The environmental recovery of the main tourist destinations in the Colombian Caribbean during the Covid-19 quarantine Boletín de Investigaciones
Correa-Ramirez,Marco; Pacheco,Wilberto; Ricaurte-Villota,Constanza.
ABSTRACT To counteract the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic disease, the Colombian government decreed a quarantine period from March 24 to July 1, 2020, which forced the cessation of tourist activities and the closure of the main tourist destinations of the Colombian Caribbean: Santa Marta, Cartagena, and San Andrés. During this period, a significant increase in the environmental quality of these coastal zones was perceived. To quantify environmental changes in the coastal zone, the variation in chlorophyll concentration and total suspended solids observed by the Sentinel-3 satellite mission, 30 days before and after the start of the quarantine, was analyzed. The results showed a decrease in the concentration of chlorophyll (> 20 %) and suspended solids...

Seasonal variability of coastal water quality in bay of Bengal and Palk Strait, Tamilnadu, Southeast Coast of India BABT
Srinivasan,Viswanathan; Natesan,Usha; Parthasarathy,Anitha.
The aim of this work was to study the physicochemical parameters of water quality collected from 12 sampling stations from Topputhurai to Muthupet in Vedaranyam located on the southeast coast of India from January to December 2008. Results showed that the DO and nutrients were the maximum in the Bay of Bengal during the monsoon period. High concentration of the nutrients in summer season was obtained near the Muthupet mangroves compared to the Palk Strait, which showed that this acted as a source of nutrients to the adjacent coastal waters. Low concentrations of the nutrients observed in the monsoon could be attributed to the terrestrial runoff from Muthupet lagoon. The physicochemical characteristics of coastal waters between the Point Calimere and...

Influence of effluents from a Wastewater Treatment Plant on nutrient distribution in a coastal creek from southern Brazil BABT
Santos,Isaac Rodrigues; Costa,Ronaldo Cataldo; Freitas,Ubiratan; Fillmann,Gilberto.
The hypothesis that effluents treated through activated sludge process cause changes in nutrient biogeochemistry of receiving water bodies was investigated in Vieira creek, southern Brazil. Dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, and pH did not vary among the sampling stations. Nutrient, biochemical oxygen demand, and conductivity values were significantly higher downstream from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents. Further downstream, nitrate concentrations were higher due to ammonium nitrification, organic matter remineralization and/or the occurrence of unidentified sources. Per capita nutrient emission factors were estimated to be 0.16 kg P.yr-1 and 4.14 kg N.yr-1. Under pristine conditions, low N:P ratios were observed, which were significantly...

Factors Influencing Adaptive Marine Governance in a Developing Country Context: a Case Study of Southern Kenya Ecology and Society
Evans, Louisa S.; The School of International Development, University of East Anglia; louisa.evans@jcu.edu.au; Brown, Katrina; The School of International Development, University of East Anglia; k.brown@uea.ac.uk; Allison, Edward H.; The WorldFish Center; e.allison@cgiar.org.
Adaptive governance can be conceptualized as distinct phases of: 1) understanding environmental change; 2) using this understanding to inform decision making; and 3) acting on decisions in a manner that sustains resilience of desirable system states. Using this analytical framework, we explore governance in practice in two case studies in Kenya, that reflect the “messiness” of contemporary coastal governance in many developing country contexts. Findings suggest that adaptive marine governance is unlikely to be a smooth process of learning, knowledge sharing, and responding. There are institutional, sociocultural, and political factors, past and present, that influence each phase of both local and state decision making. New local...

IBSS Repository

Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Buchet, Vincent; Dupuy, Beatrice.

Chabertd'Hieres, G.
The discussions about "water dynamics" have dealt with the knowledge of long-term water mass circulation (from several days to several months), by the effects of three parameters: tides near limits and in the Seine Bay, turbid freshwater discharge (Seine river) and winds. This communication gives information about Eulerian and Lagrangian drift, used for residual current exhibition.

Temporal changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter sedimentation in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Charles, F; Medernach, L; Jordana, E; Nozais, C; Vetion, G; Colomines, Jc.
Gross sedimentation rates (GSRs) were monitored together with meteorological data and the main biochemical characteristics of the collected material (i.e. organic content, C, N, total proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and available proteins) over a three year cycle at a shallow station (18 m) of the Bay of Banyuls, France. GSRs were between 0.26 (11/04/92) and 317.75 gDW m(-2) d(-1) (18/02/94). They followed an annual cycle with low and relatively constant values during spring and summer and high, variable Values during fall and winter. During the study GSRs correlated poorly (state of the sea, precipitation) or even non-significantly (wind speed) with the main meteorological parameters. GSRs correlated negatively with the organic content of the material...

Lannuzel, Reva.
Coastal zones represent key systems in biogeochemical cycle couplings between continents, oceans and the atmosphere transporting considerable amounts of matter, energy and nutrients (C, N, P et Si) from land to sea. Despite its relatively modest surface area (7 % of the global ocean surface), this zone accounts for 14–30 % of all oceanic primary production. The present study deals with nutrients and carbon dynamics during a full hydrologic cycle in 2017 over the terrestrial-aquatic continuum formed by the Poitevin Marsh-Aiguillon Bay- Breton Sound to better understand terrestrial export influence on the coastal zone. Carbon and nutrient concentrations were sampled twice a month over heterogeneous sites (estuaries, channels and coastal sites) to integrate...

Laurier, Fabien.
The Seine estuary and its adjacent region Pays de Caux are two significant sources of mercury for coastal marine environments. It is carried through fluvial means for the Seine bay and through karstic fresh water emergences for Pays de Caux's coastal area. Mercury cycle in the Seine estuary and bay is affected by additional anthropical activities. The estuary's maximal turbidity area acts like a trap and a chemical reactor for fluvial mercury. Within this area, we can confirm: (i) the non conservative behaviour of dissolved mercury; (ii) mercury enrichment of particles when comparing the Seine's and marine environment and we suggest mercury particle redistribution from the organic fraction to the oxyhydroxydes fraction. A large fraction of mercury is...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Polsenaere, Pierre; Le Moine, Olivier; Guesdon, Stephane; Bechemin, Christian.
This work presents interactions between quantitative and qualitative river freshwater inputs and the shellfish farming (oyster and mussel) in the Pertuis Charentais. The quantity of freshwater (i.e. salinity) seems to have a weak influence on the shellfish farming contrarily to its quality determined by particulate and dissolved matters contained in the water. In autumn and winter, large precipitations have a "globally positive" effect amending the coastal ecosystem. Associated dissolved nutriments and the organic matter largely determine the quality of the coming spring growth for bred shellfish, itself controlling in turn the annual yield efficiencies. However, in winter their effects are postponed because of strong mineral load, low luminosity and...

The french approach to managing water resources in the mediterranean and the new European Water Framework Directive ArchiMer
Henocque, Yves; Andral, Bruno.
The main content of the new European Water Framework Directive is presented. Within its river basin management approach, a special mention of coastal waters status is made. Among the issues at stake are the setting up of river basin management plans, including coastal waters, and water quality assessment system leading to an harmonized definition of quality objectives and their appropriate indicators. The Rhone-Mediterranean-Corsica Water Master Plan, launched in 1996, is considered to be well fitted to this river basin approach and the necessary tools which go with it. It shows up how a river quality assessment system (SEQ) can be adapted to the coastal waters and how it can progressively lead to an efficient set of publishable environmental and...

Flood inputs in a Mediterranean coastal zone impacted by a large urban area: Dynamic and fate of trace metals ArchiMer
Oursel, B.; Garnier, C.; Zebracki, Mathilde; Durrieu, G.; Pairaud, Ivane; Omanović, D.; Cossa, Daniel; Lucas, Yves.
Trace elements and organic carbon inputs to the Mediterranean sea from an urbanized area (Marseille city) were studied and characterized during flood events. Inputs were brought to the sea by two small coastal rivers whose waters were mixed together and also with treated wastewaters (TWW) just before discharge. The monitoring of the rivers during flood events showed the high temporal dynamics of water flow, suspended particulate matter (SPM), organic carbon and trace metals concentrations, typical of small coastal Mediterranean rivers and requiring an appropriate sampling strategy. Dissolved/particulate partition coefficient (log Kd) in rivers during floods remained quasi-constant for a given trace element, but differed from one element to another...
