Introduction to exploring opportunities for advancing collaborative adaptive management (CAM): integrating experience and practice Ecology and Society
Galat, David L.; Department of Fisheries & Wildlife Sciences, University of Missouri; GalatD@missouri.edu; Berkley, Jim; U. S. Environmental Protection Agency; berkley.jim@epa.gov.
This Special Feature of Ecology and Society seeks to communicate a practitioner’s perspective on the application of collaborative adaptive management (CAM) to contemporary natural resource management problems. One goal is to create an ongoing mechanism for dialogue that can connect practitioners, researchers, and policy makers. The core 15 papers are grouped into 3 categories that: (1) describe lessons learned through the practice of applying CAM principles to a specific project or generalizing principles from outcomes of a specific project; (2) summarize lessons learned from the author’s extensive CAM experiences; and (3) seek to be instructive of one or more CAM principles through a survey, evaluation, or comparison of multiple...

Realizing water transitions: the role of policy entrepreneurs in water policy change Ecology and Society
Huitema, Dave; Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), VU University Amsterdam; dave.huitema@ivm.vu.nl; Meijerink, Sander; Nijmegen School of Management, Radboud University Nijmegen; S.Meijerink@fm.ru.nl.
This special feature aims to further our understanding of the way in which transitions occur in water management. We contend that if we want to understand such transitions, we need to understand policy change and its opposite, policy stability. These issues have attracted considerable academic attention. Our interest is, however, very specific and thereby unique: we review the role that (groups of) individuals play in the process of preparing, instigating, and implementing policy change. In this article, a review of the literature on policy change provides the basis from which we extract a set of strategies which are available to policy entrepreneurs. The questions for the rest of this special feature are first, can we detect the influence of policy...

Foghorns to the Future: Using Knowledge and Transdisciplinarity to Navigate Complex Systems Ecology and Society
Cundill, Georgina N. R.; Rhodes University; gcundill@rides.cl; Fabricius, Christo; Rhodes University; c.fabricius@ru.ac.za; Marti, Neus; Autonomous University; neus@amauta.rcp.net.pe.
Complex systems are shaped by cross-scale interactions, nonlinear feedbacks, and uncertainty, among other factors. Transdisciplinary approaches that combine participatory and conventional methods and democratize knowledge to enable diverse inputs, including those from local, informal experts, are essential tools in understanding such systems. The metaphor of a “bridge” to overcome the divide between different disciplines and knowledge systems is often used to advocate for more inclusive approaches. However, there is a shortage of information and consensus on the process, methodologies, and techniques that are appropriate to achieve this. This paper compares two case studies from Peru and South Africa in which community-level assessments...

The importance of stakeholder engagement in ocean observation and in particular the realization of economic and societal benefits is discussed, introducing a number of overarching principles such as the convergence on common goals, effective communication, co-production of information and knowledge and the need for innovation. A series of case studies examine the role of coordinating frameworks such as the United States' Interagency Ocean Observing System (IOOS (R)), and the European Ocean Observing System (EGOS), public-private partnerships such as Project Azul and the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) and finally the role of the "third" or voluntary sector. The paper explores the value that stakeholder engagement can bring as well as making...

Teaching and Learning Through Cooperative Research Ventures AgEcon
Lindsey, Patricia J..
Classroom-based learning can be enhanced for advanced agricultural economics and agribusiness undergraduate students by engaging them as partners in an applied research project. The approach described combines research, outreach and resident instruction in a single activity that produces and extends knowledge while educating students. Many of the changes suggested for agricultural, agricultural economics and agribusiness instruction are encompassed by this approach.

Agricultural Employment Trends in an Enlarged European Union: Does the CAP Reform/Introduction Matter? AgEcon
Baum, Sabine; Cook, Peter; Stange, Henriette; Weingarten, Peter.
In the course of economic development there is a general downward trend of agricultural employment, although structural change in agriculture is often delayed. In the EU-15, agricultural employment decreased by -2.3% p.a. (measured in regular persons) and -3.0% p.a. (measured in annual working units) between 1995 and 2000. In some of the new EU Member States, employment in agriculture plummeted in the early 1990s, whereas in others it increased during the first years of transition and has served as a social buffer in times of economic hardship. The most important determinants of agricultural employment changes are labor saving technical progress, the macroeconomic environment, the farm structure, socio-economic characteristics of the farmer and...

Basin-level use and productivity of water: examples from South Asia AgEcon
Molden, David J.; Sakthivadivel, Ramasamy; Habib, Zaigham.
Discusses and illustrates concepts for identifying ways of improving productivity of water within basins. The results of applying a water accounting procedure to four sub-basins in South Asia (Bhakra in India; Chishtian in Pakistan; Huruluwewa in northern Sri Lanka; and Kirindi Oya in southern Sri Lanka) are presented. The methodology used identifies the quantities and productivity of various uses of water within a basin. This information is then used to identify the water-saving potential, and the means of improving the productivity of the managed supplies.

Urban wastewater: A valuable resource for agriculture - A case study from Haroonabad, Pakistan AgEcon

Farming communities in water-scarce regions increasingly practice the use of urban wastewater in agriculture. Untreated urban wastewater is generally considered unacceptable for direct use because of potential health risks. However, in many parts of the world, poor farmers in peri-urban areas use untreated wastewater. This situation is considered likely to continue even in the foreseeable future due to the high investment cost associated with the installation of treatment facilities.
