten to cut the lagoon in two within the next 20 to 30 years. The vest solution to these problems appears to be the ins tallation of a navigable tidal gate combined with a sediment catchmen t basin.
