Anomalous Origin of Obturator Artery from the Internal Iliac Artery International Journal of Morphology

Obturator arteryis frequently a branch of anterior division of internal iliac artery or one of the parietal branches of internal iliac artery. But it has attracted attention of pelvic surgeons and anatomists and radiologists because of the high frequency of the variation in its course and origin. The present report demonstrates obturator artery to be arising from the posterior division of internal iliac artery out of 316 pelvises, a rare observation in Indian population. The variation is correlated developmentally and its clinical implications are also discussed

Unilateral Double Axillary and Double Brachial Arteries: Embryological Basis and Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology

This report presents double axillary and double brachial arteries on the right side of an adult male cadaver. In this case, the right axillary artery bifurcated into axillary artery I and axillary artery II posterior to the pectoralis minor muscle. Both the axillary arteries with their branches traversed upto lower border of teres major muscle and continued further as seperate entities into the cubital fossa as brachial artery I and brachial artery II respectively. The axillary artery I which continued as brachial artery I was superficial and tortuous in its course, while the axillary artery II was slender and deeply situated. Unusual Third Head of the Sternocleidomastoid Muscle from the Investing Layer of Cervical Fascia International Journal of Morphology

The abnormal origin, presence of additional head and layered arrangement of fibers are the reported variations of sternocleidomastoid muscle in the past. In the present case we report a rare unusual origin of third head of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in a 60 year-old male cadaver. This additional head originated from the investing layer of cervical fascia in the roof of the subclavian triangle close to the clavicle and traversed obliquely upward, forward and fused with clavicular head. The insertion and nerve supply of the muscle was found to be normal.

Occurrence of the Accessory Foramina of the Mandibular Ramus in Brazilian Adults and its Relation to Important Mandibular Landmarks International Journal of Morphology

The presence of the Accessory Foramina of the Mandibular Ramus (AFMR) may be related to anaesthetic failures in the inferior alveolar nerve block and complications in the ramus surgeries. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the occurrence of the AFMR in adults and, when present, measure its distance to the Mandibular Foramen (MF), to the Mandibular Lingula (ML) and to the posterior margin of the mandibular ramus (PM), comparing data obtained in both sides of the mandible. A Complex Variation of the Parietal and Visceral Branches of the Abdominal Aorta International Journal of Morphology

Variations in the branches of the abdominal aorta were determined during a routine abdominal region dissection of a 70-year-old male cadaver. Left gastric artery arose as the first root from antero-lateral of aorta. Coeliacomesenteric trunk occurred as a thick root. After 29.9mm, coeliacomesenteric trunk bifurcated as coeliac trunk and superior mesenteric artery. Coeliac trunk bifurcated as splenic artery and common hepatic artery. These multiple variations which change the normal anatomic structure of the abdominal aorta have to be kept in mind by surgeons, radiologists and anatomists.

Anomalous Lobar Pattern of Right Lung: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology

The right lung classically has two fissures, an oblique and a horizontal, dividing it into three lobes namely the superior, middle and lower. The anomaly of the lobar pattern has been described by many research workers on CT scans, where as, there are fewer studies on gross anatomical specimens. In the present case , which was incidentally detected, we report three fissures dividing the right lung into four lobes. Such abnormal fissures and lobes are clinically important for identifying broncho-pulmonary segments. Anatomical knowledge of anomalies of fissures and lobes of lungs may be important for surgeons performing lobectomies, radiologists interpreting X ray and CT scans and also of academic interest to all medical personnel

The abdominal aorta of the rabbit has been in the focus of research to develop new platforms of training diagnostic and therapeutic protocols; and for testing endovascular devices and materials, however, few descriptions of the anatomy of the abdominal aorta and its emerging visceral branches has been reported on the scientific literature for this specie. Anatomical variations are common and should have in mind during research and clinical trials. The aim of this study was to describe the different patterns that can occur in the visceral branches arising from the abdominal aorta in the rabbit.

Parotid Gland with Double Duct: An Anatomic Variation Description International Journal of Morphology

The parotid is the largest salivary gland in humans producing an essentially serous secretion, which normally reaches the oral cavity through a sole duct (the parotid duct) after the latter making its way through the buccinator muscle to reach the mucosa lining the mouth at the level of the cheek. The present study reports on a rare case of double parotid duct found during the dissection the right side of the face of a cadaver of a 46-year-old male individual. Double Plantaris Muscle: A Cadaveric Study with Clinical Importance International Journal of Morphology

The gastrocnemius, plantaris and the soleus muscles, comprise the posterior (flexor) compartment muscles of the leg. The plantaris muscle is responsible for causing plantar flexion of the foot. The muscle is vestigial in human beings and has much clinical importance. The muscle is known to exhibit variations but there are few reports on the existence of double plantaris muscle. A large range of variability marks the branching pattern of the axillary artery. The knowledge of the anatomical variations and this pattern is essential to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including surgery, of the axillary region. The aim of this study was to observe the different possible origins of circumflex humeral arteries and to measure the length and diameter of each vessel. In our study, 24 armpits from adult cadavers (fixed in tamponed formalin 10%) were dissected. The data were analyzed with a digital caliper and the results expressed as Mean ± SD. Unusual Branches of Femoral Artery in the Femoral Triangle: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology

Femoral artery is the major artery of the lower limb. It shows some variations in its branching pattern. One of the rare but clinically important variations is the origin of deep circumflex iliac and inferior epigastric arteries from it instead of from external iliac artery. We report here the origin of inferior epigastric and deep circumflex iliac arteries from the femoral artery bilaterally. Both the arteries passed up deep to the inguinal ligament and had a normal course and distribution after crossing the inguinal ligament. Knowledge of these variations is of importance in plastic surgery, anterior approach to the hip joint, draining psoas abscess or reducing a femoral hernia.

Accessory Mental Foramina Assessed by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: Report of Unilateral and Bilateral Detection International Journal of Morphology

Accessory mental foramen (AMF) is a rare anatomical variation with particular importance in local anesthesia and surgical procedures, especially the placement of dental implants. We report the cases of two adult patients, which were referred for Cone-Beam Computed tomography (CBCT) evaluation, which revealed the presence of three AMFs connected to the mandibular canal, one case with one AMF on the right side unilaterally, and another case was bilateral. The mean diameter measured for the AMFs was 1.23 (±0.45) mm, and the mean distance from the mandibular foramen to the AMF was 3.3 (±1.5) mm, with the AMF located in the premolar area superiorly or distally to the MF. A Case of Unilateral Fenestration and Duplication of the External Jugular Vein International Journal of Morphology

The external jugular vein is increasingly being utilized as the recipient vein in head and neck free tissue transfers, and for cannulation in order to conduct diagnostic procedures or intravenous therapies. The variations in the patterns of its course, and knowledge of them, are therefore important. We report on a unique and previously non-described unilateral fenestration and duplication of the external jugular vein found during the neck dissection of a 77-year-old female cadaver. Embryological evaluation and clinical implications of the anomaly are described. Clinicians and surgeons performing neck vascular or reconstructive surgery should be aware of this variation of the external jugular vein in the hope of preventing inadvertent injury.

Abnormal Branch of External Iliac Artery in the Iliac Fossa International Journal of Morphology

An abnormal artery arising from external iliac artery was found during routine dissection class for medical undergraduates. The artery took its origin from the external iliac artery midway between its origin from common iliac and termination as femoral artery. The abnormal artery divided into two branches; an ascending and a descending. The ascending branch supplied iliacus and iliac crest. The descending branch entered the femoral triangle by passing behind the femoral sheath. It supplied the muscles of femoral triangle and anastomosed with medial circumflex femoral artery. The knowledge of this variation may be of use for surgeons doing surgery of femoral hernia.

Anomalous Origin of the Circumflex Branch from the Right Coronary Artery International Journal of Morphology

Coronary anomalies are a group of congenital disorders. Most of the coronary anomalies are asymptomatic and benign but may cause myocardial ischemia and sudden death. Some of them are dangerous if they associate with other heart diseases. One of the congenital coronary anomalies is anomalous origin of the circumflex branch from the right coronary artery that is a rare congenital anomaly. We present a case of a 61-year-old man with history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. The coronary angiography reveals a circumflex branch from the right coronary artery.

Origin of Inferior Phrenic Arteries in the Celiac Trunk International Journal of Morphology

The knowledge of the arterial anatomic variations is very important for the clinical, radiological and surgical diagnosis. Regarding inferior phrenic arteries, which irrigate the diaphragm, it is known that they vary in relation to their origin. The purpose of the present study is to verify these variations. The abdominal cavity of eighty-nine adult cadavers of both sexes was dissected, of which 69 fixed in 10% formalin solution and 20 non-fixed. Unilateral Double Plantaris Muscle: A Rare Anatomical Variation International Journal of Morphology

The occurrence of a unilateral second plantaris muscle was discovered during the anatomical dissection of a 47 year old female with Huntington Chorea Disease. The cadaver was found to possess bilateral plantaris muscles and a distinct anomalous muscle morphologically resembling a second plantaris on the medial right leg. The inner and outer bellies of the anomalous plantaris arose proximally from the medial condyle of the femur and formed a short tendon that fused distally with the tendon of the lateral plantaris muscle.
