A bio-economic analysis of long term changes in the production of French fishing fleets operating in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Steinmetz, Fabien; Thebaud, Olivier; Blanchard, Fabian; Le Floc H, Pascal; Bihel, J.
Selective fishing pressure on more highly valued marine living resources is one of the key factors proposed to explain changes occurring in fish communities and associated landings of commercial fisheries. The aim of this paper is to establish the nature of changes in the landings of French fishing fleets operating in the Bay of Biscay in the period 1973-2002, and whether these changes could be related to the relative economic attractiveness of different fish species. The analysis focuses on trends observed in the landings of all commercial fish species over the last three decades. It is based on data of annual quantities landed and ex-vessel prices compiled from official French landings records, and on bio-geographical descriptors of these species derived...

Typology of hydrological structures modelled and observed over the Bay of Biscay shelf ArchiMer
Planque, Benjamin; Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie.
Collecting hydrological observations over the whole Bay of Biscay continental shelf can require several weeks. As a result, the observations are not truly synoptic and the interpretation of hydrological structures is corrupted by the time-lags between observations at distinct locations. We evaluated the effects of non-synoptic sampling during a spring cruise (17 April to 13 May 2000), using outputs from 3D hydrodynamic models as a substitute for true synoptic sampling. We developed a method for clustering hydrological regions based on the vertical structure of the water column and temporal changes in hydrography. In parallel, outputs from the 3D model were compared with field observations. The results show that in spring 2000 the Bay of Biscay continental...

Historical fluctuations in spawning location of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the Bay of Biscay during 1967-73 and 2000-2004 ArchiMer
Bellier, Edwige; Planque, Benjamin; Petitgas, Pierre.
The spatial extent of small pelagic fish spawning habitat is influenced by environmental factors and by the state of the adult population. In return, the configuration of spawning habitat affects recruitment and therefore the future structure of the adult population. Interannual changes in spatial patterns of spawning reflect variations in adult population structures and their environment. The present study describes the historical changes in the spatial distribution of spawning of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the Bay of Biscay during two periods: 1967-72 and 2000-2004. Using data from egg surveys conducted in spring, the spatial distributions of anchovy and sardine eggs are characterized by means of geostatistics....

Spatial and Seasonal Distributions of Frontal Activity over the French Continental Shelf in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Yelekci, Ozge; Charria, Guillaume; Capet, Xavier; Reverdin, Gilles; Sudre, Joel; Yahia, Hussein.
The frontal activity in coastal regions remains a research field where a large number of open questions needs to be addressed to quantify the potential impact of these processes on dependent systems (e.g. biogeochemical activity). Spatial and seasonal distributions of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) fronts (∼1-100 km) in the vicinity of main French rivers, Gironde and Loire, are explored over the continental shelf North of 45 °N in the Bay of Biscay. A high resolution (1 km spatial and daily temporal resolutions) dataset of 11 years' (2003 to 2013) remotely sensed SST by MODIS sensor onboard Aqua and Terra satellites has been investigated and compared with coastal numerical model experiments. The detection and characterization fronts with fluctuating...

Fluid emissions at the Aquitaine Shelf (Bay of Biscay, France): A biogenic origin or the expression of hydrocarbon leakage? ArchiMer
Dupre, Stephanie; Berger, Laurent; Le Bouffant, Naig; Scalabrin, Carla; Bourillet, Jean-francois.
Fishery acoustic surveys conducted in the Bay of Biscay and dedicated to monitoring and predicting pelagic ecosystem evolution reveal numerous active seeps on the Aquitaine Shelf, east of the shelf break, at water depths ranging from 140 to 185 m. Some acoustic anomalies recorded in the water column with hull-mounted single and multibeam echosounders are clearly caused by fluid escape at the seabed, most likely gases. These fluid emissions are associated at the seafloor with high backscatter subcircular small-scale mounds, on average less than 2 m high and a few metres in diameter. Based on near-bottom video and acoustic surveys, these mounds are interpreted to be by-products of gas seepage, possibly methane-derived authigenic carbonates. The spatial...

Evolution of upper layer temperature in the Bay of Biscay during the last 40 years ArchiMer
Michel, Sylvain; Vandermeirsch, Frederic; Lorance, Pascal.
The temperature evolution over the past 40 years in the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic) is investigated from an in situ data analysis, completed with a satellite SST (Sea Surface Temperature) analysis over the last 20 years. The in situ dataset is an interannual version of the BoByClim climatology, covering the Bay of Biscay area with a 10-km horizontal resolution and a 5-m vertical step. The satellite dataset is the European COastral Sea Operational Observing and Forcast System Program (ECOOP) daily analysis, covering the IBIROOS (Iberian-Biscay-Irish Sea) area with a 4-km resolution. The study area (43 degrees N-50 degrees N/12 degrees W-1 degrees W) extends over the intersection of the domains covered by these two analyses. In the 0-200 m layer of...

Processus et enregistrements sédimentaires dans les canyons sous-marins Bourcart et de Capbreton durant le dernier cycle climatique. ArchiMer
Gaudin, Mathieu.
Submarine canyons cutting continental shelves and slopes are considered to be erosive features allowing continental derived sediment to reach the deep sea. In order to better understand their sedimentary dynamic and morphologic evolution through time, two submarine canyons, the Bourcart canyon in the Gulf of Lion and the Capbreton canyon in the Bay of Biscay have been studied. The Bourcart canyon, located at the shelf break at 110 m water depth, is disconnected from direct sediment supply during sea-level highstand and is considered as inactive. The Capbreton canyon's head is located 400 m off the coastline, and is disconnected from the Adour river since the 16th century. Bathymetric, core, radioisotopic and current data showed that these canyons are...

Pb, Zn, Cs, Sc and rare earth elements as tracers of the Loire and Gironde particles on the Biscay shelf (SW France) ArchiMer
Jouanneau, Jm; Weber, O; Grousset, Fe; Thomas, B.
The western Atlantic continental margin of the Bay of Biscay is characterised by a combined macro-tidal and a high energy environment. These conditions are responsible for the essentially sandy sedimentary cover along with well-defined fine deposit zones observed on the shelf. The main continental sources are the Loire, Gironde and Adour Rivers. It is estimated that 2.4 to 2.5 million tons of fine sediments are supplied annually to the ocean from these rivers of the French Atlantic coast. The Gironde and the Loire contribute with 84 % and the Gironde with 60 % of this amount. Previous studies of the distribution of the clay mineral assemblages and of oligo-elements have distinguished two provinces (north and south Biscay areas) according to these riverine...

Fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities. Comparative analysis of the role of the interactions between specices in the Bay of Biscay and in the Gulf of Lion (France). ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices were used in order to characterise the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The data were provided by yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for stock assessment. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are...

Surface water circulation patterns in the southeastern bay of biscay: new evidences from hf radar data ArchiMer
Solabarrieta, Lohitzune; Rubio, Anna; Castanedo, Sonia; Medina, Raul; Charria, Guillaume; Hernandez, Carl.
High Frequency (HF) radar stations have been working operationally in the southeastern part of the Bay of Biscay since 2009. The (2) systems provide hourly surface currents, with 5 km spatial resolution and a radial coverage lying close to 180 km. The detailed and quantitative description of the spatial patterns observed by the HF radar offers new evidence on the main ocean processes, at different time scales, affecting a study area where surface currents show marked temporal and spatial variability. A clear seasonality in terms of sea surface currents and along-slope circulation is observed, with cyclonic and anticyclonic patterns during the winter and summer months, respectively. From the analysis of low-pass filtered currents, a key component of this...

Indicator-Based Geostatistical Models For Mapping Fish Survey Data ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Woillez, Mathieu; Doray, Mathieu; Rivoirard, Jacques.
Marine research survey data on fish stocks often show a small proportion of very high-density values, as for many environmental data. This makes the estimation of second-order statistics, such as the variance and the variogram, non-robust. The high fish density values are generated by fish aggregative behaviour, which may vary greatly at small scale in time and space. The high values are thus imprecisely known, both in their spatial occurrence and order of magnitude. To map such data, three indicator-based geostatistical methods were considered, the top-cut model, min–max autocorrelation factors (MAF) of indicators, and multiple indicator kriging. In the top-cut and MAF approaches, the variable is decomposed into components and the most continuous ones...

Les couches diffusantes du golfe de Gascogne : caractérisation acoustique, composition spécifique et distribution spatiale ArchiMer
Remond, Barbara.
Fisheries acoustic data are continuously collected during ecosystemic surveys to detect sh schools of commercial species and to quantify the sh abundance. These multifrequency data also contain information about smaller target aggregations producing ubiquitous Sound Scat- tering Layers (SSLs) on the echograms, with quite diverse shape, frequency responses and taxonomic compositions. In this work, we focus on the SSLs observed in spring in the Bay of Biscay during the PELGAS surveys. The objectives are: i) to classify SSLs, ii) to describe their spatial meso-scale distribution, iii) to investigate their relationships with oher exosystme components, and iv) to investigate the taxonomic composition of resonant SSLs at ne scale. Fluctuations d'abondance de l'ichtyoplancton sur une zone frontale cotiere (Golfe de Gascogne: Baie d'Audierne) ArchiMer
Camus, Patrick; Delpech, Jean-paul; Omnes, Marie-helene; Mastail, Max.
A two years ichthyoplankton sampling program over an eight station network on each side of a coastal tidal front was conducted twice a month during neap tides. A principal component analysis was performed on the data (taxa and observations) which were segregated during the summer into two groups of taxa related to two groups of stations belonging to two different hydrodynamical areas. In July and August 1980 during a tide cycle, zooplankton was investigated at two stations in the stratified and transitional area. Periodic fluctuations of meroplanktonic taxa correlated to the movement of the front induced by the tide were observed.

Large-amplitude internal tides, solitary waves, and turbulence in the central Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Xie, X. H.; Cuypers, Y.; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Ferron, Bruno; Pichon, Annick; Lourenco, A.; Cortes, Norbert.
Microstructure and fine-scale measurements collected in the central Bay of Biscay during the MOUTON experiment are analyzed to investigate the dynamics of internal waves and associated mixing. Large-amplitude internal tides (ITs) that excite internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the thermocline are observed. ITs are dominated by modes 3 and 4, while ISWs projected on mode 1 that is trapped in the thermocline. Therein, ITs generate a persistent narrow shear band, which is strongly correlated with the enhanced dissipation rate in the thermocline. This strong dissipation rate is further reinforced in the presence of ISWs. Dissipation rates during the period without ISWs largely agree with the MacKinnon-Gregg scaling proposed for internal wavefields dominated by a...

Characterising the temporal variability of the spatial distribution of animals: an application to seabirds at sea ArchiMer
Certain, Gregoire; Bellier, E; Planque, Benjamin; Bretagnolle, V.
Understanding the patterns of spatial and temporal variations in animal abundance is a fundamental question in ecology. Here, we propose a method to quantify temporal variations in animal spatial patterns and to determine the spatial scale at which such temporal variability is expressed. The methodology extends from the approach proposed by Taylor (Taylor, L. R. 1961. Aggregation, variance and the mean. Nature 189: 732-735) and relies on models of the relationship between temporal mean and variance in animal abundance. Repeated observations of the spatial distribution of populations are used to construct spatially explicit models of Taylor's power law. The resulting slope parameters of the Taylor power law provide local measures of the temporal variability...

External controls on turbidite sedimentation on the glacially-influenced Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay, western European margin) ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Zaragosi, Sebastien; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Cremer, Michel.
Sequence stratigraphic models predict increased sediment delivery to deep-water areas during sea-level lowstand. The Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay, western European margin) is an interesting area to test this hypothesis because the margin has a wide continental shelf, still partly flooded during sea-level lowstand, and the Armorican turbidite system has experienced fluctuating sediment fluxes since the last glacial period. The stratigraphic response of the Armorican turbidite system to sea-level oscillations and climate changes was assessed for the last 35,000 years through the study of the Guilcher, Crozon and Audierne levees. Millenial-timescale resolution chronostratigraphy allowed us to reconstruct the sediment accumulation and turbidite frequency,...
