Centronotus fasciatus Bl. & Schn. aan de Nederlandsche kust Naturalis
Popta, C.M.L..

Further revisional notes on the Belonidae Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
INTRODUCTION In my recent revision of the Belonidae (Mees, 1962) a number of problems had to remain unsolved because of lack of material, and in particular because of a number of named forms the type specimens had not been available. The revision was called "preliminary" for that reason. Thanks to the co-operation of colleagues in several countries I have been able, on a round-the-world tour which lasted from February to August, 1962, to examine nearly all the types of what I had previously had to regard as species dubiae, and other type specimens, which show that in a few instances the synonymy presented in my paper is erroneous. A serious error in the key also became obvious (see under Belone punctulata). Though, inevitably, a few problems remain to be...

Notes on the genus Amphiprion Bloch & Schneider, 1801 (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) and its host sea anemones in the Seychelles Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
The genus Amphiprion Bloch & Schneider, 1801, is represented in the Seychelles by two species, A. akallopisos Bleeker, 1853, and the endemic A. fuscocaudatus Allen, 1972. Throughout its distributional range Amphiprion akallopisos has exclusively been recorded to associate with the clownfish anemones Heteractis magnifica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1833) and Stichodactyla mertensii Brandt, 1835. During the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme (NIOP) Seychelles Expedition 19921993 this was confirmed for the Seychelles, although the species was predominantly found with H. magnifica, the most common host anemone in the islands. So far, Amphiprion fuscocaudatus had exclusively been reported as a symbiont of Stichodactyla mertensii. During the NIOP Seychelles...

The freshwater fishes of Java, as observed by Kuhl and van Hasselt in 1820-23 Naturalis
Roberts, T.R..
A catalog of 79 species of freshwater fishes collected by Kuhl and van Hasselt in western Java in 1820-23 is presented, based on examination of publications, archival materials and specimens in Paris and Leiden. Archival material includes copies of their original drawings (many watercoloured) and handwritten descriptions in Latin and German or Dutch of nearly all of their new genera and species in rough drafts and in near final or final version ready for publication. A number of the descriptions, such as that of Dermogenys pusilla, include extensive anatomical and biological observations. Study of the manuscripts, drawings, and specimens has resulted in numerous reidentifications and new records, including a number of species not previously reported from...

Vaillantellinae, A New Subfamily Of Cobitidae (Pisces, Cypriniformes) Naturalis
Nalbant, T.T.; Banarescu, P.M..
INTRODUCTION It is generally accepted that the Eurasian freshwater fish family Cobitidae includes three main divisions, usually considered as subfamilies: Cobitinae, Botiinae and Noemacheilinae (Berg, 1940; Ramaswami, 1953; Nalbant, 1963). The two first named, in which the lateral ethmoids are movable, are usually considered closer to each other than either of them to the Noemacheilinae. The largest subfamily is Noemacheilinae; some 180 species are presently accepted as valid, most of them being still ascribed to a single genus, Noemacheilus. Quite a few other genera are accepted besides Noemacheilus, one of these being Vaillantella Fowler, 1905. Its original description (Fowler, 1905, in a footnote) is quite short, mentioning only the very long dorsal...

South American freshwater needlefishes (Belonidae) of the genus Pseudotylosurus Naturalis
Collete, B.B..
Pseudotylosurus Fernández Yépez is considered a valid genus of Belonidae based on the following combination of characters: depressed caudal peduncle; long narrow side branches to lateral line; pleural ribs attached to fourth vertebra; nasal papilla spatulate; lower pharyngeal plate and upper pharyngeal bones two and three elongate. Two species are recognized: Ps. microps (Günther) and Ps. angusticeps (Günther). Belone amazonica Steindachner and Deltatylosurus guayoensis Martin are synonyms of Ps. microps; Ps. brasiliensis Fernández Yépez is a synonym of Ps. angusticeps. Ps. microps reaches a larger size than Ps. angusticeps and occurs primarily in the Orinoco, the Guianas, and the lower Amazon. Ps. angusticeps is primarily a species of the upper Amazon in...

Medusivorous fishes, a review Naturalis
Ates, R.M.L..
A preliminary review is presented of fish species having consumed pelagic Cnidaria (Scyphozoa and Hydrozoa) as well as Ctenophora. Quantitative data are scarce. Knowledge of morphological and physiological adaptations of fishes foraging on gelatinous plankton is almost non-existent. Many fish species consume medusae and some reasons to suspect that there are even more that do so, are discussed.

First record of Rivulus marmoratus Poey, 1880 From the South American continent (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae) Naturalis
Taphorn, D.C..
Rivulus marmoratus Poey, 1880 has previously been found only in south Florida, Cuba, the Bahamas, Barbuda, St. Martin and several islands off the Venezuelan coast (Curaçao, Bonaire and Gran Roque) (Hoedeman, 1958; Böhlke & Chaplin, 1968). In September of 1978, one of my students, Mr. Edgard W. Cabezas, brought me a specimen of this species that he had caught in the northern section of Maracaibo City, state of Zulia, Venezuela. We revisited the site, a poorly drained section of town near the western shore of the Straits of Lake Maracaibo, on 21.ix.1978 and 14.x. 1978, and collected an additional 19 specimens (15 of which are in my personal collection). Most of the fish were caught in shallow, brackish water (salinity 25°/00, temperature 3i°C) among...

On the absence of gill rakers in specimens of the Basking Shark, Cetorhinus maximus (Gunner) Naturalis
Deinse, A.B. van; Adriani, M.J..
In the majority of the papers dealing more or less extensively with Cetorhinus maximus the gill rakers (fanunculi) are correctly described and regarded as specifically characteristic, whilst in a number of other papers, e.g., de Blainville (1812), Vrolik (1826), and Tchang Si (1934) the gill rakers are not mentioned. This does not necessarily indicate that the specimens examined by the cited authors did not possess gill rakers, probably no definite search was made concerning the presence or absence of these parts. From 1821 till 1952 there stranded in the Netherlands or were brought ashore by fishermen 21 specimens of Cetorhinus maximus; of nine of these it was stated that they had gill rakers, four of these specimens proved to be without gill rakers,...

Vinstralen in vis en gruis Naturalis
Hoeksema, B.W..

Notes on marine fishes from the Netherlands Antilles, with the description of a new species, Eutyx tumidifrons (Brotulidae) Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
A small number of fishes from the Netherlands Antilles has been collected and recently presented to the Leiden Museum by Dr. J. S. Zaneveld, Head of the Biology Department, College of William and Mary, Norfolk, Va., formerly Director of the Caraibisch Marien Biologisch Instituut, Curaçao; and Dr. L. B. Holthuis, Curator of Carcinology at the Leiden Museum. While most specimens proved to belong to known Caribbean Syngnathidae, one very remarkable specimen appeared to belong to an undescribed species. The systematic position of the Chinese Fish Macrones Sinensis Bleeker (Siluroidea) Naturalis
Jayaram, K.C.; Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION Fishes of the genus Macrones Duméril (= Mystus Scopoli), family Bagridae, are mainly distributed from Syria in the north-west, through Pakistan, Ceylon, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand and Malaya, to the East Indies. Thirty-eight species have been described in the genus, of which six are reported as occurring in China (Jayaram, 1966: 445). In an earlier communication (Jayaram, 1968: 294) it was surmised that the genus may not be found in China and that the six species described from that country be best left out of Chinese lists, or that they may be placed under the predominantly Chinese genus Pelteobagrus Bleeker. Through the kind courtesy and co-operation of Dr. Volker Mahnert, Geneva, Dr. P. Kähsbauer, Vienna and Dr. M.-L. Bauchot,...

Notes on the fishes of Western New Guinea I Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
INTRODUCTION In the summer of 1954, I received an invitation from the Netherlands New Guinea Government to undertake a faunistic investigation of the fish fauna of the area. It was thought advisable for the promotion of the local New Guinea fisheries, to first obtain a more thorough knowledge of the fish fauna of the region, based on a collection as complete as could be attained within a reasonable time. As such a collecting trip could be expected to yield results of considerable zoological and zoogeographical importance, I gladly accepted this unique opportunity. A most fortunate circumstance was that my visit coincided with an already previously planned collecting trip to the same area by two of my colleagues, Dr. L. D. Brongersma, at the time...

Polynemus kapuasensis, a new threadfin (Perciformes: Polynemidae) from western Kalimantan, Indonesia, and a redescription of P. multifilis Temminck & Schlegel, 1843 Naturalis
Motomura, H.; Oijen, M.J.P. van.
Polynemus multifilis Temminck & Schlegel, 1843, is redescribed and its synonymy, authorship, type material status and distribution are discussed. In addition, a new species, P. kapuasensis, previously identified as P. multifilis, is described from the Kapuas River, western Kalimantan, Indonesia on the basis of 12 specimens. Polynemus kapuasensis differs from P. multifilis in having higher counts of pectoral filaments (usually 15 on each side of body vs. 14 in the latter), pored lateral line scales [mode 103 (range 100-110) vs. 86 (83- 99)], scale rows above lateral line [10 (9-11) vs. 8 (7 or 8)] and caudal peduncle scales [38 (35-40) vs. 32 (28- 37)], and a shorter pectoral fin [mean 31% (range 29-33%) of standard length], its posterior tip not...
