Environmental factors affecting maerl bed structure in Brittany (France) ArchiMer
Dutertre, Mickael; Grall, Jacques; Ehrhold, Axel; Hamon, Dominique.
This study used a large spatial scale approach in order to better quantify the relationships between maerl bed structure and a selection of potentially forcing physical factors. Data on maerl bed structure and morpho-sedimentary characteristics were obtained from recent oceanographic surveys using underwater video recording and grab sampling. Considering the difficulties in carrying out real-time monitoring of highly variable hydrodynamic and physicochemical factors, these were generated by three-dimensional numerical models with high spatial and temporal resolution. The BIOENV procedure indicated that variation in the percentage cover of thalli can best be explained (correlation = 0.76) by a combination of annual mean salinity, annual mean nitrate...

This study aims to describe the patterns of soft bottom macrozoobenthic richness along French coasts. It is based on a collaborative database developed by the “Réseau des Stations et Observatoires Marins” (RESOMAR). We investigated patterns of species richness in sublittoral soft bottom habitats (EUNIS level 3) at two different spatial scales: 1) seaboards: English Channel, Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean Sea and 2) 0.5° latitudinal and longitudinal grid. Total observed richness, rarefaction curves and three incidence-based richness estimators (Chao2, ICE and Jacknife1) were used to compare soft bottom habitats species richness in each seaboard. Overall, the Mediterranean Sea has the highest richness and despite higher sampling effort, the English Channel...

The Impossible Sustainability of the Bay of Brest? Fifty Years of Ecosystem Changes, Interdisciplinary Knowledge Construction and Key Questions at the Science-Policy-Community Interface ArchiMer
Ragueneau, Olivier; Raimonet, Melanie; Maze, Camille; Coston-guarini, Jennifer; Chauvaud, Laurent; Danto, Anatole; Grall, Jacques; Jean, Frederic; Paulet, Yves-marie; Thouzeau, Gerard.
In this contribution, the study of the Bay of Brest ecosystem changes over the past 50 years is used to explore the construction of interdisciplinary knowledge and raise key questions that now need to be tackled at the science-policy-communities interface. The Bay of Brest is subject to a combination of several aspects of global change, including excessive nutrient inputs from watersheds and the proliferation of invasive species. These perturbations strongly interact, affecting positively or negatively the ecosystem functioning, with important impacts on human activities. We first relate a cascade of events over these five decades, linking farming activities, nitrogen, and silicon biogeochemical cycles, hydrodynamics of the Bay, the proliferation of an...

Declining maerl vitality and habitat complexity across a dredging gradient: Insights from in situ sediment profile imagery (SPI) ArchiMer
Bernard, Guillaume; Romero-ramirez, Alicia; Tauran, Adeline; Pantalos, Michael; Deflandre, Bruno; Grall, Jacques; Gremare, Antoine.
Maerl beds form complex biogenic benthic habitats, characterized by high productivity as well as diverse biological communities. Disturbances associated with extraction and/or fishing activities using mobile bottom-contacting gears such as clam-dredges induce the most severe and long-term effects on these fragile habitats. We here investigated the effects of dredge-fishing on maerl in the bay of Brest (France). We quantified maerl beds structure and vitality across a fine scale quantified dredging intensity gradient through the acquisition of in-situ images of beds cross-section using Sediment Profile Imaging system (SPI). Declines in the proxies of maerl vitality and habitat complexity were measured across the gradient, and were associated with...

Based on a parallel sampling conducted during autumn 2008, a comparative study of the intertidal benthic macrofauna among 10 estuarine systems located along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France was performed in order to assess the level of fauna similarity among these sites and to identify possible environmental factors involved in the observed pattern at both large (among sites) and smaller (benthic assemblages) scales. More precisely this study focused on unraveling the observed pattern of intertidal benthic fauna composition and diversity observed at among-sites scale by exploring both biotic and abiotic factors acting at the among- and within-site scales. Results showed limited level of similarity at the among-site level in terms of intertidal...

Metabarcoding is powerful yet still blind: a comparative analysis of morphological and molecular surveys of seagrass communities ArchiMer
Cowart, Dominique A.; Pinheiro, Miguel; Mouchel, Olivier; Maguer, Marion; Grall, Jacques; Mine, Jacques; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
In the context of the sixth wave of extinction, reliable surveys of biodiversity are increasingly needed to infer the cause and consequences of species and community declines, identify early warning indicators of tipping points, and provide reliable impact assessments before engaging in activities with potential environmental hazards. DNA metabarcoding has emerged as having potential to provide speedy assessment of community structure from environmental samples. Here we tested the reliability of metabarcoding by comparing morphological and molecular inventories of invertebrate communities associated with sea-grasses through estimates of alpha and beta diversity, as well as the identification of the most abundant taxa. Sediment samples were collected from...

Small-scale effects of hydrodynamics on the structure of intertidal macroalgal communities: A novel approach ArchiMer
Burel, Thomas; Schaal, Gauthier; Grall, Jacques; Le Duff, Michel; Chapalain, Georges; Schmitt, Blondie; Gemin, Maxence; Boucher, Olivier; Ar Gall, Erwan.
Wave height was used as a proxy to assess the effect of hydrodynamics on the development and structure of intertidal North-East Atlantic rocky macroalgal communities (Brittany). The characterization of hydrodynamics at small-scale (about 10 m) was performed through wave height in situ monitoring using pressure sensors. Both the diversity and the cover of the macroalgal communities were sampled in parallel. Wave heights exhibit large variations with values ranging from ca. 5 cm to 1.60 m. We show that wave height directly controls the cover of macroalgal canopies (Pearson's r between −0.62 and −0.39). In all communities, most of the fucoid covers regressed with increasing wave height values. By contrast, positive correlations were found at low shore levels...

Heterogeneous energetic pathways and carbon sources on deep eastern Mediterranean cold seep communities ArchiMer
Carlier, Antoine; Ritt, Benedicte; Rodrigues, Clara F.; Sarrazin, Jozee; Olu, Karine; Grall, Jacques; Clavier, Jacques.
Cold seep communities in the Mediterranean Sea have only been discovered two decades ago, and their trophic ecology has been the subject of very few studies. We investigated the benthic food web of two deep chemosynthesis-based ecosystems on the Napoli and Amsterdam mud volcanoes (MVs) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (similar to 2,000 m depth). Seeping methane has been detected at the surface of both MVs during pioneering cruises and has been hypothesised to be assimilated by benthic fauna as observed in other oceans' margins. Given the extreme oligotrophic character of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, we a priori expected that chemosynthetic food sources, especially methane-derived carbon (MDC), played a major trophic role in these deep seep communities...

Meiofauna communities’ response to an anthropogenic pressure: The case study of green macroalgal bloom on sandy beach in Brittany ArchiMer
Baldrighi, Elisa; Grall, Jacques; Quillien, Nolwenn; Carriço, Rita; Verdon, Valentin; Zeppilli, Daniela.
Open sandy beaches support key ecological functions and a distinctive biodiversity, but are threatened by an increasing anthropogenic pressure. Among these threats is the occurrence of green tides of Ulva spp., expression of the eutrophication phenomenon. Our study aimed at determining the impact of green macroalgal accumulations on benthic meiofauna inhabiting two macrotidal sandy beaches of Brittany: Saint Nic (impacted) and Anse de Dinan (unimpacted). The presence of Ulva enhanced total meiofaunal abundance and nematode functional diversity when compared to a state free from macroalgal mats. The stranded Ulva supported high values of meiofaunal β-diversity as well. This unexpected response was likely due to the highly dynamic nature of open sandy...

Identification des post-larves de deux Calyptraeidae Calyptraea chinensis et Crepidula fornicata ArchiMer
Jezequel, Youenn; Carlier, Antoine; Grall, Jacques.
This study presents four morphological criteria based on the shell, determined under a stereomicroscope, allowing the identification of the Calyptraeidae’s post larvae in Calyptraea chinensis and Crepidula fornicata from a 0.7mm size. The septum shape in C. chinensis is spiraled while in C. fornicata it is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shell (beginning of the lodge’s formation), which constitutes the most reliable criterion when trying to discriminate between the species. C. chinensis shells coloration appears homogeneous and concentric whereas colored spots are observed on C. fornicata shells. Calyptraea chinensis shell shape is circular while Crepidula fornicata shell shape is oval. Lastly the apex appears centered in C. chinensis and...

Easier detection of invertebrate "identification-key characters" with light of different wavelengths ArchiMer
Koken, Marcel; Grall, Jacques.
The marine alpha-taxonomist often encounters two problems. Firstly, the "environmental dirt" that is frequently present on the specimens and secondly the difficulty in distinguishing key-features due to the uniform colours which fixed animals often adopt. Here we show that illuminating animals with deep-blue or ultraviolet light instead of the normal white-light abrogates both difficulties; dirt disappears and important details become clearly visible. This light regime has also two other advantages. It allows easy detection of very small, normally invisible, animals (0.1 mu m range). And as these light wavelengths can induce fluorescence, new identification markers may be discovered by this approach.

First and repeated records of the tropical-temperate crab Asthenognathus atlanticus Monod, 1932 (Decapoda: Brachyura) in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel, France) ArchiMer

Asthenognathus atlanticus Monod, 1932, has been reported for the first time from the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel). A total of 30 specimens were collected between the years 2008 and 2011, along the Normandy coast from Ouistreham to Antifer, mainly on mud and muddy sand habitats, between 10 and 25 m depth. The distribution range of A. atlanticus has been previously known to cover eastern Atlantic coasts from Angola to the western English Channel, where it reached its northern limits. It is also present in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. The changes in the sediment composition of the eastern Bay of Seine have probably led to the development of a potentially favorable habitat for this species. However, the data...
