This article outlines the background and planning for a South American workshop on marine biodiversity in Concepcion, Chile, 28-30 October, 2002. This first CoML/POGO effort in the Southern hemisphere, pursuant to the Sao Paulo declaration began with presentations in all major coastal states and brings together key South American researchers to take advantage of new research concepts emerging from the Census projects. Cet article met en lumière les objectifs et l’organisation d’un programme de travail sur la biodiversité marine des mers bordant l’Amérique du Sud, mis au point lors d’un atelier tenu à Conception au Chili en octobre 2002. Ce premier programme conjoint sur l’hémisphère Sud, suite à la déclaration de Sao Paulo, a d’abord permis de dresser un état des connaissances pour les principales aires côtières. Ensuite, il permit aux chercheurs sud-américains de se doter de nouveaux concepts dans le domaine du recensement de la vie marine.
