The aim of this work, which was done as a Doctorate of Philosophy (Phd), was to collect the information necessary to help improve the management of the western Channel spider crab stock. The fîrst section présents the main aspects of spider crab population biology. As well as contributing our own results on spider crab habitat, stock density, démographie structure, growth and mortality estimâtes, migrations, reproduction and recruitment, a synthesis is included of the existing scientific literature. The second section on exploitation covers various features of the fishery : its history, fishing methods, fleet structure, spatial and seasonal distribution of fishing efforts in 1986, trends in the landings, fishing effort and catch per unit effort,... |

This book represents a two year study by a team of French biologists to collect, summarise and present the experience and knowledge gained in the rearing of the giant freshwater prawn, not only in the French overseas territories but also in the main countries which are developing this culture. This document comprises four parts : - The first describes the world market. The prawn rearing is already an economic reality in the tropical world, the United States and in Europe. - The second on shows that, although the culture techniques are quite complex, production systems can be adapted to local conditions and markets. - The third part is a practical guide, both for investors and farmers, giving all necessary data to start-up and monitor a project in the... |

The research programme developed within in the framework of the project study of the Paluel site allowed us to highlight, near the drainage channel of the Durdent, a sea trout fishery using fixed nets in the area of the swaying of the tides. This activity, very much in use in the eastern English Channel and along the southern shoreline of the North Sea, not only for catching certain amphibiotic species but also species that are strictly of the sea, represents a sizeable cause of the mortality rate for salmonid populations during their coastal migrations. The studies begun on this fishery in 1980 have as their goal to assess the size of the salmonid catches near the site, especially of sea trout, and to acquire more complete knowledge of the catch, biology... |

European hake is one of the most important commercial species of the North East Atlantic. Its biology is quite well known in spite of age reading problems. This report provides a review of the state of knowledge based on updated data, specially for parameters used in the working groups in charge of stocks assessments. The fisheries for hake are essentially sequential. In recent years fishing mortalities have been moderate and the over exploitation of the stocks is due to the excessive catches of young fish and to the fishing pattern of some fleets. The result of this inappropriate exploitation pattern is dangerous with a decrease of the spawning stock biomass and recrutrnent for the two stocks. |

The exploitation of amphihaline species by marine and freshwater commercial fishermen in the Loire estuary in 1989, and by marine commercial fishermen in the Adour estuary from 1985-1991 is described in this study. This fishery employs 320 fishermen and represents a commercial value of 38 million FF. This is mainly due to the exploitation of glass eel, especially in the Loire River, the landings of which have decreased alarmingly. In the Adour River, the diversity of the exploited species and the total commercial value of drift gillnet catches - on the average 43% - in this fishery are high. The landings of migratory salmonid species are high and they may attain 25% of the total commercial value. This study emphasizes the uniqueness, the socio-economic... |

The principal objective of the work carried out in the deep waters adjoining the island shelf around Martinique between July 1991 and april 1992 was to establish an initial inventory of potentially exploitable deep benthic resources. The cylindrical lobster pot used during fishing experiments allowed the catch of a varied carcinological marine organisms of which six species at least have economic interest : 5 species of shrimp all belonging to the sub-order of Caridea of the Pandalidae family : Plesionika edwardsi, P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus, P.laevis, Heterocarpus ensifer and H.laevigatus, and one species of prawn of the Nephropidae family : Eunephrops cadenasi. The yields, compared to those of commercial fishermen, were medium or good for Plesionika... |

This paper contains a description of the Lepidoptera, exclusive of the Tortricidae, Tineidae, Orneodidae, and Pterophoridae, of t he Seychelles Archipelago, and of the coral islands of Aldabra, Assumption, Cosmoledo and Astove, though the collections from the three latter islands are too small to be considered representative. The collections from the Seychelles were obtained very largely by Mr Hugh Scott, who spent eight months (July 1905-March 1909) in the group and devoted the whole time to entomological collecting.
