Recirculation is it viable ? Is it insurable ? ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
Recirculation techniques in aquaculture exist and are applied at an industrial scale in sea-bass, sea-bream and turbot rearing for sho rt (incubation, larval rearing, weaning) or long (broodstock) rearing phases whatever the biomass. Experiments are carried out by IFREMER in partnership with producers and equipment makers to develop super intensive fish production in closed system. From the economic viewpoint, recirculation makes it possible to reduce fingerling production cost while it is still unknown in the case of ongrowing. From the insurance viewpoint, recirculation will make risk appraisal and risk m anagement easier. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Lacroix, Denis; Paquotte, Philippe.

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Paquotte, Philippe.

An analysis of seafood consumption survey methods in France. ArchiMer
Girard, Sophie; Mariojouls, Catherine; Paquotte, Philippe; Wisner-bourgeois, Claude.
(Not controled OCR) The different statistical data sources available for seafood I consumption analysis in France belong to three types : the apparent consumption estimated on the basis of a balance between production and trade, used at national scale and for international comparison, the data in value published by the national Institute for economic statistics, aggregating food balance sheet, and economic results of inquiries about the activities of the branch industries, and the household consumption estimated through consumers' panels. A critical and historical analysis of the different available data series is presented, with focus on the major difficulties when interpreting and cross-checking the data (series breaking-nomenclature items, range of...

Dao, Jean-claude; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Paquotte, Philippe.
The article is an excerpt from a focus document for understand scallop aquafarming's position. Studies on this species are part of IFREMER/DRV research programmes as an aquafarming as well as a halieutic resource. They are currently becoming reality through significant support for fishing management but also through experiments of semis of juveniles at various English Channel and Atlantic sites, to cite only the most applied operations. Fishing and shellfish farming professionals are closely associated with this programme. Scallop fishing occupies a prominent position this year in the press by reason of fishing and marketing problems due to intake being much higher than in past years. The situation matches the forecasts of IFREMER teams that have been...

Production costs in french scallop farming ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.
(Not controled OCR) The French King scallop farming method (hatchery, intermediate culture in cages nnd sea-bed extensive ongrowing) has been developed since 1983. A multi-steps project analysis has been carried out to estimate the economic feasability of the rearing activity. Because there is no market for spat in France at the moment, the project concerns the whole production cycle from hatchery to harvest. The project is designed to supply 150 m.t. of maketable scallops, which is the expected French farmed production in the near future. The project analysis software developed by IFREMER provides the main financial criteria, i.e. internal rate of return, potential earning power, cash requirements and a breakdown of the production costs. The first...

II. Les marchés des Pectinides. ArchiMer
Dao, Jean-claude; Paquotte, Philippe.

The experience of offshore marine fish farming in France ArchiMer
De La Pomelie, C; Paquotte, Philippe.
A natural endowment of three coast lines with different structures, of numerous rivers coming from mountainous regions and of different climatic conditions has enabled France to develop one of the first European aquaculture sectors in terms of volume with almost 300 000 tonnes in 1996. This development has been based on a wide range of species and on a wide range of techniques. Intensive marine fish farming has been developing during the last decade only, after many years of stagnation due to the lack of reliable technology for species adapted to French climate. Techniques of production are very diverse. Although earth ponds and race-ways are used only by 25% of the marine fish farms, this technique accounts for 40% of the production. On the contrary, many...

Mediterranean marine aquaculture sector. Present state of development and perspectives on cooperation ArchiMer
Bakela, Z; Paquotte, Philippe.
Due to good natural conditions and political will, marine aquaculture has developed recently around the Mediterranean sea and particularly in the non European Mediterranean countries. Both private entrepreneurship and public international cooperation have participated in this development. Most of its products are aiming at supplying European markets, where they compete not only with similar products from the European Mediterranean countries but also with other aquaculture products from the northern European countries. Advantages and constraints of aquaculture in the Mediterranean countries are analysed with regard to the project of "Euro-Mediterranean partnership" which should give birth within 25 years to a large free trade area. In order to develop a...

Ferlin, Philippe; Michel, Alain; Paquotte, Philippe.
On a global scale, aquaculture produced around 17 million tonnes in 1991, compared with 11 million tonnes in 1985 and 6 million tonnes in 1975. Since the beginning of the 80s, this production increased by an average of 7.5% per year in volume, and more than 13% in value. This amount represents only 17 tonnes of the global volume of sea and fresh water products, but more than 25% of its value. On a worldwide scale, water products account for an important part of the animal product supply in human food. For example, aquaculture accounts for a larger part than ovine production and represents around 5% of the world's animal protein supply. Aquaculture is an activity that is still booming from a technological development point of view and should be one of the...

Les développements récents en conchyliculture ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.

Paquotte, Philippe.
In spite of its young age, aquaculture is now an activity subject to competition just like any other activity in the agri-food sector. The differences in environmental conditions give comparative advantages to operations located in certain sites, but the intensification of production methods tends to reduce the impact of this natural variation. It is for this reason that aquaculture must seek sources of competitiveness in the quality of its products, which is not limited to just freshness or taste and includes meeting the increasing demand for diversity. A quality process requires knowing how to assess modifications in product characteristics with respect to environmental conditions and culture techniques and should allow producers and consumers to clearly...

Paquotte, Philippe; Moriceau, Jacques.
A monitoring of the growth and condition index of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis has been conducted in the Thau Lagoon and in open sea off the Cap d'Agde. Between April and November, its growth is greater in open sea than in the lagoon. In winter, the growth doesn't stop in open sea, but one needs to get away from mussel collection in practicing seabed farming. In these conditions, the oyster's growth, throughout the year, is very close in open sea and in lagoons whereas the condition index is higher in open sea.

Aquaculture : activité économique déconcentrée ou intégrée ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.

Organisation of the production in aquaculture : a comparison between eastern Europe and western Europe ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
For Eastern European countries which have limited coastlines or have not access any more to foreign fishing zones in Africa or Asia, aquaculture is a major issue in aquatic products supply. Following the political and economic transformations which have occurred since 1989, the fish farming production has been decreasing in most of countries of the former Eastern bloc. Meanwhile, many enterprises have been restructured and new forms of organisation production have appeared. The transition from State-owned status to private entrepreneurship is not realised at the same pace in all the countries, but is a general trend. Not only the producers have to adjust to this new economic context, but they have to shift from production-driven to market-driven behaviour....
