Decapoda and Decapod larvae in the surface plankton from the Southern North Sea near "Texel" lightship Naturalis
Baan, S.M. van der; Holthuis, L.B.; Schrieken, B..
INTRODUCTION From mid-January 1961 until the end of 1966 macroplankton was collected by the crew of "Texel" lightship (position: 53°01'30"Ν 04°22' E) and identified afterwards in the Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee, at that time still in Den Helder. The nets, of Saran gauze with a 2 mm mesh and an opening of 1 m2, were originally intended for catching elvers, for investigations reported upon by Creutzberg, 1961. The original aim of the present plankton project was to catch Scyphomedusae, but soon after it had been started all the available macroplankton was sorted out and, if possible, identified. This explains why the decapod larvae, dealt with in the present paper, came to be collected by nets, quite unfit for that purpose. When the meshes...

On the type specimen of Vanderbiltia rosamondae Boone (Crustacea Decapoda Macrura) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
In 1935 Lee Boone in Bulletin of the Vanderbilt Marine Museum vol. 6 (pp. 160-163, pls. 41, 42) described and figured a shrimp, which she thought to belong to a new genus and species of the Palaemonid subfamily Pontoniinae, and which she named Vanderbiltia rosamondae. Boone's figures and description show that the specimen cannot possibly be a Pontoniid shrimp, but it proves to be impossible from these data alone to place the species anywhere in the system. In my report on the Pontoniinae of the Siboga Expedition (Holthuis, 1952, p. 22), therefore, I listed Vanderbiltia rosamondae (misspelled rosamundae by me) under the "species described as Pontoniinae, but not belonging in this subfamily'', and remarked that the species shows some resemblance to the...

Scyllarides obtusus spec. nov., the scyllarid lobster of Saint Helena, Central South Atlantic (Crustacea: Decapoda Reptantia: Scyllaridae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
A new species of slipper lobster is described from Saint Helena, where the species seems to be endemic. Known under the vernacular name Stump, the species forms the subject of a local fishery, carried out since early times. Previously the species has been identified with various Scyllarides species from the Atlantic and East Africa.

Tevens...

Short note on the occurrence of Cumacea in the surface plankton collected at "Texel" lightship in the Southern North Sea Naturalis
Baan, S.M. van der; Holthuis, L.B..
From mid-January 1961 until the end of 1966 macroplankton was collected in the surface water of the North Sea around "Texel" lightship (position: 53°01'3o"N 04°22'E). As pointed out in a recent paper on decapod larvae (Van der Baan, Holthuis & Schrieken, 1972) the plankton nets were originally intended for collecting elvers and medusae, and the numbers of smaller species obtained, such as larvae and also Cumacea, was greatly influenced by incidental circumstances. Therefore no great significance can be attached to the actual numbers of these smaller animals. Cumacea are mostly bottom-dwelling species, and cannot regularly be expected in surface waters. Still, four species were found in our samples viz.: Diastylis bradyi Norman, 1879 Iphinoe trispinosa...

Nomenclatural notes on Mediterranean species of Calappa Weber, 1795 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Abstract: The species name Calappa rissoana Pastore, 1995, is a junior synonym of both C. rosea Jarocki, 1825, and C. webbiana Risso, 1977. The possibility of a narrow relationship between, or even of a synonymy of, C. tuerkayana and C. gallus has been pointed out.

H. Milne Edwards's "Histoire Naturelle des Crustacés" (1834-1840) and its dates of publication Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Introduction. — By far the most important and fundamental carcinological publication of the first half of the 19th century unquestionably is Henri Milne Edwards's (1834-1840) "Histoire naturelle des Crustacés", which treated all species of Crustacea known at that time in an exceedingly clear and comprehensive manner. The work was published in three volumes of text and one atlas. The dates of publication of it have never caused any difficulty. It was generally accepted that volume I was published in 1834, volume II in 1837, and volume III in 1840. These dates have never been challenged, and on closer examination indeed prove to be correct. About the date or dates of the atlas authors were vague and usually cited 1834-1840, or 1840, or they cited the atlas...

Notes on the Localities, Habitats, Biology, colour and vernacular names of new Guinea Freshwater Crabs (Crustacea Decapoda, Sundathelphusidae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
From October 1954 to May 1955 three staff members of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (Dr. L. D. Brongersma, Dr. M. Boeseman and myself) visited Netherlands New Guinea (at present officially named West Irian, and part of Indonesia) with the object to make zoological collections there and to study the fauna of this most interesting area. Dr. Boeseman as an ichthyologist, and myself as a carcinologist, devoted a large part of our available time to the freshwater fauna. Although most of Dr. Boeseman's attention was given to fishes, and my main interest was with macrurous Decapoda, we brought together fair collections of fresh water crabs, and both of us made field notes on these collections. The late Dr. Richard Bott 1) of the Senckenberg Museum,...

Pontonides sympathes, a new species of commensal shrimp (Crustacea, Decapoda, Pontoniinae) from Antipatharia in the Galapagos Islands Naturalis
Ridder, Ch. de; Holthuis, L.B..
During a stay at the Galapagos Islands (1975-1976), one of us (Ch. de Ridder) made a study of Gorgonaria and Antipatharia, paying special attention to commensals found with these corals. On Antipathes galapagensis Deichmann, 1941, a species of the pontoniine shrimp genus Pontonides was observed, which proved to be new to science. The present paper describes the new species and its living conditions. Pontonides sympathes new species (figs. 1-3) Material examined. — Punta Pitt, north-east coast of San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador; on Antipathes galapagensis Deichmann growing on a lava bottom at a depth of 8 m; surface water temperature 23.9oC; 2 February 1976; Ch. A collection of Decapod Crustacea from Sumba, Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The Sumba-Expedition undertaken by Dr. E . Sutter of the Naturhistorisches Museum of Basle and Dr. A . Bühler of the Museum für Völkerkunde of the same town, visited the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, in 1949. Dr. Sutter, the zoologist, stayed in the islands from 19 May to 26 November; most of the time was spent by him in Sumba (21 May-31 October), and extensive collections were made there, among which a most interesting material of Decapod Crustacea, which forms the subject of the present paper. A few Crustacea were collected on the islands of Sumbawa (on 19 May) and Flores (19 and 21 November). The animals taken at Flores belong to species also obtained in Sumba and will be treated here with those; at Sumbawa two hermit crabs belonging to the species...

Three species of Crustacea Decapoda Macrura from Southern Brazil, including a new species of Upogebia Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
In June 1954, during an ecological study of the mangroves near the Research Station of the São Paulo University Oceanographic Institute at Cananeia, about 200 km south of Santos, southern Brazil, Dr. S. Gerlach of the Zoological Institute and Museum of the University of Kiel, Germany, collected some Crustacea representing three species of Decapoda Macrura; two of these belong to the family Alpheidae and one to the Callianassidae. I am most grateful to Dr. Gerlach for the privilege to study this small but interesting collection, which now is the property of the Kiel Museum; duplicate specimens are inserted in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. Family ALPHEIDAE The two species of Alpheidae were collected near Cananeia,...

The nomenclature of the Orang Utan Naturalis
Groves, C.P.; Holthuis, L.B..
Changes in the nomenclature of the Orang Utan recently proposed by Röhrer-Ertl are shown to be unnecessary. The generic name Pongo Van Wurmb, 1784, for the genus, P.s. satyrus Linnaeus, 1758, for the Sumatran subspecies, and P.s. borneensis Van Wurmb, 1784, for the Bornean subspecies, as used by Röhrer-Ertl all are invalid, and should be replaced by the correct traditional names, Pongo Lacépède, 1799, for the genus, P.p. pygmaeus (Linnaeus, 1760) for the Bornean subspecies, and P.p. abelii Lesson, 1827, for the Sumatran subspecies.

Redescription of Coutierea agassizi (Coutière, 1901) (Crustacea Decapoda, Palaemonidae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Since Coutière (1901) published the original description of his new species Coralliocaris Agassizi, no new finds of this species have been reported anymore. Recently a second specimen was collected by the University of Miami's R.V. "John Elliott Pillsbury", which makes it possible to give additional details of this peculiar species, which is so aberrant that it was made the type of a separate genus, of which it still is the only species known. Coutière's only specimen was a male and it it therefore most gratifying that the present second specimen is an ovigerous female. Unfortunately the exact locality where this second specimen was collected is not known. I am most grateful to Dr. Gilbert L. Voss, Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of...

Notes on a collection of Crustacea Decapoda from the Great Bitter Lake, Egypt, with a list of the species of Decapoda known from the Suez Canal Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Between August 18 and September 5, 1950, Dr. C. Beets, geologist Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company, explored the aquatic fauna and flora of the Great Bitter Lake. In the course of this exploration dredge hauls were made at 47 stations, distributed all over the lake. An account of this work and a description of the stations were given by Dr. Beets in a previous volume of the present journal (1953). The Decapod Crustacea collected by Dr. Beets belong to twelve species, three of which have not been reported from the Suez Canal before. Apart from these additions to our knowledge of the fauna of the Suez Canal, the present collection is of great interest because of the extensive data provided by Dr. Beets on the ecology of the localities from which the material...

Albertus Seba's „Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri...." (1734-1765) and the „Planches de Seba" (1827-1831) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION The present note is the result of an investigation into the correct date of publication of the third volume of A. Seba's great work "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri. ..". In my own studies on Crustacea I accepted the year 1761 as correct, following in this Engelmann (1846) and the title page of the copy of Seba's book that I consulted. Dr. M. Boeseman, ichthyologist of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, pointed out to me that in ichthyological literature the year of publication of this volume is practically always cited as 1758. Also Engel (1937) in his biography of Seba gave this later date. In trying to straighten this question out I obtained the most cordial help from Dr. Boeseman, Prof. Dr. H. Engel, former director of the...

The Crustacea Decapoda Macrura (the Alpheidae excepted) of Easter Island Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
So far the Crustacean fauna of Easter Island has received but very little attention. In most early narratives of expeditions visiting the island no mention is made of any Crustacean. Behrens (1908: 135) who accompanied Jacob Roggeveen on the voyage during which, in 1722, the island was discovered, stated in his diary that "No animals were met with, as far as we penetrated on this occasion, except sundry species of birds". Cornelis Bouman, captain of the ship "Tienhoven" of Roggeveen's expedition, did not mention any Crustacean from Easter Island, even though in his narrative he shows a great interest in marine life, as is clearly demonstrated by his account of the expedition's visit to Juan Fernandez (24 February to 17 March 1722) in which he repeatedly...
