Impact of relative sea level and rapid climate changes on the architecture and lithofacies of the Holocene Rhone subaqueous delta (Western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Fanget, Anne-sophie; Berne, Serge; Jouet, Gwenael; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Dennielou, Bernard; Maillet, Gregoire M.; Tondut, Mathieu.
The modern Rhone delta in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) is a typical wave-dominated delta that developed after the stabilization of relative sea level following the last deglacial sea-level rise. Similar to most other deltas worldwide, it displays several stacked parasequences and lobes that reflect the complex interaction between accommodation, sediment supply and autogenic processes on the architecture of a wave-dominated delta. The interpretation of a large set of newly acquired very high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, well constrained by 14C dates, provides a refined three-dimensional image of the detailed architecture (seismic bounding surfaces, sedimentary facies) of the Rhone subaqueous delta, and allows us to propose a...

The impact of internal waves on upper continental slopes: insights from the Mozambican margin (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Miramontes, Elda; Jouet, Gwenael; Thereau, Estelle; Bruno, Miguel; Penven, Pierrick; Guerin, Charline; Le Roy, Pascal; Droz, Laurence; Jorry, Stephan; Hernández‐molina, F. Javier; Thiéblemont, Antoine; Silva Jacinto, Ricardo; Cattaneo, Antonio.
Evidences of sedimentation affected by oceanic circulation, such as nepheloid layers and contourites are often observed along continental slopes. However, the oceanographic processes controlling sedimentation along continental margins remain poorly understood. Multibeam bathymetry and high‐resolution seismic reflection data revealed a contourite depositional system in the Mozambican upper continental slope composed of a contourite terrace (a surface with a gentle seaward slope dominated by erosion) and a plastered drift (a convex‐shape sedimentary deposit). A continuous alongslope channel and a field of sand dunes (mainly migrating upslope), formed during Holocene, were identified in the contourite terrace at the present seafloor. Seismic reflection data...

Morphological control of slope instability in contourites: a geotechnical approach ArchiMer
Miramontes, Elda; Garziglia, Sebastien; Sultan, Nabil; Jouet, Gwenael; Cattaneo, Antonio.
Contourite drifts are sediment bodies formed by the action of bottom currents. They are common features found on continental slopes and are often affected by slope failure. However, processes controlling slope instability in contourite depositional systems are still not well constrained, and it is not clear whether contourites have particular properties that make them more susceptible to slope failure. In this study, we compare sedimentological and geotechnical properties of contouritic and hemipelagic sediments within the Corsica Trough (northern Tyrrhenian Sea) using geophysical data sets and sediment cores in order to get a better understanding of the controlling factors of slope stability. Geomorphological and slope stability analyses reveal that...

Post-glacial persistence of turbiditic activity within the Rhone deep-sea turbidite system (Gulf of Lions, Western Mediterranean): Linking the outer shelf and the basin sedimentary records ArchiMer
Dennielou, Bernard; Jallet, Laurent; Sultan, Nabil; Jouet, Gwenael; Giresse, Pierre; Voisset, Michel; Berne, Serge.
Emplacement of post-glacial turbidites is commonly controlled by rapid changes in sea level or by seismicity. On the continental rise of the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean), an aseismic area, we identified turbiditic beds deposited during the rising stage and highstand of sea level. Swath bathymetry, sediment cores, in situ Cone Penetrating Tests (CPTU), heavy mineral associations and radiocarbon dating determined the source, composition, distribution and age of the turbiditic beds. Turbidites are composed of homogeneous to positively graded silts to medium sand with quartz (up to 90%), shell debris and shelfal benthic faunas. Their distribution on the sea floor is very patchy and controlled by abundant inherited erosional bedforms. Their source is...

125000 ans d'enregistrements récifaux des stagnations du niveau de la mer dans l'Océan Indien (Archipel des Glorieuses) ArchiMer
Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Le Roy, Pascal; Prat, Sophie; Camoin, Gilbert; Vella, Claude; Caline, Bruno.
Control factors of Holocene sedimentary infilling in a semi-closed tidal estuarine-like system: the bay of Brest (France) ArchiMer
Gregoire, Gwendoline; Le Roy, Pascal; Ehrhold, Axel; Jouet, Gwenael; Garlan, Thierry.
This study details the sedimentary infilling of an original tidal-dominated estuary system during the final stage of the last marine transgression. The Bay of Brest is confined and connects the rivers Elorn and Aulne, to the sea of Iroise by a narrow strait encasing a well preserved paleo-channel. The compilation of high- and very-high-resolution bathymetric and seismic data, constrained by sediments datations, allows us to classify the paleo-morphology of the bay into three stepped domains: the paleo-valley floor surrounded by fluvial terraces, the central plateau, and the shallow embayments. Taking into account the main factors controlling the infilling, including sea-level rise, substratum morphology, and hydrodynamics, the stratigraphic scheme of the...

External controls on turbidite sedimentation on the glacially-influenced Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay, western European margin) ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Zaragosi, Sebastien; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Cremer, Michel.
Sequence stratigraphic models predict increased sediment delivery to deep-water areas during sea-level lowstand. The Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay, western European margin) is an interesting area to test this hypothesis because the margin has a wide continental shelf, still partly flooded during sea-level lowstand, and the Armorican turbidite system has experienced fluctuating sediment fluxes since the last glacial period. The stratigraphic response of the Armorican turbidite system to sea-level oscillations and climate changes was assessed for the last 35,000 years through the study of the Guilcher, Crozon and Audierne levees. Millenial-timescale resolution chronostratigraphy allowed us to reconstruct the sediment accumulation and turbidite frequency,...

Levantine intermediate water hydrodynamic and bottom water ventilation in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea over the past 56,000 years: New insights from benthic foraminifera and ostracods ArchiMer
Minto'O, Charlie Morelle Angue; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Morigi, Caterina; Ducassou, Emmanuelle; Toucanne, Samuel; Jouet, Gwenael; Mulder, Thierry.
Foraminifera and ostracods have been quantitatively studied in core MD01-2472, from the upper continental slope (at water depth of 501 m), to evaluate their relationship with bottom water condition variability and decipher the control of the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) current on benthic faunas. The occurrence of reworked ostracod species (originating from the continental shelf) and, the presence of shallow water Elphidium/Ammonia benthic foraminifera are used to estimate the degree of along-slope transport at the core site. This has revealed two intervals of along-slope transport also associated with coarse-grained contourite deposits, deposited during the YD and HS2 episodes. Planktonic-benthic foraminiferal and ostracod assemblages reflect...

Investigation of a possible submarine landslide at the Var delta front (Nice continental slope, southeast France) ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Savoye, Bruno; Jouet, Gwenael; Leynaud, Didier; Cochonat, Pierre; Henry, P.; Stegmann, Sylvia; Kopf, Achim.
The Var prodelta progrades across a straight, narrow shelf (less than 2 km wide) with a very steep continental slope reaching locally more than 30 degrees. Historically, the Var delta front is sadly famous for the 1979 catastrophic submarine landslide that resulted in several casualties and infrastructural damage. Geotechnical and geophysical investigations carried out in late 2007 to the east of the 1979 landslide scar provide evidence for the possible occurrence of a new important sedimentary collapse and submarine landslide. Geophysical data acquired in the area show the presence of several seafloor morphological steps rooted to shallow subsurface seismic reflections. Moreover, in situ piezocone measurements demonstrate the presence of several shear...

La distribution des assemblages d’ostracodes et de foraminifères benthiques le long des derniers 550 ka dans le bassin Est-Corse, Méditerranée occidentale : une reconstitution paléo-environnementale ArchiMer
Angue Minto’o, Charlie Morelle; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Toucanne, Samuel; Jouet, Gwenael.
The study of Quaternary sediments covering the last 550 kyr from the borehole GDEC-4-2, East-Corsica basin, was performed through the study of benthic meiofaunal assemblages (ostracoda and benthic foraminifera) whose distribution responds to climate changes, and glacial–interglacial variability in particular. The interglacial ostracod group is mainly composed of the Argilloecia acuminata, Cytheropteron alatum, Henryhowella sp., Polycope sp. and Cytherella sp., which indicate an enhanced surface productivity and possibly high bottom water temperature during these warm intervals. Benthic foraminifera, such as Hoeglundina elegans, Sigmoilopsis schlumbergeri, Bigenerina nodosaria and Hyalinea balthica are predominant during interglacial periods and also show...

Subseafloor stratigraphic profiling and soil classification from piezocone tests: A case study in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Lafuerza, S.; Frigola, J.; Canals, M.; Jouet, Gwenael; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Sultan, Nabil; Berne, Serge.
We show the results provided by piezocone tests in determining the stratigraphic profile and the soil classification of two drilling sites in the outer shelf and the upper slope of the Gulf of Lion, PRGL2 and PRGL1, respectively. Correlations with grain-size data indicate that sleeve friction can be used for profiling fine-grained sediments (site PRGL1), whereas cone tip resistance is the most adequate for sequences made of alternations of coarse- and fine-grained intervals (site PRGL2). Normalized cone resistance and friction ratio proved to be also appropriate for soil stratigraphy as it depicts trends in the coarse fraction of the tested soil. Silts and clays present in similar proportions at site PRGL1 responded to piezocone testing as pure clays...

A Late Quaternary record of highstand shedding from an isolated carbonate platform (Juan de Nova, southern Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Counts, John; Jorry, Stephan; Vazquez Riveiros, Natalia; Jouet, Gwenael; Giraudeau, Jacques; Cheron, Sandrine; Boissier, Audrey; Miramontes, Elda.
A 27 m core collected on the seafloor near Juan de Nova island at 1909 m depth in the SW Indian Ocean preserves a high‐resolution record of carbonate sediment export to the deep sea over the past 1 Myr. Core chronology was established using calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and benthic foraminiferal δ18O. Throughout the core, preserved highstand intervals (MIS 1, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23 and 25) are marked by an increase in the aragonite content within the sediment. Aragonite is likely sourced from the nearby Juan de Nova carbonate platform ~10 km to the south, and is interpreted to result from flooding of the platform top. Platform inundation allows carbonate muds to be winnowed from their original shallow‐water environment of deposition, suspended in...

Shoreface migrations at the shelf edge and sea-level changes around the Last Glacial Maximum (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Jouet, Gwenael; Berne, Serge; Rabineau, Marina; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Bernier, P.; Dennielou, Bernard; Sierro, F.j.; Flores, J.a.; Taviani, M..
The Bourcart–Hérault canyon interfluve in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) was the site of very high sedimentation (up to 2.5 m/kyr) around the Last Glacial Maximum, due to the vicinity of major fluvial systems that fed the shelf edge. Shoreface deposits and offshore muds deposited during each glacial/interglacial 100 kyr-cycle, created a repeated motif with high-angle and low-angle clinoforms on seismic profiles. New detailed morphological, sedimentological and paleo-environmental data, constrained by 14C dating, allow us to propose a scenario for the evolution of this critical area between 46 and 15 cal. kyr BP. The major seismic sequence (S5), formed as a forced regression during the overall sea-level fall between MIS-3 and MIS-2, can be sub-divided...

The offshore east african rift system: new insights from the sakalaves seamounts (Davie Ridge, SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Courgeon, Simon; Bachelery, Patrick; Jouet, Gwenael; Jorry, Stephan; Bou, Esther; Boudagher-fadel, Marcelle K.; Revillon, Sidonie; Camoin, Gilbert; Poli, Emmanuelle.
The offshore branch of the East African Rift System (EARS) has developed during late Cenozoic time along the eastern Africa continental margin. While Neogene–Pleistocene extensional tectonic deformation has been evidenced along the northern segment of the Davie Ridge, the spatial extent of deformation further south remains poorly documented. Based on recent and various oceanographic data sets (bathymetric surveys, dredge samples and seismic profiles), our study highlights active normal faulting, modern east–west extensional tectonic deformation and Late Cenozoic alkaline volcanism at the Sakalaves Seamounts (18°S, Davie Ridge) that seem tightly linked to the offshore EARS development. In parallel, rift‐related tectonic subsidence appears responsible for...

Late Pleistocene evolution of the mixed siliciclastic and carbonate southwestern New Caledonia continental shelf/lagoon ArchiMer
Le Roy, Pascal; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Ehrhold, Axel; Michel, Guillaume; Gautier, Valentin; Guerin, Charline.
The main island of New Caledonia (NC) is surrounded by the second largest barrier reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef. The Upper Pleistocene evolution of this barrier reef–lagoon complex offers the opportunity to examine the response of a modern mixed tropical siliciclastic/carbonate system to relative sea-level changes and to better constrain the relative role of lagoon backfilling and paleo-drainage system in sediment transfer across the shelf. This paper mainly focuses on the results of chronostratigraphic and sedimentological interpretations of new seismic, bathymetric and coring data collected in the SW NC lagoon. Several significant points are highlighted from this study and allow the construction of a refined model which...

Paleo-depths reconstruction of the last 550,000 years based on the transfer function on recent and Quaternary benthic foraminifers of the East Corsica margin ArchiMer
Minto'O, Charlie Morelle Angue; Silva Jacinto, Ricardo; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Jouet, Gwenael.
In this study, the model H(i) = 109.6103 + C1 × F1(i) + C2 × F2(i) + … + C33 × F33(i) obtained from depth modelling based on 33 recent benthic foraminifer species distribution, has been applied to the fossil benthic foraminifers from the borehole GDEC-4-2 drilled at a water depth of 491 m, in the East-Corsica basin, covering the last 550,000 years. The obtained variations of the paleo-depths show a medium correlation with the oscillations of the relative sea level and also with the fluctuations of the oxygen isotopic ratio (δ18O G. bulloides and δ18O C. pachyderma–C. wuellerstorfi). This newly developed transfer function is accompanied by an error margin of ± 86 m, suggesting that this model will probably be more suitable for a time scale of the order of a...

Sortable silt particle-size data and stable isotope analyses from the Corsica Trough, western Mediterranean Sea, provide a continuous palaeoceanographic record of the inflow, ventilation and vertical fluctuations of the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea for the last 130,000 years. The results presented herein reveal that climate changes drive the Mediterranean intermediate circulation on Milankovitch to millennial time-scales. Intensified intermediate inflow and ventilation in the Corsica Trough occurred throughout the last glacial interval, with a cold / faster – warm / slower pattern existing between the Dansgaard-Oeschger climatic oscillations (including Heinrich events) and the LIW variability. Modern sediments and Pleistocene reefs from isolated carbonate platforms (Iles Eparses, SW Indian Ocean): A preliminary study ArchiMer

Isolated carbonate platforms occur throughout the geologic record, from Archean to present. Although the respective roles of tectonics, sediment supply and sea-level changes in the stratigraphical architecture of these systems are relatively well constrained, the details of the nature and controls on the variability of sedimentological patterns between and within individual geomorphologic units on platforms have been barely investigated. This study aims at describing and comparing geomorphological and sedimentological features of surficial sediments and fossil reefs from three isolated carbonate platforms located in the SW Indian Ocean (Glorieuses, Juan de Nova and Europa). These carbonate platforms are relatively small and lack continuous reef margins,...

Altered volcanic deposits as basal failure surfaces of submarine landslides ArchiMer
Miramontes, Elda; Sultan, Nabil; Garziglia, Sebastien; Jouet, Gwenael; Pelleter, Ewan; Cattaneo, Antonio.
One of the main concerns regarding the development of submarine landslides is the role played by weak layers in the failure process and, in particular, their impact in terms of volume, shape, and evolution of mass movements. In the present study we identified a weak layer in the eastern margin of the Corsica Trough (northern Tyrrhenian Sea) that formed the basal failure surface of the Pianosa Slump at 42–50 ka. This layer is characterized by high water content, high plasticity, high compressibility, and post-peak strain softening behavior (i.e., strength loss with increasing strain). These specific mechanical and sedimentological properties seem to be related to the presence of analcime zeolites with a concentration of 2–4% in the muddy sediment. Zeolites...

Earth's climate oscillated during the Late Quaternary following the major glacial-interglacial cycles. These well-known variations influenced continental and marine sedimentary records worldwide. However, the associated changes of global sea-level and of environmental factors are not precisely documented, neither are their stratigraphic signatures. The extensive geophysical and sedimentological investigations carried out in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean) since the early 90's allow us to explore the expanded sedimentary records preserved on this continental margin during the Late Quaternary. The combination of high sediment supply (largely from Alpine glaciers) and significant subsidence favoured an almost continuous record, at the shelf edge, of...
