Association between G316A growth hormone polymorphism and economic traits in pigs Genet. Mol. Biol.
Faria,Danielle Assis de; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Pires,Aldrin Vieira; Paiva,Samuel Rezende; Sollero,Bruna Pena; Wenceslau,Amauri Arias.
The association between G316A growth hormone polymorphism and quantitative traits was investigated in an F2 population of pigs. Association analyses were performed using a statistical model that included genotype, sex, batch and sex by genotype interaction as fixed effects and sire as random effect. The polymorphism was associated with the number of right teats (p = 0.03), heart weight (p = 0.04), lung weight (p = 0.05), carcass length determined by the Brazilian carcass classification method (p = 0.04), picnic shoulder weight (p = 0.07), jowl weight (p = 0.01), pH 24 h after slaughtering (p = 0.03) and drip loss (p = 0.01). Interaction between genotype and sex was observed for six performance traits. The additive effect was significant (p < 0.10) for...

Mapping of quantitative trait loci and confirmation of the FAT1 region on chromosome 4 in an F2 population of pigs Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Kleibe de Moraes; Paixão,Débora Martins; Silva,Priscila Vendramini; Solero,Bruna Pena; Pereira,Mario Sérgio; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni.
The objective was to map QTL on porcine chromosome 4 and to associate them with carcass and internal organ traits in an F2 population. The F1 population was produced by outbreed crossing, using two native Brazilian breed Piau boars and 18 commercial sows. A total of 617 F2 animals issued from 11 F1 boars and 54 F1 sows were typed for a total of five microsatellite markers. The data were analyzed by multiple regressions developed for the analysis of crosses between outbred lines, using the QTL Express software. Significant evidence for QTL was found for pig chromosome 4 regarding carcass and internal organ traits. All QTL were detected in the same region of the chromosome, designated FAT1.

The influence of animals from embryo transfer on the genetic evaluation of growth in Simmental beef cattle by using multi-trait models Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mota,Rodrigo Reis; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Marques,Luiz Fernando Aarão; Silva,Luciano Pinheiro da; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Torres,Robledo de Almeida.
The weight records from Simmental beef cattle were used in a genetic evaluation of growth with or without the inclusion of animals obtained by embryo transfer. A multi-trait model in which embryo transfer individuals were excluded (MTM1) contained 29,510 records from 10,659 animals, while another model without exclusion of these animals (MTM2) contained 62,895 weight records from 23,160 animals. The weight records were adjusted for ages of 100, 205, 365, 450, 550 and 730 days. The (co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method. The (co)variance components were similar in both models, except for maternal permanent environment variance. Direct heritabilities (h²d) in MTM1 were 0.04, 0.11, 0.20, 0.27,...

Genomic growth curves of an outbred pig population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Resende,Marcos Deon V. de; Rocha,Gilson Silvério; Duarte,Darlene Ana S.; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Brustolini,Otávio J.B.; Thus,Sander; Viana,José Marcelo S.; Guimarães,Simone E.F..
In the current post-genomic era, the genetic basis of pig growth can be understood by assessing SNP marker effects and genomic breeding values (GEBV) based on estimates of these growth curve parameters as phenotypes. Although various statistical methods, such as random regression (RR-BLUP) and Bayesian LASSO (BL), have been applied to genomic selection (GS), none of these has yet been used in a growth curve approach. In this work, we compared the accuracies of RR-BLUP and BL using empirical weight-age data from an outbred F2 (Brazilian Piau X commercial) population. The phenotypes were determined by parameter estimates using a nonlinear logistic regression model and the halothane gene was considered as a marker for evaluating the assumptions of the GS...

Genetic evaluation for persistency of lactation in Holstein cows using a random regression model Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Costa,Claudio Napolis; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Pereira,Carmen Silva.
A model for analyzing test day records including both fixed and random coefficients was applied to the genetic evaluation of first lactation data for Holstein cows. Data comprising 87045 test-day milk yield records from calving between 1997 and 2001 from Holstein herds in 10 regions of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Six persistency of lactation measures were evaluated using breeding values obtained by random regression analyses. The Wilmink function was used to model the additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. Residual variance was constant throughout lactation. Ranking for animals did not change among criteria for persistency measurements, but ranking changes were observed when the estimated breeding value (EBV) for persistency of...

Expression profile of genes associated with mastitis in dairy cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fonseca,Isabela; Silva,Priscila Vendramini; Lange,Carla Christine; Guimarães,Marta F.M.; Weller,Mayara Morena Del Cambre Amaral; Sousa,Katiene Régia Silva; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Guimarães,José Domingos; Guimarães,Simone E.F..
In order to characterize the expression of genes associated with immune response mechanisms to mastitis, we quantified the relative expression of the IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IFN-γ and TNF-α genes in milk cells of healthy cows and cows with clinical mastitis. Total RNA was extracted from milk cells of six Black and White Holstein (BW) cows and six Gyr cows, including three animals with and three without mastitis per breed. Gene expression was analyzed by real-time PCR. IL-10 gene expression was higher in the group of BW and Gyr cows with mastitis compared to animals free of infection from both breeds (p < 0.05). It was also higher in BW Holstein animals with clinical mastitis (p < 0.001), but it was not significant when Gyr cows with and...

Maternal effects on the genetic evaluation of Tabapuã beef cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Campêlo,José Elivalto Guimarães; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Silva,Luiz Otávio Campos da; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Araújo,Cláudio Vieira de; Pereira,Carmen Silva.
The aim of this investigation was to study the influence of maternal effects on the genetic evaluation of sire production in Tabapuã beef cattle. Single and multiple trait analyses were done with adjusted animal weights at 120, 240 and 420 days of age. Antagonism was observed between additive direct and maternal genetic effects, with the maternal effect being higher until weaning. The inclusion of maternal effects in the models removed part of the additive variance only in single trait analyses and resulted in smaller means and standard deviations for the sire breeding values. The use of maternal effect associated with single or multiple traits may affect sire ranking. The contradictory results of the single and multiple trait analyses for additive direct...

Genetic diversity between herds of Alpine and Saanen dairy goats and the naturalized Brazilian Moxotó breed Genet. Mol. Biol.
Araújo,Adriana Mello de; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Machado,Thea Mírian Medeiros; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Pereira,Carmen Silva; Silva,Francisco Luiz Ribeiro da; Rodrigues,Marcelo Teixeira; Columbiano,Virgínia de Souza; Fonseca,Cleusa Graça da.
Brazilian naturalized goat breeds are adapted to the semiarid conditions prevalent in the Northeast region of the country (which has the largest Brazilian goat heard) and represent an as yet uninvestigated source of genetic diversity. Currently, imported goat breeds are crossed with Brazilian naturalized goat breeds, endangering the genetic potential of the naturalized breeds. We used 11 microsatellite markers to determine the genetic diversity among imported (non-naturalized) dairy Alpine and Saanen goats and naturalized Brazilian Moxotó goats. We genotyped 292 goats from three herds (one private, one from the University of Minas Gerais and the Moxotó conservation herd from Embrapa Caprinos) and found that the general heterozygosity was 0.6952 for Alpine,...

Estimation of genetic parameters for test-day milk yield in Holstein cows using a random regression model Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Costa,Claudio Napolis; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Pereira,Carmen Silva.
Test-day milk yield records of 11,023 first-parity Holstein cows were used to estimate genetic parameters for milk yield during different lactation periods. (Co)variance components were estimated using two random regression models, RRM1 and RRM2, and the restricted maximum likelihood method, compared by the likelihood ratio test. Additive genetic variances determined by RRM1 and additive genetic and permanent environmental variances estimated by RRM2 were described, using the Wilmink function. Residual variance was constant throughout lactation for the two models. The heritability estimates obtained by RRM1 (0.34 to 0.56) were higher than those obtained by RRM2 (0.15 to 0.31). Due to the high heritability estimates for milk yield throughout lactation and...

Genetic trends in the performance and reproductive traits of pigs Genet. Mol. Biol.
Torres Filho,Rodolpho de Almeida; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Pereira,Carmen Silva; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Araújo,Cláudio Vieira de; Silva,Martinho de Almeida e.
The selection and evaluation of breeds and purebred lines to be used as the parental stock is an important step for the success of any animal breeding program. In this study, the feed:gain ratio, backfat thickness corrected for 100 kg, age to 100 kg, average daily gain, and age of sow at first farrowing were used to evaluate the genetic trends for direct and maternal additive genetic values in Large White pigs. The total number of piglets born or born alive and the litter weight at birth were used as indicators of the genetic trends for the direct additive values. The genetic trends were calculated by regression of the average predicted genetic values per year for each trait versus the offspring's year of birth (for performance traits) or versus the dam...

We studied the phenotypic effects of polymorphisms at the MYF5 gene in a divergent F2 swine population and found that one polymorphism was due to an insertion and another to a deletion. The genotypes of 359 F2 animals were obtained and the Normal/Normal (NN) and Normal/Insertion (NI) genotypes analyzed to determine associations with phenotypic data for performance, carcass and meat quality traits. Significant differences were observed (p < 0.05) between NN and NI animals for drip (NN = 3.14 ± 1.56; NI = 3.69 ± 2.78%), cooking (NN = 32.26 ± 2.41; NI = 33.21 ± 2.31%) and total loss (NN = 34.16 ± 2.63 and NI = 34.97 ± 2.08%). The Deletion marker was not statistically tested. The results indicate that the allelic variant Insertion is associated with a...

Use of regularized quantile regression to predict the genetic merit of pigs for asymmetric carcass traits PAB
Santos,Patricia Mendes dos; Nascimento,Ana Carolina Campana; Nascimento,Moysés; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Azevedo,Camila Ferreira; Mota,Rodrigo Reis; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Lopes,Paulo Sávio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of regularized quantile regression (RQR) to predict the genetic merit of pigs for asymmetric carcass traits, compared with the Bayesian lasso (Blasso) method. The genetic data of the traits carcass yield, bacon thickness, and backfat thickness from a F2 population composed of 345 individuals, generated by crossing animals from the Piau breed with those of a commercial breed, were used. RQR was evaluated considering different quantiles (τ = 0.05 to 0.95). The RQR model used to estimate the genetic merit showed accuracies higher than or equal to those obtained by Blasso, for all studies traits. There was an increase of 6.7 and 20.0% in accuracy when the quantiles 0.15 and 0.45 were considered in...

Análise bayesiana univariada e bivariada para a conversão alimentar de suínos da raça Piau PAB
Rossi,Robson Marcelo; Martins,Elias Nunes; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e.

Pinheiro,Valeria Rosado; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Azevedo,Camila Ferreira.
