The genera of the subfamilies Betylobraconinae, Hormiinae, Lysiterminae, Pambolinae-Chremylini, and Doryctinae-Ypsistocerini are revised. A key is given to the genera of groups belonging to the cyclostome grade including species with shortened and/or (partly) widened fore tarsus. Sixteen new genera and 62 new species are described and illustrated. The new genera concern: Mannokeraia gen. nov. (type species: M. apterus spec. nov. from Australia), Masona gen. nov. (type species: M. prognatha spec. nov. from U.S.A.), Anachyra gen. nov. (type species: A. setosipes spec. nov. from Australia), Pseudochremylus gen. nov. (type species: P. angulifer spec. nov. from Australia), Chremyloides gen. nov. (type species: C. cardaleae spec. nov. from Australia), Apoavga... |

Ten new species of Braconidae (Hymenoptera) from French Guyana, Suriname and Panama are described and illustrated. Seven species of the genus Pambolus Haliday, 1836, (Pambolinae: P. pappi spec. nov., and P. rufus spec. nov. from French Guyana, P. granulatus spec. nov. from Suriname, P. duplotaeniatus spec. nov., P. hemitaeniatus spec. nov., P. micropennis spec. nov., and P. microstriatus spec. nov. from Panama) and three species of the genus Phaenocarpa Foerster, 1862 (Alysiinae: P. acarinata spec. nov. and P. insolita spec. nov. from French Guyana, and P. areolata spec. nov. from Panama). Keys to the Neotropical species of both genera are given. Some data on the distribution of other Neotropical species of the genera Phaenocarpa, Idiasta Foerster and... |

Seven new species of the genus Aleiodes Wesmael, 1838 (Braconidae: Rogadinae) are described and illustrated: A. abraxanae sp. n., A. angustipterus sp. n., A. artesiariae sp. n., A. carminatus sp. n., A. diarsianae sp. n., A. leptofemur sp. n., and A. ryrholmi sp. n. A neotype is designated for each of Aleiodes circumscriptus (Nees, 1834) and A. pictus (Herrich-Schäffer, 1838), and both species are redescribed and illustrated. Aleiodes ochraceus Hellén, 1927 (not A. ochraceus (Curtis, 1834)) is renamed as A. curticornis nom. n. & stat. rev., and redescribed and illustrated. Aleiodes bistrigatus Roman, 1917, A. nigriceps Wesmael, 1838, and A. reticulatus (Noskiewicz, 1956), are re-instated as valid species. A lectotype is designated for Aleiodes... |

The West Palaearctic species of the genus Bassus Fabricius, 1804 (Braconidae: Agathidinae) are revised and keyed, together with the similar Agathis mediator group. Twenty-two species of Bassus and four species of the Agathis mediator group are recognized, of which three are new: B. barbieri from Algeria, B. epinotiae from Great Britain, and B. graecus from Greece. Seven species are synonymized: Microdus lugubrator Ratzeburg, 1852 with B. mediator (Nees, 1814), Microdus punctatus Abdinbekova, 1975 with B. rugulosus (Nees, 1834), Microdus annae Enderlein, 1908, Microdus victoris Telenga, 1955, and M. anuphrievi Tobias, 1986 with B. tumidulus (Nees, 1814), Microdus rufiventris Abdinbekova, 1975 with B. nugax (Reinhard, 1867), and Agathis minuta Niezabitowski,... |

Non-professional taxonomists have been responsible for describing more than half of the animal species discovered in Europe from 1998 to 2007 (see also Nature 467, 788; 2010). The extraordinary current rate of description of new species makes Europe an unexpected frontier for biodiversity exploration. The Fauna Europaea database (http://www.faunaeur.org), released in 2004, lists more than 125,000 European species of multicellular terrestrial and freshwater animals. More than 700 new species are described each year in Europe — four times the rate of two centuries ago. However, we have not yet reached saturation in the inventory of European fauna, and we cannot accurately estimate the total number of species living in the continent's ecosystems. |
