Nutrient use efficiency and arbuscular mycorrhizal root colonisation of winter wheat cultivars in different farming systems of the DOK long-term trial Organic Eprints
Hildermann, Isabell; Messmer, Monika; Dubois, David; Boller, Thomas; Wiemken, Andres; Mäder, Paul.
BACKGROUND: For organic farming, cultivars are required with high nutrient use efficiency under nutrient limited conditions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to contribute to nutrient uptake under low input conditions. We compared nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of old and modern organically and conventionally bred cultivars in organic and conventional systems and assessed AMF-root colonisation (AMF-RC) in relation to nutrient concentrations. RESULTS: Cultivars and systems had a statistically significant effect on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and NUE parameters, whereas no genotype × environment interactions appeared. In contrast to N and P uptake, the NUE parameters were higher under organic than under conventional...

Stickstoffbilanzen in biologischen und konventionellen Anbausystemen Das Effizienz-Nachhaltigkeits-Dilemma Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Jarosch, KA.; Hammelehle, Andreas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Bosshard, C.; Frossard, Emmanuel; Mäder, Paul; Oberson, Astrid.
N-balances over 35 years from the DOK trial are presented and combined with Nstock changes in DOK treatments on different fertilisation levels. Results strongly indicate an N efficiency-sustainability dilemma: DOK treatments with a high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) lose more soil stock N than those with a lower NUE but higher N losses from the system. The biodynamic system showed little advantage in terms of soil N stocks sustainability while the solely mineral fertilised conventional treatment had highest NUE across all inputs including soil N change.

Fresh and residual phosphorus uptake by ryegrass from soils with different fertilization histories Organic Eprints
Oberson, Astrid; Tagmann, Hans U.; Langmeier, Monika; Dubois, David; Mäder, Paul; Frossard, Emmanuel.
Organic farming largely depends on animal manure as a source of phosphorus (P) and the recycling of animal manure globally is becoming increasingly important. In a pot experiment, using radioactive P labeling techniques, we studied ryegrass uptake of P applied with animal manure and water soluble mineral fertilizer to soils that had been cropped for 22 years according to organic or conventional farming practices. The soils differed in P status and microbial activity. Labeling soil-available P also allowed assessing the uptake from residual P that remained in the soils because of their different fertilization histories. On each soil, recovery of fresh manure P in four harvests of ryegrass shoots was lower than recovery of mineral P. It ranged from 24% to...

Soil Fertility and Biodiversity in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fliessbach, Andreas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Fried, Padruot; Niggli, Urs.
An understanding of agroecosystems is a key to determining effective farming systems. Here we report results from a 21-year study of agronomic and ecological performance of biodynamic, bioorganic, and conventional farming systems in Central Europe. We found crop yields to be 20% lower in the organic systems, although input of fertilizer and energy was reduced by 34 to 53% and pesticide input by 97%. Enhanced soil fertility and higher biodiversity found in organic plots may render these systems less dependent on external inputs.

Consumers have become more aware of healthy and safe food produced with low environmental impact. We studied the quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., winter form) grown in a 21-year agro-system comparison between organic and conventional farming in Central Europe, known as the DOK experiment. The 71% lower addition by plant available nitrogen to the organic field plots led to 14% lower wheat yields. However, the nutritional value, i.e. protein content and baking quality, were hardly affected by the farming systems. Despite exclusion of fungicides from the organic production systems, the quantities of mycotoxins detected in wheat grains did not differ. Food preference tests, as an integrative method, indicated a tendency for rats to prefer organically...

The Ins and Outs of Organic Farming. FiBL response to the letter of Goklany in Science Vol 298 Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fließbach, Andreas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Fried, Padrout; Niggli, Urs.
Goklany stated that 20 % lower crop yields in organic farming would require 25 % more land use to produce the same amount of crop biomass, offsetting some of the advantages of organic agriculture with respect to biological diversity, inputs, and soil erosion, and that the experimental yields are not typical. Furthermore, he indicates that organic farming might not be sufficient to feed the world.

Phosphor- und Kalium-Bilanzen über 35 Jahre DOK-Versuch & geschätzte K-Nachlieferungsraten auf einem Lössboden Organic Eprints
Jarosch, KA.; Gunst, Lucie; Dubois, David; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen.
We calculated a phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) balance for the DOK-trial (Therwil, Switzerland) for a 35-years cropping period. In the DOK-trial, three cropping systems (D: biodynamic, O: bioorganic and K: conventional) are maintained on both a full (2) and a halved (1) fertilization level. Additionally, a treatment with no fertilization (N) and mineral fertilization (M; since 1985) are included. Balance inputs included fertilization, deposition, nutrients inputs by seeds, while in the outputs removal of nutrients by harvested plant material and leaching was considered. For P, the balance was positive for treatment M and treatment O2, but negative for the other treatments. The K-balance was positive only for treatment M, while treatments D2, O2 and K2...

Country Report on Organic Farming Research in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Niggli, Urs; Willer, Helga; Fried, Padruot M.; Strasser, Freddie; Dubois, David; Baumann, Daniel; Kaufmann, Robert; Gallmann, Peter; Charles, Raphael.
The report presents the current (2005) status of organic farming resarch in Switzerland. Switzerland has a long history of organic farming research, which in its beginnings has been carried out by organic farming pioneers and by private institutions like the Goetheanum, Möschberg Centre and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). It was in the 1990s, when Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Stations (Agroscope) became also involved in organic research topics. It can be estimated that currently approximately € 7.5 million per annum are allocated very specifically to organic farming research from public budgets. The National Research Programme is organised according to a four-year research concept of the Swiss Federal Office of...

Jossi, Werner; Bruderer, Ruth; Valenta, Anna; Schweizer, Christian; Scherrer, Caroline; Keller, Siegfried; Dubois, David.

Hildermann, Isabell; Thommen, Andreas; Dubois, David; Boller, Thomas; Wiemken, Andres; Mäder, Paul.
Due to limited nutrient conditions in organic farming winter wheat cultivars can often not perform to the full extent of their genetic potential. This study aims to assess nutrient acquisition potential and yields of old, organically and conventionally bred winter wheat cultivars. Ten cultivars were tested within the DOK long-term experiment in two organic systems at low and moderate intensity, a conventional stockless system and an unfertilized control. Yields and nutrient contents of grain and straw were significantly affected by cultivars and systems. Cultivar x system interactions were not detected. Yields were increasing with nutrient level and year of release of cultivars. Under organic conditions all cultivars performed equally well with...

How economic is organic? Results of a long-term trial at Burgrain/Lucerne, Switzerland Organic Eprints
Fried, Padruot M.; Zihlmann, Urs; Strasser, Fredi; Tschachtli, Ruedi; Ammann, Helmut; Dubois, David.
Long-term trials are necessary not only to judge agronomic and ecological indicators when studying organic farming, but also to analyze and describe economic parameters. From 1997-2002, an organic arable farming system (Bio) was compared with two Integrated farming systems (IP intensive and IP extensive) on 6 plots in a 6-year crop rotation at Burgrain near Lucerne, Switzerland. The 6 plots were subdivided into 3 subplots of 0.65 ha each. In the organic system, the input of fertilizer and pesticides was substantially reduced, which resulted in a yield reduction of 19% over all 4 arable crops and of 14% if the temporary lays are included. Nevertheless, the organic system showed an excellent net profit, mainly due to the higher prices paid to the farmers for...

Micronutrient status in two long-term trials with fertilisation treatments and different cropping systems Organic Eprints
Fischer, Meike; Raupp, Joachim; Mäder, Paul; Dubois, David; Römheld, Volker.
Although organic fertilisers always contain micronutrients, we have to pay attention to the question of whether continuous fertilisation will lead to lower contents in plants or lower availability in the long run. We investigated topsoil samples from long-term trials with farmyard manure and mineral fertili-sation and with different organic and conventional farming systems. Input of micronutrients via or-ganic fertilisers was obviously more significant in the case of poor sandy soil than in that of loamy soil with high total contents and higher mineralising potential.

Auswirkungen reduzierter Hofdüngergaben im Bioackerbau Organic Eprints
Dubois, David; Mäder, Paul; Fliessbach, Andreas; Strasser, Fredi.

Nitrogen fertilizer value of cattle manure applied on soils originating from organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Langmeier, Monika; Frossard, Emmanuel; Kreuzer, Michael; Mäder, Paul; Dubois, David; Oberson, Astrid.
Nitrogen nutrition of plants in organic farming depends largely on animal manure. In a pot experiment the hypothesis was tested that on a long-term organically managed soil (ORG) characterized by higher soil microbial activity, a greater portion of N applied as cattle manure is mineralized and taken up by plants than on a conventionally managed soil that had received exclusively mineral fertilizers (MIN). Dry matter yields and N uptake by Italian ryegrass were higher by around 20% on ORG than MIN soil. The N utilization of 15N labeled animal manure components and mineralNdiffered little between ORG and MIN. The major part of the increasedNuptake on ORG compared with MIN was due to a significantly greater N supply from ORG soil. The increased capacity of...

Soil microbial community structure and organic matter transformation processes in organic and integrated farming systems Organic Eprints
Fliessbach, Andreas; Dubois, David; Esperschütz, Jürgen; Gunst, Lucie; Mäder, Paul; Oberholzer, Hansruedi; Schloter, Michael; Gattinger, Andreas.
The DOK long-term field trial in Switzerland started in 1978 (Mäder et al., 2002). Biodynamic (BIODYN), bioorganic (BIOORG) and integrated (CONFYM) farming systems with manure fertilization, an integrated system based on mineral fertilizer only (CONMIN) and an unfertilized control (NOFERT) were investigated for changes in soil organic matter and on the structure of the soil microbial communities. Soil organic matter (SOM) in the Ap-horizon (0-20 cm) was analysed from the beginning of the DOK field trial in 1978. Roughly 20% of the initial SOM was lost when no manure was applied for 21 years as in the CONMIN and the NOFERT system, whereas SOM increased slightly by 4% in the BIODYN system that makes use of composted farmyard manure, corresponding to 1.4...
