Using the ALADYM simulation model for exploring the effects of management scenarios on fish population metrics ArchiMer
Spedicato, Maria Teresa; Poulard, Jean-charles; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Radtke, Krzysztof; Lembo, Giuseppe; Petitgas, Pierre.
Simulation of fisheries systems is a widely used approach that integrates monitoring and assessment tools. We applied the ALADYM (age-length based dynamic model) simulation model to three different studies aimed at investigating correlations between pressure and population metrics, exploring the viability of different mortality levels in long-term scenarios and predicting the effects of combined management measures. Uncertainty was incorporated into the simulations following the Monte Carlo paradigm. Three stocks were used for these exercises: red mullet in the central-southern Tyrrhenian Sea and European hake in both the Bay of Biscay and the Aegean Sea. The analysis of the relationships between total mortality and indicators highlighted significant...

The dragonet Callionymus lyra, a target species used for evaluation of biological effects of chemical contaminants on French coasts ArchiMer
Burgeot, Thierry; Bocquene, Gilles; Truquet, Philippe; Le Dean, Loic; Poulard, Jean-charles; Dorel, Didier; Souplet, Arnauld; Galgani, Francois.
An oceanographic cruise in 1991 along the English Channel and Atlantic coasts of France indicated the value of dragonet Callionymus lyra Linnaeus, 1758 as a target species for monitoring biological effects. Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase measurements in this species provided a first assessment of the effects of hydrocarbons (PCB, PAH, dioxins) on the marine environment. The specific behavior of dragonet was defined by biochemical characterization. Biological data were obtained during 3 additional oceanographic cruises to study changes in the abundance and distribution of the species in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. This first assessment, carried out in the context of the National Observation Network, indicated that pollutants do not have...

Combining indicator trends to assess ongoing changes in exploited fish communities: diagnostic of communities off the coasts of France ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena; Bellail, Robert; Coppin, Franck; Le Pape, Olivier; Mahe, Jean-claude; Morin, Jocelyne; Poulard, Jean-charles; Schlaich, Ivan; Souplet, Arnauld; Verin, Yves; Bertrand, Jacques.
We present a method for combining individual indicator results into a comprehensive diagnostic of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities. A conceptual framework for interpreting combined trends in a set of simple indicators is proposed, relying beforehand on qualitative expectations anchored in ecological theory. The initial state of the community is first assessed using published information. Which combinations of trends are acceptable or undesirable is decided, depending on the initial status. The indicators are then calculated from a time-series and their time trends are estimated as the slopes of linear models. Finally, the test results are combined within the predefined framework, providing a diagnostic on the dynamics of fishing impacts...

The apparent disappearance of Loligo forbesi from the south of its range in the 1990s: Trends in Loligo spp. abundance in the northeast Atlantic and possible environmental influences ArchiMer
Chen, C; Pierce, G; Wang, J; Robin, J; Poulard, Jean-charles; Pereira, J; Zuur, A; Boyle, P; Bailey, N; Beare, D; Jereb, P; Ragonese, S; Mannini, A; Orsi-relini, L.
Since the early 1990s, Loligoforbesi has apparently disappeared from much of the southern part of its former range, with catches off the Iberian Peninsula, for example, declining dramatically during the 1990s. The present paper assembles data from fishery and research cruise databases to examine the evidence for a shift in distribution, examine the relationship between abundance of this species and that of the partially sympatric Loligo vulgaris, and identify possible environmental correlates. Time-series of abundance of L. forbesi and L. vulgaris were assembled using fishery and survey data from Scotland, France, and Portugal. Based on availability of data and timing of the main fishery, data for autumn (October-December) were selected. Nine squid series...

Minet, Jean-pierre; Poulard, Jean-charles.
This cruise of the "Cryos» enabled us, based on our observations on the biology of the cod stocks, the thermic environment and the catches, to explain the situation of the fishery in the gulf of the Saint-Laurent and on the southern banks of Newfoundland, from January to March 1973. Our best catches were made in the Banquereau area and especially in the gulf of the Saint-Laurent. Unfortunately, the fleet of the Grande Pêche has not cruised much around the Banquereau area in the past years, and the very low quotas set in June 1972 by the ICNAF (International Commission of the North-Western Atlantic Fisheries) in this area (4 Vs) do not allow any further development. On the contrary, the catches of the metropolitan trawlers in the gulf of the Saint-Laurent,...

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. [...] After a series of "Understanding keys" aimed at helping the reader understand the methodology and...

Leaute, Jean-pierre; Poulard, Jean-charles; Forest, Andre.

Do survey design and wind conditions influence survey indices ? ArchiMer
Poulard, Jean-charles; Trenkel, Verena.
Survey indices play an important role in stock assessments as they provide information on stock trends. In certain cases large interannual variations have been observed which are unlikely to reflect true underlying stock changes but are rather outliers. When survey indices for several species appear to be outliers for the same year, the suspicion is raised that something happened during the survey of that year. This is called a year-effect in survey catches. To study the potential year-effect in survey catches for the French autumn groundfish survey taking place in the Bay of Biscay, several indicators for survey design and wind conditions were derived as explanatory variables and Principal Component Analysis was used to study the relationship between...

Changes in occurrence and abundance of northern/southern flatfishes over a 20-year period in a coastal nursery area (Bay of Vilaine) and on the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Desaunay, Yves; Guerault, Daniel; Le Pape, Olivier; Poulard, Jean-charles.
Several works have demonstrated trends in the distribution of fish species relative to global warming. This study investigated whether similar trends have occurred for selected flatfish species on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. These species were used as indicators and changes in their Populations were studied in a coastal nursery ground, where flatfish juveniles are concentrated as well as on the entire shelf. Previous studies analysing changes in sea surface temperature for the continental shelf indicate that winter warming occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. Sixteen autumn cruises conducted since 1981 in the Bay of Vilaine nursery area and I I autumn cruises since 1987 over the entire shelf provided data on a nearly annual basis for the...

Bilan 2004 – Edition 2009 ArchiMer

Since about twenty years, Ifremer have carried out fishery surveys along the French coasts. A dynamic indicator-based approach to the assessment of multi-stock fisheries has been applied to these data series. Reference points for non-commercial populations and community indicators are seldom available, but reference directions are well established: it is known whether fishing will increase or decrease the indicator, hence the direction that should be avoided. A set of simple indicators of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities were estimated from time-series data provided by scientific surveys (population abundance and average length, community total biomass and number, average length and weight, and size spectrum). Trends in these indicators...

Impact of warming on abundance and occurrence of flatfish populations in the Bay of Biscay (France) ArchiMer
Hermant, Marie; Lobry, Jeremy; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Poulard, Jean-charles; Le Pape, Olivier.
The aim of the present study was to analyse the influence of warming on flatfish populations in the Bay of Biscay. 17 autumn cruises conducted from 1987 to 2006 over the whole shelf of the Bay of Biscay provided data for the abundance and occurrence of adults for twenty flatfish species. Trends in flatfish abundance were analysed with regard to geographic range of populations and interannual fluctuations in abundance were related to seawater temperature. Results showed significant trends in abundance and occurrence for 55% of the flatfish species in the Bay of Biscay. The response to warming of seawater was correlated to geographic ranges of species. While the abundance of the northern temperate species decreased, that of southern ones increased. Moreover,...

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

Interaction between marine populations and fishing activities: temporal patterns of landings of La Rochelle trawlers in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Poulard, Jean-charles; Leaute, Jean-pierre.
Marine populations are distributed heterogeneously in space and time because of the diversity of habitats and the requirements of species life cycles. Human exploitation of these resources also varies as a function of space, time and the type of fishing activities performed. These three factors determine fishing strategy at different levels of integration. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse, with respect to different time scales, the relations between the modalities of resource exploitation and the biological or demographic characteristics of the species involved. These investigations relate to the more general task of acquiring the basic knowledge needed for spatialised management of fishing effort. A fleet of trawlers from La Rochelle,...

Indices for capturing spatial patterns and their evolution in time, with application to European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Woillez, M; Poulard, Jean-charles; Rivoirard, Jacques; Petitgas, Pierre; Bez, Nicolas.
A series of candidate statistical indices is used in an attempt to capture spatial patterns of fish populations from research survey data. To handle diffuse population limits, indices are designed not to depend on arbitrary delineation of the domain. They characterize the location (centre of gravity and spatial patches), the occupation of space (inertia, isotropy, positive area, spreading area, and equivalent area), statistical dispersion (Gini index and coefficient of variation of strictly positive densities), and microstructure. Collocation between different ages and years is summarized by a global index of collocation. Indices are estimated for hake from a bottom-trawl data series in the Bay of Biscay in autumn of 1987-2004. The study provides a...

The impact of climate change on the fish community structure of the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Poulard, Jean-charles; Blanchard, Fabian.
Many fish species are at the southern or northern limit of their distribution range tit the Bay of Biscay, where large-scale hydroclimatic changes have occurred in recent decades. We attempt here to identify the impact of these changes on the fish community of the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. Data collected during 14 autumn groundfish surveys in 1973 and from 1987 to 2002 are used. The study area is between latitudes 48 degrees 30'N and 43 degrees 30'N while the depth ranges from 15 to 200 m. Annual abundance indices (number of individuals per km(2)) of 56 fish taxa present on average in at least 5% of the tows are computed. Multivariate analysis is used to detect temporal trends in these species' abundance indices. Assuming that...

Analyzing the market position of fish species subject to the impact of long-term changes: a case study of French fisheries in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Le Floc' H, P; Poulard, Jean-charles; Thebaud, Olivier; Blanchard, Fabian; Bihel, J; Steinmetz, Fabien.
Market position and its evolution were analysed in nine key fish and cephalopod species subject to long-term changes, using the Bay of Biscay fisheries as a case study. Although such long term changes have already been documented, and in some cases shown to be related to the impacts of fishing, changes in the physical environment, or both, relatively little work has been devoted to their potential consequences in economic terms. The nature and extent of these consequences was determined in the present study by looking at the composition of the affected fish production, and the status of different fish products on the markets. We propose a methodology to characterize market position for this set of nine species. The selected species represent a significant...
