Effects of aroma quality on the biotransformation of natural 2-phenylethanol produced using ascorbic acid Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Tian,Xun; Ye,Rui; Wang,Jingwen; Chen,Yifei; Cai,Baoguo; Guan,Shimin; Rong,Shaofeng; Li,Qianqian.
Background Natural 2-phenylethanol (2-PE) is an important flavoring that emits the aroma of roses. During biotransformation, the aroma quality of natural 2-PE is affected by its main by-products, which include butanol, isobutyric acid, butyric acid, and isovaleric acid. Thus, controlling undesirable by-product formation can reduce the effect of odor on 2-PE aroma quality. Results 2-PE was produced through biotransformation using l-phenylalanine as a substrate and glucose as a carbon source. Ascorbic acid was added to the system to improve the redox reaction and suppress the generation of by-products. Principal component analysis of the aroma quality of 2-PE was performed using an electronic nose. Similarity analysis revealed that the effects of four...

Modulatory effects of the antioxidant ascorbic acid on the direct genotoxicity of doxorubicin in somatic cells of Drosophila melanogaster Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fragiorge,Edson José; Spanó,Mário Antônio; Antunes,Lusânia Maria Greggi.
In this study two different crosses involving the wing cell markers mwh and flr³ (standard (ST) cross and high bioactivation (HB) cross, the latter being characterized by a high constitutive level of cytochrome P450 which leads to an increased sensitivity to a number of promutagens and procarcinogens) were used to investigate the modulatory effects of ascorbic acid (AA) combined with the antitumor agent doxorubicin (DXR) in Drosophila melanogaster. We observed that the two different concentrations of AA (50 or 100 mM) had no effect on spots frequencies, while DXR treatments (0.2 or 0.4 mM) gave positive results for all types of spots, when compared to negative control. For marker-heterozygous (MH) flies, a protective effect was observed with the lower...

Nutritional components affecting skeletal development in fish larvae ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Takeuchi, Toshio.
Marine fish larvae undergo major functional and morphological changes during the developmental stages and several factors can interfere with the normal development of larvae and affect fry quality. Skeletal malformations, such as spinal malformation-scoliosis, lordosis, coiled vertebral column-, missing or additional fin rays, bending opercle or jaw malformations, are frequently observed in hatchery-reared larvae. This paper reviews the effects of some nutritional components on skeletal development in larvae of a number of fish species. In the dietary lipid fraction, for instance, it was proven that the phospholipid concentration affected the spinal malformation rate in sea bass fed a compound diet from mouth opening onwards. Phosphatidylinositol, in...

Preservation of minimally processed 'aurora-1' peaches using additives Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Martins,Ramilo Nogueira; Mattiuz,Ben-Hur; Santos,Leandra Oliveira; Morgado,Cristiane Maria Ascari; Mattiuz,Claudia Fabrino Machado.
'Aurora-1' peaches establishes an interesting alternative as a minimally processed product, due to its characteristics like flavor, color, smell, and also because of its handling resistance. However, it has a short shelf life after a fresh-cut due to enzymatic browning and stone cavity collapse. The main purpose of this research was to test the additive with antioxidant effect to prevent browning in minimally processed 'Aurora-1' peaches. The minimal processing consists of washing, sanitizing, peelings and fruit stone extraction. After that, longitudinal cuts were made to obtain eight segments per fruit. The slices were immersed into the following treatment solutions: control (immersion in 2% ascorbic acid); 2% ascorbic acid + 2% calcium chloride; 1%...

Glycosaminoglycans and vitamin C in ovo feeding affects bone characteristics of chicks R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Elaine Talita; Sgavioli,Sarah; Castiblanco,Diana Maryuri Correa; Domingues,Carla Heloísa de Faria; Quadros,Thays Cristina Oliveira de; Borges,Liliana Longo; Petrolli,Tiago Goulart; Baraldi-Artoni,Silvana Martinez.
ABSTRACT Different levels of glycosaminoglycans (chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate) and vitamin C were injected in ovo to determine whether additive use influences the incubation parameters and bone characteristics of posthatch chicks. Hatchability was not affected by addition of glycosaminoglycans and vitamin C in ovo. However, chicks that received 4 μg additive showed 2.86% reduction in total mortality when compared with chicks from non-injected eggs. Moreover, tibia area and femur bone mineral density increased in chicks from eggs injected with 2.16 and 6.00 μg of additive, respectively. In ovo feeding with glycosaminoglycans and vitamin C can benefit bone development in embryos and reduce total mortality during the incubation period.
