In Memoriam E.D. van Oort 1876 - 1933 Naturalis
Bayer, Ch..
On September 21st last Professor Dr. E. D. van Oort died at Leiden rather suddenly. For a considerable time his health had, indeed, been indifferent; on frequent occasions he had been unwell for shorter or longer periods, and in the spring of this year he was even obliged to apply for a four months' leave of absence. When after the expiry of this period, apparently recovered, he resumed his work, be it only for a few hours daily, we fostered the hope to have him among us for many years to come. Fate, however, decided differently. On Thursday morning he came to the museum, feeling better than on the previous days; he received the visitors cheerfully, and left the building past noon. Three hours later death had overtaken him. Eduard Daniel van Oort was born...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 39. The correct name for the Mangrove Whistler Pachycephala cinerea (Blyth) Naturalis
Walters, M.P..
The correct scientific name for the Mangrove Whistler is Pachycephala cinerea (Blyth, 1847) and not Pachycephala grisola (Blyth, 1843). The proposal for change by Mukherjee (1970) was based on a purported type specimen of the latter, which cannot qualify as a type.

Remarks on Chalcites malayanus (Raffles) Naturalis
Junge, G.C.A..
Till now it was assumed that the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Celebes are inhabited by the typical race of Chalcites malayanus. At Prof. Stresemann's request I compared the beautiful series collected by Heinrich in Celebes with the material in the Leiden Museum and it proved that the above mentioned region is inhabited by more than one race. Especially in series these races are well recognizable. Material was kindly sent me on loan by the British Museum, the Buitenzorg Museum, and the Raffles Museum. Chalcites malayanus malayanus (Raffles) Cuculus malayanus Raffles, Trans. Linn. Soc, vol. 13, 1821, p. 286 (Malay Peninsula). The upperparts are greenish tinged, in some specimens with a more or less bronze gloss. The forehead with a varying...

Current perspectives on the evolution of birds Naturalis
Ericson, P.G.P..
The paper summarizes the current understanding of the evolution and diversification of birds. New insights into this field have mainly come from two fundamentally different, but complementary sources of information: the many newly discovered Mesozoic bird fossils and the wealth of genetic analyses of living birds at various taxonomic levels. The birds have evolved from theropod dinosaurs from which they can be defined by but a few morphological characters. The early evolutionary history of the group is characterized by the extinctions of many major clades by the end of the Cretaceous, and by several periods of rapid radiations and speciation. Recent years have seen a growing consensus about the higher- level relationships among living birds, at least as...

On the sinus lumbosacralis, spina bifida occulta, and status dysraphicus in birds Naturalis
Jelgersma, H.C..
The sinus rhomboidalis sacralis or sinus lumbosacralis as it is named by Ariens Kappers (1920) is an interesting anatomical part of the lumbosacral region of the avian spinal medulla. It is found in birds only and neither in reptiles nor in mammals. Fig. 1 shows the lumbosacral part of the spinal medulla of Phoenicopterus Pig. 1. Spinal medulla of Phoenicopterus, dorsal view, with sinus lumbosacralis and corpus gelatinosum. From Imhof (1905). seen from the dorsal surface and Fig. 2 represents a diagrammatic transverse section through the lumbosacral part. These figures show some peculiarities that are found in birds only. All vertebrates with hind limbs have a lumbosacral enlargement of the spinal medulla, but in birds this enlargement has become more...

Morphological variation and taxonomic revision of five south-eastern subspecies of Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (L.) (Aves: Sylviidae) Naturalis
Loskot, V.M..
Individual, sex, age, seasonal and geographic variation of size and plumage coloration of Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (Linnaeus, 1758) was studied on more than 1100 bird skins from all parts of its breeding range. The results of analysis of birds from the south-eastern part of the breeding range of the species support the validity of five light-coloured subspecies: halimodendri Sushkin, 1904, telengitica Sushkin, 1925, snigirewskii Stachanow, 1929, minula Hume, 1873, and margelanica Stolzmann, 1897. Their diagnoses and ranges are refined and supplemented. Numerous phenotypically intermediate birds from intergradation zones between the subspecies show that these five together with the two northern darkcoloured forms S. c. curruca and S. c. blythi...

The mysterious Carpophaga vandepolli Büttikofer Naturalis
Junge, G.C.A..
In 1896 Büttikofer (Notes from the Leyden Museum, vol. 18) published upon a collection of birds from Nias, collected there by Kannegieter. In this paper he described a new species, Carpophaga vandepolli (p. 190). This bird is closely allied to Carpophaga consobrina (now called Ducula aenea consobrina Salvad.), but is different "by a large pinkish brown patch on the occiput and the conspicuously wine-red color of the breast". In D. a. consobrina these parts are a splendid grey colour, sometimes more or less washed with a vinaceous tinge. In discussing this new species Büttikofer said: "It is not without hesitation that I describe this bird as new, the idea being rather perplexing that two so closely allied species should inhabit so small an island as Nias"....

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 9. The “Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées” of Temminck & Laugier (1820-1839) Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C..
The “Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées” of Temminck & Laugier (1820-1839) contains many descriptions of new birds and is of fundamental importance to the history of ornithology. A new detailed review of the evidence presented by the book itself has brought clarity to the relationships between the plates and the livraisons2 of which they were a part. The opportunity has been taken to provide a fresh list of dates for the livraisons, this contains minor changes to that of Zimmer (1926) and the earlier, more widely known one of Sherborn (1898). After this study reached its conclusions important new information has come to light, which confirms the main findings. The second part of this paper reviews specific cases investigated. These relate to Asian...

A list of the birds known from Roti and adjacent islets (Lesser Sunda Islands) Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
INTRODUCTION Father Verheijen (in press) has given a narrative of his visit to Roti, with a list of all birds recorded from material, personal observations, and hearsay. Although several of Verheijen's own field observations are entirely reliable, other species mentioned by him cannot be regarded as of anything but very doubtful occurrence. Therefore I have considered it useful to compile a list of those birds which are now known from collected specimens. Previous to Father Verheijen's studies, ornithological knowledge of Roti rested entirely on a visit to the island made by the anthropologist Dr. H. F. C. ten Kate in 1891 (22 August — 9 September). During his stay ten Kate did some collecting of miscellaneous zoological objects, which he forwarded to...

Zur Nomenklatur einiger Raubvögel und Eulen Naturalis
Mees, G.F..

Dawn chorus variation in East-Asian tropical montane forest birds and its ecological and morphological correlates Naturalis
Chen, W.-M.; Lee , Y.-F.; Tsai, C.-F.; Yao, C.-T.; Chen, Y.-H.; Li, S.-H.; Kuo, Y.-M..
Many birds in breeding seasons engage in vigorous dawn singing that often turns to a prominent chorus. We examined dawn chorus variation of avian assemblages in a tropical montane forest in Taiwan and tested the hypothesis that onset sequence is affected by eye sizes, foraging heights, and diet of birds. Chorus onset and duration varied between sampling months, but generally peaked in the prime breeding season. Overall dawn chorus length increased with, but mean duration per species was negatively correlated with, species richness. The inter-correlation among trait variables in phylogenetic independent contrasts was calculated and examined. Both foraging height and relative eye size were selected as positively explanatory factors, but no dietary effects...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 37. Types of the Chloropseidae and Irenidae Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Dekker, R.W.R.J.; Eck, S.; Somadikarta, S..
A list of about 50 names applied to species of leafbirds (family Chloropseidae) and 15 names applied to species of fairy bluebirds (family Irenidae) is presented. This list provides information on the whereabouts of a type. Where our information does not include reliable data we provide notes to explain the deficit and to stimulate others to offer additional data or sources of information.

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 53. The authorship and date of publication of the “Catalogue of the Specimens and Drawings of Mammalia and Birds of Nepal and Thibet presented by B.H. Hodgson, Esq. to the British Museum” Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Walters, M..
The authorship of this work or at least the ornithological part of it, and of the subsequent 1863 report, is best attributed to both John Edward Gray, who signed the preface, and his brother George Robert Gray. The first report has an imprint date of 1846, but evidence shows that this was not available as a published work until January 1847. The potential for priority conflict between this Catalogue and papers by Hodgson and Blyth in 1844-46, and between the Catalogue and G.R. Gray (1844-49), is discussed; and the new names proposed by Gray & Gray in the Catalogue are examined to see which were immediately in synonymy when they were published. Attention is drawn to the correct authorship of the generic name Aceros as being Hodgson and not J.E. Gray.

Zosterops montana minima nomen novum for Zosterops montana minor Hoogerwerf & De Boer from Mt. Papandajan (South Priangan, West Java) Naturalis
Hoogerwerf, A..
In a previous paper (Hoogerwerf and De Boer, 1947, p. 252) we described as Zosterops montana minor a new white-eye from Mt. Papandajan (South Priangan, West Java). Mr. A. C. V. van Bemmel and Dr. Ernst Mayr, however, called our attention to the fact, that the subspecific name minor cannot be used in this case, because this name is preoccupied by Zosterops albiventer minor Meyer. 1874 (p. 105) from Jobi, New Guinea, which is known as Zosterops minor minor in Mayr's (1941) List. On account of the above we have to introduce a new name for Zosterops montana minor. We take this opportunity to add to the original dutch description the following particulars. Siebers (1929, p. 151) separated birds belonging to this species from Central Java (Mt. Sumbing and...

Temporal and spatial patterns of laying in the Moluccan megapode Eulipoa wallacei (G.R. Gray) Naturalis
Baker, G.C..
The Moluccan megapode Eulipoa wallacei (G.R. Gray, 1860) lays its eggs at night in the sand at communal nesting beaches. The majority of the world’s Moluccan megapode population rely on only two nesting grounds on the islands of Halmahera and Haruku, Indonesia. An understanding of the ecological characteristics of these breeding sites is thus important in terms of conservation. Studies of the largest of the two nesting grounds in Halmahera have shown specific temporal and spatial patterns of egg laying. In this paper I discuss the adaptive significance and conservation implications of these laying patterns.

Malleefowl conservation in New South Wales: a review Naturalis
Priddel, D.; Wheeler, R..
Together with land clearance, grazing by stock and inappropriate fire regimes, predation by the introduced European red fox Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) has decimated populations of malleefowl Leipoa ocellata Gould, 1840. The decline of the malleefowl has been most pronounced in New South Wales, where foxes prey so heavily on malleefowl that adult mortality exceeds recruitment of young into the breeding population. Although young malleefowl are particularly vulnerable to foxes, subadults and adults are also taken. Within New South Wales, heavy predation by foxes occurs both in the remnants of native vegetation within agricultural lands and in the large tracts of mallee that lie further inland. Foxes appear to be the prime cause of malleefowl mortality...
