Serum cortisol, lactate and creatinine concentrations in Thoroughbred fillies of different ages and states of training Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Nogueira,Guilherme de Paula; Barnabe,Renato Campanarut; Bedran-de-Castro,João César; Moreira,Alankardison Ferreira; Fernandes,Wilson Roberto; Mirandola,Regina Mieko Sakata; Howard,Denise Louise.
Exercise can be defined as "normal stress" stimulating body functions. Some reports suggest lactate as a stimulator of cortisol levels, while creatinine varies according to the amount of muscle tissue. In the present study we investigated the relationship between creatinine, serum lactate concentration and cortisol levels in training horses. Twenty-three Thoroughbred fillies were used, divided into 3 groups according to age and training protocol: G1, 1-2 years of age (N=7) on pasture, G2, 2-3 years (N=9) starting to be mounted, and G3, 3-4 years (N=7) racing at the Jockey Club. Blood samples were collected weekly during a six-month period at about 1:00 p.m. while the animals were resting. Cortisol was quantified with a commercial kit (Coat-a Count®) and...

Cystatin C and renal function in pediatric kidney transplant recipients BJMBR
Franco,M.C.P.; Nagasako,S.S.; Machado,P.G.; Nogueira,P.C.K.; Pestana,J.O.M.; Sesso,R..
In clinical practice, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is often determined with serum creatinine. However, studies have shown cystatin C to be a better parameter for the diagnosis of impaired renal function. We compared GFR estimated by plasma cystatin C with GFR estimated by serum creatinine in a sample of 50 pediatric renal transplant recipients and 24 healthy children. The correlation between GFR estimated by serum creatinine and by cystatin C was significant (r = 0.75; P < 0.001, Person’s correlation); however, in pediatric kidney transplant recipients, the GFR was 6.7 mL/min lower when determined using cystatin C rather than serum creatinine. Moreover, using GFR estimated by cystatin C we found that 42% of the pediatric kidney transplant...

Biodistribution of 99m technetium- labeled creatinine in healthy rats BJMBR
Yilmaz,O.; Yurt Lambrecht,F.; Soylu,A.; Durkan,K.; Kavukcu,S..
The distribution of creatinine, one of the toxic guanidine compounds, in various tissues has not been studied in detail by using radiolabeled creatinine. Our objective was to investigate the biodistribution of creatinine labeled with 99m technetium (99mTc) by the stannous (II) chloride method in healthy male Wistar rats. Quality controls were carried out by radio thin layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and paper electrophoresis. The labeling yield was 85 ± 2% under optimum conditions (pH 7 and 100 µg stannous chloride). Rats (N = 12) were injected intravenously with 99mTc-creatinine and their blood and visceral organs were evaluated for 99mTc-creatinine uptake as percent of the injected dose per gram wet weight of each tissue...

Comparative study of IgA nephropathy with and without crescents BJMBR
Bitencourt-Dias,C.; Bahiense-Oliveira,M.; Saldanha,L.B.; Barros,R.T.; Woronik,V..
Glomerular crescents were analyzed as a prognostic factor in retrospectively reviewed data from 144 patients with biopsy-proven IgA nephropathy. Crescents were found in 26 (18%) patients, and detected in 2 to 100% of glomeruli in each specimen. In 5% of the patients more than 50% of the glomeruli were affected. Thirty patients with IgA nephropathy without crescents were studied as a control group. Mean age was 30.3 ± 9.4 and 30.2 ± 12.0 years for the patients with and without crescents, respectively, and males prevailed in both groups. The length of follow-up was 23.2 ± 41.6 months for patients with crescents and 29.3 ± 35.3 months for patients without crescents. Eighty percent of the patients with crescents were hypertensive, compared to 27% of the...

Biochemical profile of amniotic fluid for the assessment of fetal and renal development BJMBR
Oliveira,F.R.; Barros,E.G.; Magalhães,J.A..
Creatinine plays a key role in the function and maturation of fetal kidneys throughout pregnancy. It is important to identify other markers that may help in the diagnosis of renal dysfunction. Our aim was to determine the profile of and the correlation between biochemical markers to be used to assess renal function and maturation of the fetus in the amniotic fluid during pregnancy and to determine the distribution of normal values for creatinine, N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), ß2-microglobulin, glucose, urea, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, uric acid, albumin, and osmolality in three gestational age groups. This was a cross-section study that assessed 115 samples of amniotic fluid during three different periods of pregnancy, i.e., 13 to 20, 27...

Evaluation of renal function in sickle cell disease patients in Brazil BJMBR
Silva Junior,G.B.; Libório,A.B.; Vieira,A.P.F.; Bem,A.X. Couto; Lopes Filho,A.S.; Figueiredo Filho,A.C.; Guedes,A.L.M.O.; Souza,J.H.; Costa,C.M.B.E.; Costa,R.; Daher,E.F..
The objective of this study was to investigate renal function in a cohort of 98 patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) followed up at a tertiary hospital in Brazil. Clinical and laboratory characteristics at the time of the most recent medical examination were analyzed. Renal function was evaluated by the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by the criteria of the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI). We compared patients with normal GFR to patients with decreased GFR (<60 mL·min-1·(1.73 m²)-1) and hyperfiltration (>120 mL·min-1·(1.73 m²)-1). Comparison between patients according to the use of hydroxyurea and comparison of clinical and laboratory parameters according to GFR were also carried out. Average patient...

Monitoring renal function: measured and estimated glomerular filtration rates - a review BJMBR
Salgado,J.V.; Neves,F.A.; Bastos,M.G.; França,A.K.; Brito,D.J.; Santos,E.M.; Salgado Filho,N..
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a world-wide public health problem, with adverse outcomes of kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, and premature death. This finding has led to the hypothesis that earlier recognition of kidney disease and successful intervention may improve outcome. The National Kidney Foundation, through its Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI), and other National institutions recommend glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for the definition, classification, screening, and monitoring of CKD. Blood creatinine clearance, the most widely used clinical marker of kidney function, is now recognized as an unreliable measure of GFR because serum creatinine is affected by age, weight, muscle mass, race, various medications, and...

Coffee hull in the diet of dairy heifers: nitrogen balance and microbial protein synthesis R. Bras. Zootec.
Souza,Alexandre Lima de; Garcia,Rasmo; Cabral,Luciano da Silva; Pereira,Mara Lúcia Albuquerque; Valadares,Rilene Ferreira Diniz.
It was evaluated nitrogen compounds and microbial protein synthesis in heifers fed diets containing coffee hulls (0.0; 8.75; 17.25; and 26.25% of dry matter) replacing ground corn concentrate at the following levels of coffee hulls in the total diet dry matter: 0.0, 3.5, 7.0 or 10.5%. It was used 24 crossbreed heifers (7/8, 15/16 and 31/32 Holstein-Zebu), which were distributed in a random block design made up accordingly to the weight of the animals. Spot samples of urine were colleted aproximatelly four hours after morning feeding and were used to estimate microbial protein synthesis by using urine purine derivatives. It was not observed effect of coffee hull levels in the diet on total nitrogen intake (160 g/day) and nitrogen excretion in the urine...
