The impacts of biofertilizer and mineral fertilization on the growth and production of yellow passion fruit irrigated with moderately saline water Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Nascimento,José A. M. do; Cavalcante,Lourival F; Cavalcante,Ítalo H. L; Pereira,Walter E; Dantas,Stênio A. G; Medeiros,Sherly A. da S.
Yellow passion fruit, because it is sensitive to the salinity of irrigation water or soil, requires restrictive water management strategies and inputs that mitigate the effects of salts on plants irrigated with harmful saline water levels. As such, an experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of bovine biofertilizer and mineral fertilization with NPK on the growth and production of yellow passion fruit plants irrigated with moderately saline water. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block with three replications and 12 plants per plot using a 4×2 factorial design with four doses of bovine biofertilizer diluted in water at 0, 33.3, 66.6 and 100% proportions in soil with and without NPK. The evaluated variables included the stem diameter, number...

Field response of Hylastinus obscurus Marsham (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to E-2-hexenal and limonene, two host-derived semiochemicals Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Parra,Leonardo; Mutis,Ana; Ortega,Fernando; Quiroz,Andrés.
L. Parra, A. Mutis, F. Ortega, and A. Quiroz. 2013. Field response of Hylastinus obscurus Marsham (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to ,E-2-hexenal and limonene, two host-derived semiochemicals. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(3): 637-642. Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), a valuable legume in Chile, is important mainly for seed production and as forage for animal production. Although it is considered a perennial, the productivity of this legume declines during the second year of growth primarily because of infestation by the red clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Currently, there is no efficient method for controlling this insect, although the use of semiochemicals may provide a new alternative to reduce the damage caused by this...

Vine balance: a study case in Carménère grapevines Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fredes,Claudio; Moreno,Yerko; Ortega,Samuel; Von Bennewitz,Eduardo.
Vitis vinifera cv. Carménère is a vigorous variety of grapevine that requires high temperatures and luminosity for achieving optimal phenolic maturity and herbal aromas, which has been reported to signifcantly delay harvest in Chile. This research was developed under the hypothesis that canopy management, vigor and crop load could modify the productive and vegetative relationships for obtaining early or late ripening and achieving vine balance. The aim of this study was to determine the vine balance and the time of ripeness for Carménère grapevines. Different vigor and canopy managements were evaluated. The study was conducted in the Central Valley of Chile during the 2007 to 2008 season with own-rooted Carménère vines trained to a four-cane vertical shoot...

Simulation of control strategies for decision-making regarding Digitaria sanguinalis in glyphosate-resistant soybeans Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Oreja,Fernando H; Bastida,Fernando; Gonzalez-Andújar,José L.
A bioeconomic model was developed for decision-making regarding large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) control in glyphosate-resistant soybeans in the Rolling Pampas ofArgentina. The model was used to evaluate the economic returns of four different glyphosate-based strategies for weed control. In the absence of herbicide application (T1), the soil seed bank increases to an equilibrium density of 12,079 seeds m-2 in three years. A single herbicide application during the early stages of the crop (T2), which was intended to be highly effective in the control of an early weed cohort, allows a late, unaffected cohort to produce sufficient seeds to maintain population densities in the soil seed bank. A single, delayed herbicide application (T3), which was...

Effect of culture medium and incubation on the characteristics of micropropagated agave plants Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Enríquez-del Valle,José R; Antonio-Luis,Karla H; Rodríguez-Ortiz,Gerardo; Campos-Ángeles,Gisela V.
Agave potatorum Zucc adventitious shoots were obtained in vitro from stem tissues and rooted in different solid media, pH 5.8, containing the following: 1) different concentrations (50, 75, and 100%) of MS (Murashige and Skoog) mineral salts and 2) different quantities of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) (0, 0.5, 1 mg L-1). The shoots in each medium were separated into two groups and incubated for 84 days under different environments, including a laboratory or greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 3×3×2 factorial arrangement. Adventitious roots emerged after 10 to 14 days of incubation, depending on the condition of incubation. In both laboratory and greenhouse settings, after 28 days of incubation, 66.6 and 93.6% of shoots...

Influence of physical attributes on the price of land: the case of the Province of Talca, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Troncoso,Javier L; Aguirre,Medardo; Manriquez,Paula; Labarra,Varinia; Ormazábal,Yony.
This study aims at estimating the percent impact on the price of farmland of the following physical attributes: size, soil quality, water rights, connectivity and location. To this effect, all the farm sales occurred in the province of Talca between 2003 and 2006 were examined, directly from the corresponding title deeds, at the Conservador de Bienes Raíces (Property Register) of Talca, obtaining thus a total of 92 observations. Subsequently, a linear function was estimated, with price per hectare as the dependent variable and the physical attributes listed above, as explanatory variables. Analysis showed that the most influential variable is location (Le. county) and in a very minor degree, connectivity (Le. distance to the nearest paved road), water...

Factors that influence the use of contract farming by southern Chilean farmers Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Morales,Liliana; Echeverría,Rodrigo; Barrera,María del V.
Unlike in the central zone of Chile, the use of contract farming (CF) is uncommon in the southern regions of the country, and few studies have attempted to explain this situation. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that influence the use of CF in southern Chile. The methodology consisted of two approaches: a quantitative approach, wherein a multinomial logit model was applied to data obtained from questionnaires completed by 384 southern producers, and a qualitative approach that included in-depth individual interviews with professionals, officials of public institutions, and producer focus groups. The main results show that producers with high educational levels, large farms, and production oriented toward the export market who are...

Diversity and singularity of the avifauna in the austral peat bogs of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ibarra,José Tomás; Anderson,Christopher B; Altamirano,Tomás A; Rozzi,Ricardo; Bonacic,Cristián.
Sphagnum-dominated peat bogs that are strongly embedded within the southern temperate forest matrix are increasingly being used for agriculture. Nevertheless, little is known about their biodiversity. Moreover, the remote areas of southern Chile where peat bogs are found, such as the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve (CHBR, 54-55ºS), where birds are the most diverse and best represented group of vertebrates, have not been well-investigated. With the aim to broaden this knowledge in the CHBR, we studied the diversity of the avian assemblage in peat bogs on Navarino Island. We compared the composition of avian species between wetlands with and without peat bogs to test if Sphagnum bogs represented a singular habitat for birds in this area. Furthermore, the 37 bird...

Factors that influence the price of cattle in livestock auctions: the case of the stockyard of Melipilla (Chile) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Troncoso,Javier L; Engler,Alejandra; Manriquez,Paula; Valdivia,Antonio.
This study aims to weigh the influence of observable traits on live cattle prices, i.e., the percent impact on the final price of various physical characteristics. These characteristics are those that commonly are published in auction catalogues, as is the case of: average lot weight, lot size, age, breed and corporal condition. In addition, the influence of seasonality and business cycles were also explored. Using the data collected from the records of El Tattersall S.A., a hedonic price function was fitted. The results showed that the most influential variables with respect to the price of beef cattle, in decreasing order, are as follows: 'condition', 'breed', 'quarter of sale' and 'year', which are followed far behind by 'lot size' and 'average weight'....

Genetic parameters of growth and survival in Acacia saligna shrubs Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mora,Freddy; Perret,Sandra; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Arnhold,Emmanuel.
Acacia species have valuable agronomic characteristics, such as the tolerance to unfavorable environmental conditions. In this study, genetic parameters and selection response in Acacia saligna shrubs were investigated in two arid environments of northern Chile: Cuz-Cuz and El Tangue. The quantitative traits were assessed in 5 year-old shrubs. A Bayesian approach, implemented using Gibbs sampling algorithm, was used in the data analysis. The tree survival was 87.3% and 81.8% in Cuz-Cuz and El Tangue, respectively, confirming the potential of A. saligna in northern Chile. The estimates of posterior mode of the heritability ranged from h2=0.13 (survival) to h2=0.25 (shrub crown diameter). Estimated genetic gain (individual tree selection) ranged from 6 to...

An update on genetically modified crops Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schwember,Andrés R.
A. R. Schwember. 2008. An update on genetically modified crops. Cien. Inv. Agr. 35(3):231-250. Genetically modified (GM) crops were introduced in the mid 1990s and two principal transgenic technologies currently domínate the market, herbicide-tolerant (HT) crops and insect-resistant crops (Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops). HT crops have simplified weed management practices, reduced crop production costs, and have had positive effects on the environment. However, there are concerns about the potential development of weeds resistant to glyphosate, the main herbicide employed with HT crops. A second major worry associated with the use of HT crops is the potential introgression of genes from GM crops into wild relatives (i.e. gene flow) and its potential...

Influence of a spray-dried fat enriched with EPA and DHA on the fatty acid composition of sow milk Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Grez,Mariola; Gandarillas,Mónica; González,Fernando; Vargas-Bello-Pérez,Einar.
Supplementation with eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA and DHA) through the addition of fish oils to mammal diets during lactation benefits milk production, litter growth and the litter immune system, but there is little evidence supporting the use of oils that have been dried using a spray-drying method designed to cool and crystalize fat particles. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a spray-dried dietary fat enriched with EPA and DHA on the fatty acid composition of sow milk. Fifteen pregnant sows were assigned to three dietary treatments from day 100 of gestation until weaning (day 28). Control sows (CONT) were fed an unsupplemented basal diet, and supplemented sows were fed the basal diet plus 20 g (FOPF20) or 40 g...

Effect of rainfall regimes on seed production and quality of Avena barbata Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Olivares,Alfredo; Johnston,Myrna; Calderón,Carolina.
The effects of rainfall amount and distribution on seed yield and quality in Avena barbata were evaluated in a greenhouse under controlled conditions with simulated rainfall regimes. A randomized complete-block design was used with five replications of one pot each. Seven treatments were established according to rainfall regimes for a real year in the semiarid zone in the Metropolitan Región, Chile: normal rainfall (1982), late rainfall (1987), normal-early rainfall (1962), normal-late rainfall (1989), dry-early rainfall (1981) and dry-late rainfall (1990). One treatment without water stress was left for comparison. One-year-old seeds were planted in pots with disinfected soil. The five most uniform plants in terms of size and health were chosen for the...

Attitudinal determinants of willingness-to-pay for river ecosystem improvements in central Chile: A choice experiment Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Huenchuleo,Carlos A; Barkmann,Jan; Marggraf,Rainer.
A respondent’s preference for non-market goods depends not only on the attributes of the goods but also on the respondent’s attitude towards the goods being valued. Accounting for these characteristics may substantially improve the ability of stated choice models to represent preference heterogeneity. In this regard, we analyzed the influence of respondent attitudes on the valuation of river ecosystem quality attributes affected by pulp mill wastewater in two central Chilean watersheds. We applied the Choice Experiment (CE) method to assess preferences on river pollution risk, water quality effects, threatened species and the yield in local fisheries. The payment vehicle was an additional annual charge to the electricity bill. All three...

D. Aros, C. Silva, C. Char, L. Prat, and V. Escalona. 2016. Role of flower preservative solutions during postharvest of Hydrangea macrophylla cv. Bela. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):418-428. Hydrangea macrophylla (hydrangea) is widely used as an ornamental plant and cut flower due to its inflorescence, which is composed of colored bracts. As cut flowers, hydrangeas show a postharvest life of up to 1 month at 2 °C, but little is known about their postharvest life during air shipment. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of Triton X-100 (surfactant) and ClO2 (biocide) during an air shipment simulation of hydrangea harvested at two floral stages of development: fresh and antique. Vase life, fresh weight loss (FWL) and solution uptake were evaluated after an...

Effect of the inoculum size on the axenic in vitro production of Steinernema carpocapsae Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Suárez-Sánchez,Juan; Alatorre-Rosas,Raquel; Poggi-Varaldo,Héctor M; Barrera-Cortés,Josefina.
The effect of inoculum size on the axenic in vitro production of Steinernema carpocapsae, using a transparent medium with hemoglobin and cholesterol, was studied. Axenic cultivation was performed with fertile eggs ofS. carpocapsae (hatching of eggs: 89 ± 4%), which were obtained by lyses of female nematodes and subsequent incubation. Two important aspects of this work include the use of a completely transparent medium enriched with hemoglobin and cholesterol and the high multiplication factor of the population (MFIP) of 87, which is considered high for in vitro axenic cultures of nematodes. In vivo methods have the advantage of high MFIP, but they also have the disadvantage of the high number and complexity of the operations involved for the purposes of...

Conservation of Brycon orbignyanus natural populations and stocks for their reproductive, genetic, environmental sustainability: A model for species threatened with extinction Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Lopera-Barrero,N. M.
Several ecological and climatic factors, especially those related to human activities, have been contributing to the disappearance of natural populations of piracanjuba (Brycon orbignyanus). Due to the importance of these fish to the ecosystems in which they are located and their qualities of fast growth and ability to adapt to controlled environments, producers have expressed increased interest in recent years in using this species, with particular aims of increasing production, and participation in conservation programs. In this study, strategies for the sustainable management of B. orbignyanus are idealized and discussed, with the goals of perfecting the reproductive, genetic, environmental and sanitary management of this species and suggestions for...
