Abstract White cheese, kashar cheese, yogurt, and ayran are among the most common products produced by the dairy industry in Turkey. The present study determined the production cost of 1 kg of these packaged products as well as the financial implications on their distribution and the total cost. The study also estimated the cost factors affecting the profitability of the products by identifying the cost differences between production regions and scales, using a mean regression model for each product. The study used the data collected through a survey involving 15 dairy plants of three different sizes located in five different regions and involved in raw milk production. The study found a 2-year average capacity utilization rate of the businesses to be... |

Fish consumption preferences are affected by individuals’ socioeconomic characteristics. The aims of the present paper were (i) to obtain information on fish consumption level and frequency; (ii) to investigate the associations between the socioeconomic characteristics of consumers and their preferences; and (iii) to examine the influence of determinants on fish consumption. Data were gathered through a questionnaire completed by a total of 127 randomly selected individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds from the Antakya, Turkey. The average consumption was found to be 2.98 kg/person/year for fish. Anchovies, gilt-head sea bream, and sea bass were reported as the most consumed three species, respectively. Significant differences in fish... |

Wildlife–vehicle collisions, especially with deer (Odocoileus spp.), elk (Cervus elaphus), and moose (Alces alces) are numerous and have shown an increasing trend over the last several decades in the United States and Canada. We calculated the costs associated with the average deer–, elk–, and moose–vehicle collision, including vehicle repair costs, human injuries and fatalities, towing, accident attendance and investigation, monetary value to hunters of the animal killed in the collision, and cost of disposal of the animal carcass. In addition, we reviewed the effectiveness and costs of 13 mitigation measures considered effective in reducing collisions with large ungulates. We conducted cost–benefit... |

Agricultural development efforts quite frequently involve programs designed to extend knowledge to farm people through various kinds of extension programs. Yet, the basic methodology for evaluating such programs is not very well developed. The typical approach is to evaluate the impact of the extension service on various measures of physical productivity, or on other characteristics of technical change. This may involve the calculation of indices of partia1 and total productivity, andlor the collection of data on rates of adoption of new modern inputs or the use of new farm practices. One objective of the present paper is to suggest the application of a methodology which appears to have promise as a means of evaluating the impact of extension programs on a... |
