Diel feeding periodicity, daily ration and relative food consumption in some fish populations in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka ArchiMer
Weliange, Wasantha S.; Amarasinghe, Upali S.; Moreau, Jacques; Villanueva, Ching-maria.
Twelve diel surveys were carried out in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka viz. Minneriya, Udawalawe and Victoria, to investigate diel feeding patterns, daily ration and relative food consumption in fish populations. Stomach content weights of different size classes of various fish species in the three reservoirs in 12 diel surveys were analysed using an iterative method, MAXIMS. Predominantly herbivorous or detritivorous fish species such as Amblypharyngodon melettinus and Oreochromis niloticus exhibited one peak in the diel feeding pattern. Two peak feeding periods were evident in predominantly insectivores and/or zooplanktivores (e. g., Puntius chola and Rasbora daniconius) and interestingly in macrophyte feeders (i.e., Etroplus suratensis, Puntius...

Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. ArchiMer
Luguet, P; Moreau, Y.
If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation.

Descripción Anatómica, Histológica y Ultraestructural de la Branquia e Hígado de Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) International Journal of Morphology
Torres R,G. A; González P,S; Peña S,E.

A systematic revision of the piscivorous haplochromine Cichlidae (Pisces: Teleostei) of Lake Victoria (East Africa). Part I Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van.
The distinction between Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis, and the distinction between these and other cichlid genera of Lake Victoria as proposed by Greenwood (1980), is demonstrated to be artificial. The BM(NH) collections of Haplochromis dichrourus and H. pellegrini were found to be polyspecific and are redescribed. On the basis of specimens formerly included in H. pellegrini a new species is described. Five new species are described based on material from the Mwanza Gulf and Maisome Island. Specimens of H. dichrourus from different areas of Lake Victoria are described separately to demonstrate geographic variation.

Taxonomical and ecological description of a species complex of zooplanktivorous and insectivorous cichlids from Lake Victoria Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van; Witte, F..
The zooplanktivorous Haplochromis tanaos spec. nov., and the morphologically very similar but insectivorous Haplochromis thereuterion spec. nov., from Lake Victoria (East Africa) are described and compared to Haplochromis diplotaenia Regan & Trewavas, 1928, a similar species which is known only from the holotype. Intraspecific variation is described for both new species. Ecological data of the new species are compared to those of known zooplanktivores and insectivores from the Mwanza Gulf area. Both new species disappeared concurrently with the Nile perch (Lates) upsurge early in the 1980's. The recent occurrence of individuals closely resembling the new species, in a different habitat close to the original one, is analysed.

The generic classification of the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria, East Africa Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van.
In chronologic order of publication, all papers dealing with the systematics of haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria are analysed with regard to the generic classification of the species. Taxonomists have disputed and changed the generic classification soon after cichlids from Lake Victoria were first described. At the turn of the century, different opinions among taxonomists working on Lake Victoria haplochromines were mainly based on the fact that they studied different material. The study of more extensive collections yielded the impression that differences between the species are gradual, rendering the delimitation of genera problematic. Recently, an attempt to use cladistic methods for the unravelling of the phylogeny of the haplochromines has...

The more stirring the better: cichlid fishes associate with foraging potamotrygonid rays Neotropical Ichthyology
Garrone-Neto,Domingos; Sazima,Ivan.
One hunting tactic of freshwater rays (Potamotrygonidae), termed "undulate the disc and stir substrate", is here reported to attract cichlids at two sites in the upper Paraná River. The ray species involved in such association are Potamotrygon falkneri and P. motoro, whose activity attract four cichlid species, namely Crenicichla britskii, Satanoperca pappaterra, Cichla kelberi, and Geophagus proximus, the two latter non-native species to the study area. The cichlids approach a ray when it begins to stir the substrate and form sediment clouds, and remain close to the ray during this activity only. The association is here regarded as following behavior even if very transient.

Social and reproductive physiology and behavior of the Neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus under laboratory conditions Neotropical Ichthyology
Alonso,Felipe; Cánepa,Maximiliano; Moreira,Renata Guimarães; Pandolfi,Matías.
In this work we describe for the first time the social and reproductive behavior of the Neotropical fish Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840) [Perciformes: Cichlidae], endemic to the Paraná River basin, using a comprehensive-integral approach, including morphological and physiological features. This substrate breeding fish has biparental care of the fry and presents a dominance hierarchy that determines access to breeding territories among males, and to males with territories among females. Gregarious behavior associated with a pale body color, was observed before reproductive behaviors started. Afterwards, a dominance hierarchy was established through aggressive interactions. Territorial individuals had bright body color patterns and non territorial an...

A new species of Gymnogeophagus from the río Negro and río Tacuarí basins, Uruguay (Teleostei: Perciformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
González-Bergonzoni,Iván; Loureiro,Marcelo; Oviedo,Sebastián.
The new cichlid species Gymnogeophagus tiraparae is described from the río Negro and río Tacuarí basins (Uruguay). The new species is distinguished from other Gymnogeophagus species by the unique presence of the following characters: adipose hump on head deeper than the dorsal-fin upper border, adipose hump with anterior profile vertical, extending from the upper lip to the dorsal-fin origin, absence of transversal bands on body; two horizontal series of moderately elongated light blue dots between dorsal fin spines, and a series of light blue stripes between soft rays, sometimes merged with the second series of elongated dots, always with a red ground color between series of dots, and caudal fin with dots vertically aligned on its distal border. Environmental enrichment reduces aggression of pearl cichlid, Geophagus brasiliensis, during resident-intruder interactions Neotropical Ichthyology
Kadry,Vivian Oliveira; Barreto,Rodrigo Egydio.
Among fishes, when residents and intruders fight, residents usually win, most likely because they value the residence more than intruders. We hypothesized that enriched environments increase the value of an area in dispute, causing a resident to more fiercely defend a resource-rich environment than a poor one. However, in the present study, intruder-resident tests with the pearl cichlid, Geophagus brasiliensis, showed environmental enrichment actually reduces aggression and can even lead to co-habitation without fighting. Additionally, in our experiments, the prior residence effect occurred irrespective of enrichment condition. Decreased visibility from increased habitat complexity reduces interactions between fish and consequently might explain the lower...

A new species of Gymnogeophagus Miranda Ribeiro from Uruguay (Teleostei: Cichliformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
Loureiro,Marcelo; Zarucki,Matías; Malabarba,Luiz R.; González-Bergonzoni,Iván.
ABSTRACT We describe a new species of a substrate-brooding Gymnogeophagus , based on coloration characters. The new species can be distinguished from the remaining substrate-brooding species in the genus by the unique pigmentation of the dorsal fin which consists of light blue, diagonal stripes over a red background in the spiny section and a combination of round, elliptic, and elongated bright blue spots over a red background in the soft section. It can be further distinguished from all other species of Gymnogeophagus by the following combination of characters: a discontinuous bright blue band above the upper lateral line in the humeral area, light blue roundish spots over a red to orange background on the anal fin, and conspicuous bright blue horizontal...

The population structure and reproductive condition of the Sinaloa cichlid Cichlasoma beani from samples obtained from June 2000 to July 2001 were determined. Samples in the first week each month from the largest trader of tilapia in the Aguamilpa Reservoir in Mexico and were caught in gillnets (9.6 and 11.4 cm stretch-mesh size). Of 596 specimens, there were 427 males and 169 females; monthly sex ratio, frequency of lengths by the multinomial distribution, timing of reproduction, condition index, and size at first maturity was determined. Differences in the sex ratio and monthly totals were significant, favoring males, except for September 2000 and March 2001. From one (August 2000) to three modal groups (July 2000 and June 2001) were identified by size....

Reproductive behavior and parental roles of the cichlid fish Laetacara araguaiae Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Freitas,Eliane Gonçalves-de.
We described the reproductive behavior of the small South American cichlid Laetacara araguaiae in streams from Brazil. We predicted that this species will show reproductive cooperation and division of labor between males and females in a similar way presented by other substrate-spawner cichlids. Thus, we studied 34 pairs in the pre-spawning (n = 11), egg/wriggler (n = 11) and fry (n = 12) phases. In the pre-spawning phase both sexes become involved in nest building and territorial defense, but females emphasizes building nest (p = 0.03), while males invest more time in territorial defense (p = 0.04). After spawning, male and female alternate between rearing eggs and defending nest in the territory. In the egg/wriggler phase females devotes more time...

Dietary habits of juveniles of the Mayan cichlid, Cichlasoma urophthalmus, in mangrove ponds of an offshore islet in Belize, Central America Neotropical Ichthyology
Vaslet,Amandine; France,Christine; Baldwin,Carole C.; Feller,Ilka C..
Foraging habitats of juveniles of the Mayan cichlid, Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther, 1862), were investigated in two mangrove ponds located in Twin Cays offshore islet in Belize: Sink Hole pond (SH) and Hidden Lake pond (HL). Sink Hole pond is a semiclosed body of water, whereas Hidden Lake pond is connected by a channel to adjacent seagrass beds that surround the islet. Gut contents of 21 juvenile C. urophthalmus (9.8-13.2 cm total length) were analyzed, and five prey taxa were identified. In both mangrove ponds, C. urophthalmus were opportunistic carnivores and consumed primarily crustaceans. Plant material and detritus present in gut contents were most likely ingested incidentally when the fish foraged on small invertebrates. Carbon isotopic values of...

Color changing and behavioral context in the Amazonian Dwarf Cichlid Apistogramma hippolytae (Perciformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
Rodrigues,Raoni Rosa; Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre; Zuanon,Jansen; Del-Claro,Kleber.
Animal coloration has many functions, and fishes are noted among vertebrates for presenting a wide variety of color patterns. Although in marine fishes the relationship between body coloration and behavioral context is well documented, there's not much information about freshwater fishes. Here we describe color patterns displayed by the dwarf cichlid Apistogramma hippolytae and suggest that these patterns are dependent on different social and behavioral settings. Field observations were conducted underwater in a pond in Central Amazonia, Brazil. We recorded six body coloration patterns related to seven different kinds of behavioral activities: foraging, resting, reproductive and agonistic displays, aggression (attacking and fleeing) and parental care....
