Fecundity of the spider crab Mithraculus forceps (Decapoda, Mithracidae) from the northeastern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Cobo,Valter J.; Okamori,Claudia M..
Fecundity is one of the most important parameters in studying the reproductive output of Pleocyemata decapods, especially because of its relationship to the efficiency of population replacement. Knowledge of fecundity provides basic elements for understanding the reproductive strategies, dynamics, and evolution of a given population. The present investigation provides informations on fecundity, egg size, egg loss, and the relationship between fecundity and selected environmental features, for the spider crab Mithraculus forceps (A. Milne Edwards, 1875). Ovigerous crabs were collected each month during 2000, by SCUBA diving, at Couves Island (23º25'25"S, 44º52'03"W) on the northeastern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 40 ovigerous females...

Crescimento de Callinectes sapidus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Portunidae) no estuário da laguna dos Patos, RS, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ferreira,Leonardo S.; D'Incao,Fernando.

Evaluation of the stomach contents of Eriphia gonagra from a rocky shore in the southeastern Brazilian coast Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Rodrigues,Larissa R.; Góes,João M. de; Silva,Thiago E. da; Teixeira,Gustavo M.; Andrade,Luciana S. de; Fransozo,Adilson.
ABSTRACT The rocky shores of Praia Grande, in Ubatuba (São Paulo, Brazil), are formed by rock and Sabellaridae polychaete sandy reefs. These microenvironments offer shelters and foraging areas for several marine organisms and attracts many tourists. The crab Eriphia gonagra (Fabricius, 1781) inhabits these structures and can be used as a bioindicator, since they may be affected by anthropogenic actions. This study evaluated the stomach contents and characterized the feeding habits of an E. gonagra population, inhabiting the rocky shores from Praia Grande, taking into account the sex, size, and microhabitat. Monthly samplings were performed in 1996 and 1997 and the crabs were manually captured on the rocky surface or into of the sand reefs. So, the...

Estructura del aparato reproductor masculino de Uca uruguayensis (Decapoda, Ocypodidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Cuartas,Elena Irene; Petriella,Ana María.
The structure of the male reproductive tract was described in Uca uruguayensis Nobili, 1901, by using histological methods, scanning electron microscopy techniques, and stereoscopic observations of fresh material. The aim of this work was to establish the functional changes associated with sexual maturation. The morphology of the first (G1) and second (G2) pair of gonopods was described. The male reproductive tract consists of paired organs: testes, and tubular and convoluted vas deferens (VD) ending with a terminal ampoule (TA).The (VD) is composed of three parts: anterior (AVD), medial (MVD) and posterior (PVD). The AVD and MVD are lined by a single layer of cubical cells. The PVD epithelial cells are columnar with elongated nuclei. The terminal ampoule...

Ahyong, Shane T.; Ng, Peter K. L..
The cyclodorippoid crabs from the Philippines collected by the PANGLAO 2004-2005 and AURORA 2007 expeditions are reported. Five species of Cyclodorippidae are reported: Corycodus mina x sp. nov., Ketamia depressa (Ihle, 1916), Krangalangia spinosa (Zarenkov, 1970), Tymolus brucei Tavares, 1991, and Xeinostoma sakaii Tavares, 1993. Corycodus minax is the second species of the genus to be recorded from the Philippines and is most similar to C. merweae Tavares, 1993, from South Africa. Krangalangia spinosa is reported for the first time from the Philippines. Sexual dimorphism in the length of the walking legs (pereopods 2 and 3) is reported for Tymolus brucei and may be a general feature of cyclodorippoids. One new species of Cymonomidae, Cymonomus liui sp....

Spatial and temporal distribution of brachyuran crab larvae in Ibiraquera Lagoon, southern Brazil ArchiMer
Brandão, Manoela; Stumpf, Liane; Macedo-soares, Luis; Freire, Andrea.
This study investigated the abundance and composition of brachyuran crab larvae in the four subsystems of Ibiraquera Lagoon throughout the year. A colder and drier period was detected, contrasting with warm months during which salinity varied depending on rainfall and whether the sand bar was open or closed. The mean density of brachyuran zoeae was 540 ± 96 (SE) larvae · 100 m-3. Mean density was significantly (p<0.05) higher in three subsystems during April. Saco Lagoon (the outer subsystem) exhibited significantly higher (p<0.05) mean density in July, August, October, November and December 2004. Larvae from the families Portunidae, Menippidae, Panopeidae, Ocypodidae and Varunidae were found in Ibiraquera Lagoon. Neohelice granulata Dana, 1851 was...

Re-evaluation of the Cancridae Latreille, 1802 (Decapoda: Brachyura) including three new genera and three new species Naturalis
Schweitzer, Carrie E.; Feldmann, Rodney M..
New fossils referable to the Cancridae Latreille, 1802 extend the known stratigraphic range of the family into the middle Eocene and the geographic range into South America. Each genus within the family has been reevaluated within the context of the new material. A suite of diagnostic characters for each cancrid genus makes it possible to assign both extant and fossil specimens to genera and the two cancrid subfamilies, the Cancrinae Latreille, 1802, and Lobocarcininae Beurlen, 1930, based solely upon dorsal carapace morphology. Cheliped morphology is useful in assigning genera to the family but is significantly less useful at the subfamily and generic level. Each of the four subgenera sensu Nations (1975), Cancer Linnaeus, 1758, Glebocarcinus Nations,...

Platypodiella georgei spec. nov. (Brachyura: Xanthidae), a new crab from the island of St. Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, with notes on the genus Platypodiella Guinot, 1967 Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Türkay, M..
A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data...

[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: A re-evaluation of extinct European crabs referred to the genus Calappilia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 (Brachyura, Calappidae) Naturalis
Busulini, A.; Beschin, C.; Tessier, G..
A reassessment of extinct species, fourteen in all, found in Europe and attributed to Calappilia has been carried out. For each species a short diagnosis is provided, and where necessary, its systematic position is reconsidered. Calappilia dacica lyrata is here elevated to species rank, while C. mainii is reassigned to Stenodromia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 and C. sexdentata is considered to be a nomen nudum. Photographs are provided of all type specimens available to us; most of these had so far been known only from (partially inaccurate) line drawings. For the first time, well-preserved chelipeds are described for the genus, having been found in articulation with a carapace of C. dacica.

A revision of the genus Matuta Weber, 1795 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Calappidae) Naturalis
Galil, B.S.; Clark, P.F..
Introduction Amid the gaudily-coloured parade of tropical crabs few are more splendidly patterned than the matutine genera. But the patterns decorating these species brought about taxonomic disarray and from the very beginning they baffled their researchers. Already in 1817 Leach remarked: "the characters which distinguish the species are very obscure". MacLeay (1838) wrote in exasperation: "there are many species confounded together under the name Matuta victor, I do not consider the above names of the family and genus to possess any authority". Stebbing (1905) concurred: "From the interminable discussion of minute differences, as to the importance of which distinguished authors neither agree one with another nor always with themselves, it seems safe to...

Evolution of crabs – history and deconstruction of a prime example of convergence Naturalis
Scholtz, G..
Compared with the elongate bodies of shrimps or lobsters, crabs are characterised by a compact body organisation with a depressed, short carapace and a ventrally folded pleon. The evolutionary transformation from a lobster-like crustacean towards a crab is called ‘carcinization’ and has been interpreted as a dramatic morphological change. Nevertheless, the crab-shape evolved convergently in a number of lineages within Decapoda. Accordingly, numerous hypotheses about internal and external factors have been presented, which all try to explain these frequent convergent carcinization events despite the seemingly fundamental changes in the body organisation. However, what a crab is lies greatly in the eye of the beholder and most of the hypotheses about the...
