Thermodymnamic properties of crambe fruits Agronomy
Oliveira, Daniel Emanuel Cabral de; Resende, Osvaldo; Costa, Lílian Moreira; Silva, Hellismar Wakson da.
This study aimed to determine and evaluate the thermodynamic properties of crambe fruit at different equilibrium moisture contents. The dynamic-gravimetric method was used to collect experimental data. Crambe fruits with an initial moisture content of approximately 26% db (dry basis) were used. The thin-layer desorption of the product was conducted at different controlled temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40, and 45°C) and at water activity levels ranging from 0.10 to 0.89 until the product reached the equilibrium moisture content at the specified air condition. In conclusion, the thermodynamic properties of crambe fruit are affected by temperature and moisture content. The isokinetic theory is valid for the desorption process, which is controlled by enthalpy,...

Nonextensive statistical mechanics: a brief review of its present status Anais da ABC (AABC)
TSALLIS,CONSTANTINO.
We briefly review the present status of nonextensive statistical mechanics. We focus on (i) the central equations of the formalism, (ii) the most recent applications in physics and other sciences, (iii) the a priori determination (from microscopic dynamics) of the entropic index q for two important classes of physical systems, namely low-dimensional maps (both dissipative and conservative) and long-range interacting many-body hamiltonian classical systems.

Bits and q-bits as versatility measures Anais da ABC (AABC)
Piqueira,José R.C..
Using Shannon information theory is a common strategy to measure any kind of variability in a signal or phenomenon. Some methods were developed to adapt information entropy measures to bird song data trying to emphasize its versatility aspect. This classical approach, using the concept of bit, produces interesting results. Now, the original idea developed in this paper is to use the quantum information theory and the quantum bit (q-bit) concept in order to provide a more complete vision of the experimental results.

Determinism, chaos, self-organization and entropy Anais da ABC (AABC)
PONTES,JOSÉ.
ABSTRACT We discuss two changes of paradigms that occurred in science along the XXth century: the end of the mechanist determinism, and the end of the apparent incompatibility between biology, where emergence of order is law, and physics, postulating a progressive loss of order in natural systems. We recognize today that three mechanisms play a major role in the building of order: the nonlinear nature of most evolution laws, along with distance to equilibrium, and with the new paradigm, that emerged in the last forty years, as we recognize that networks present collective order properties not found in the individual nodes. We also address the result presented by Blumenfeld (L.A. Blumenfeld, Problems of Biological Physics, Springer, Berlin, 1981) showing...

Heart rate recovery after exercise: relations to heart rate variability and complexity BJMBR
Javorka,M.; Zila,I.; Balhárek,T.; Javorka,K..
Physical exercise is associated with parasympathetic withdrawal and increased sympathetic activity resulting in heart rate increase. The rate of post-exercise cardiodeceleration is used as an index of cardiac vagal reactivation. Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) and complexity can provide useful information about autonomic control of the cardiovascular system. The aim of the present study was to ascertain the association between heart rate decrease after exercise and HRV parameters. Heart rate was monitored in 17 healthy male subjects (mean age: 20 years) during the pre-exercise phase (25 min supine, 5 min standing), during exercise (8 min of the step test with an ascending frequency corresponding to 70% of individual maximal power output) and...

Kinetics of high-Level of ß-glucosidase production by a 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant of Humicola lanuginosa in submerged fermentation BJM
Bokhari,Syed Ali Imran; Latif,Farooq; Rajoka,Muhammad Ibrahim.
A 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant (M7) of Humicola lanuginosa was obtained by exposing conidia to γ-rays and permitting expression in broth containing 0.6% 2-deoxyglucose (DG) and cellobiose (1%) before plating on DG esculin-ferric ammonium citrate agar medium from which colonies showing faster and bigger blackening zones were selected. Kinetic parameters for enhanced ß-glucosidase (BGL) synthesis by M7 were achieved when corncobs acted as the carbon source. The combination between corncobs and corn steep liquor was the best to support higher values of all product formation kinetic parameters. Effect of temperature on the kinetic and thermodynamic attributes of BGL production equilibrium in the wild organismand M7was studied using batch process at eight...

Modeling Isosteric Heat of Soya Bean for Desorption Energy Estimation Using Neural Network Approach Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Amiri Chayjan,Reza; Esna-Ashari,Mahmood.
Sorption isotherm of soya bean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) was obtained by the dynamic experimental method. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used for modeling soya bean equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Thermodynamic equations and trained ANN for prediction of two thermodynamic properties of net isosteric heat and entropy of soya bean were utilized. The ANN models were better compared with mathematical models. In this study, the isosteric heat and entropy of sorption of soya bean were separately predicted by two power models as a EMC function. Predictive power of the models was high (R² ≈ 0.99). At the moisture content above 11% (dry basis, db), isosteric heat and entropy of sorption of soya bean were smoothly decreased, while they were...

Thermodynamic properties of moisture desorption isotherms of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) seeds Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Zeymer,Juliana Soares; Corrêa,Paulo Cesar; Oliveira,Gabriel Henrique Horta de; Araujo,Marcos Eduardo Viana de; Magalhães,Diana Soares.
ABSTRACT Studies about the thermodynamic properties of ryegrass seeds are necessary to improve post-harvest processes, relating the factors that affect product quality with the interaction between water and its chemical components. Given the importance of recognizing and understanding the intrinsic behavior of water in ryegrass seeds and providing data for the improvement of industrial drying equipment, this work aimed to calculate and evaluate the thermodynamic properties of moisture desorption of ryegrass seeds as a function of the equilibrium moisture content. Ryegrass seeds with initial moisture content of 10.4 (% d.b.) was used. The equilibrium moisture content of seeds was determined by static-gravimetric method at different temperatures (10, 20, 30,...

Moisture sorption isotherms of sunflower seeds: Thermodynamic analysis Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Campos,Renata Cássia; Correa,Paulo César; Zaidan,Iasmine Ramos; Zaidan,Úrsula Ramos; Leite,Rildo Araújo.
ABSTRACT The study of the thermodynamic properties provides the knowledge of the sorbent affinity by the water and the spontaneity of the sorption process, important to design drying equipment and to predict hygroscopic behavior during storage. This work aimed to determine and evaluate isotherms of hygroscopic equilibrium and thermodynamic properties for different equilibrium conditions (water contents and temperatures) in sunflower seeds, using the indirect static method. Sunflower seeds with initial water content of 0.164 (decimal, dry basis - d.b.) were used. Fifteen mathematical models were tested for hygroscopic equilibrium modeling, and the Smith model presented the best fit. It was verified that the thermodynamic properties were influenced by the...

Thermodynamic properties of Buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) tree gum Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
SILVA,Diego Aires da; PENA,Rosinelson da Silva.
Abstract Moisture adsorption and desorption isotherms from buriti tree gum (BG) were obtained at different temperatures (25 to 55 °C) in a water activity range of 0.1 to 0.9. The isotherms were classified as type II. The hysteresis loop and moisture of the monolayer decreased as temperature increased and Halsey’s equation proved able to predict with good precision the product’s sorption isotherms in the conditions studied. BG’s isosteric heats of moisture adsorption and desorption were close to the latent heat of vaporization of pure water for moisture levels above 30 g/100 g db and exponentially increased below that level. The enthalpy-entropy compensation theory and the isokinetic relationship were applied and indicated that BG’s moisture adsorption and...

Hyper-production of a thermotolerant β-xylosidase by a deoxy-D-glucose and cycloheximide resistant mutant derivative of Kluyveromyces marxianus PPY 125 Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rajoka,Muhammad Ibrahim; Khan,Sana.
Production of β-xylosidaseby a cycloheximide and 2-deoxy-D-glucose-resistant mutant of Kluyveromyces marxianus PPY125 was studied when cultured on growth media containing galactose, glucose, xylose, cellobiose, sucrose and lactose as carbon sources. Xylose, cellobiose, lactose and sucrose were the key substrates. Both K. marxianus PPY125 and its mutant (M 125) supported maximum β-xylosidase specific product yield (Y P/X) following growth on xylose. Basal level of activity was observed in non-induced cultures grown on glucose. The mutant produced 1.5 to 2-fold more β-xylosidase than that produced by the wild cells. Synthesis of β-xylosidase was regulated by an induction mechanism in both wild and mutant cells. Addition of...

MOISTURE SORPTION ISOTHERMS OF QUINOA SEEDS: THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS REA
Bustos-Vanegas,Jaime D.; Corrêa,Paulo C.; Zeymer,Juliana S.; Baptestini,Fernanda M.; Campos,Renata C..
ABSTRACT The present research aimed to study the water sorption behavior of quinoa seeds analyzing the hysteresis phenomenon and determining thermodynamic properties. Static gravimetric technique was used to obtain the equilibrium moisture content of quinoa seeds in different temperature conditions (15, 25, 35 e 50 °C) and relative humidity (between 11 and 96%). Equilibrium moisture content data were adjusted by eight mathematical models and the Modified Halsey model was the best one to describe the water sorption phenomena of quinoa seeds. Hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content of quinoa seeds is directly proportional to the water activity and decreases with increasing temperature. The hysteresis phenomena were observed throughout the range of water...

THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF BARU FRUITS (Dipteryx alata Vogel) REA
Resende,Osvaldo; Oliveira,Daniel E. C. DE; Costa,Lílian M.; Ferreira Júnior,Weder N..
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine and evaluate the thermodynamic properties for different equilibrium moisture contents in baru fruits (Dipteryx alata Vogel), using the direct static method to obtain the experimental data. The Modified Halsey model was used to determine the thermodynamic properties of baru fruits. Results concluded that thermodynamic properties are influenced by moisture content. The water vaporization latent heat increases with the decrease in equilibrium moisture content. The baru fruit desorption process is controlled by enthalpy. Gibbs free energy is positive for the temperatures studied with the increase over desorption, which describes a non-spontaneous process.

Curva de sobrevivência e estimativa de entropia em Lucilia cuprina (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fernandes,Francely M.; Lapola,David M.; Neregato,Rodrigo; Carvalho,Marcelo H. de; Von Zuben,Claudio J..
Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) is a cosmopolite blowfly species of medical and veterinary importance because it produces myiasis, mainly in ovine. In order to evaluate the demographic characteristics of this species, survivorship curves for 327 adult males and 323 adult females, from generation F1 maintained under experimental conditions, were obtained. Entropy was utilized as the estimator of the survival pattern to quantify the mortality distribution of individuals as a function of age. The entropy values 0.216 (males) and 0.303 (females) were obtained. These results denote that, considering the survivorship interval until the death of the last individual for each sex, the males present a tendency of mortality in more advanced age intervals, in...

This paper documents the computer code implementing the CE-SAM estimation technique in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System). It defines the estimation problem in a deterministic setting; extends the approach to include a stochastic treatment of errors in control totals; summarizes the equations describing CE technique for estimating a consistent SAM starting from an inconsistent data set estimated with error; and provides the GAMS code.

LEAST SQUARES AND ENTROPY AS PENALTY FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V..
Mathematical measures of entropy as defined by Shannon (1948) and Kullback and Leibler (1951) are currently in vogue in the field of econometrics, primarily due to the comprehensive work by Golan, Judge, and Miller (1996). In this paper, an alternative interpretation of the entropy measure as a penalty function over deviations is presented. Using this interpretation, a number of parallels are drawn with least squares estimators, and it is demonstrated that, with a minor modification of the traditional least squares estimator, both approaches may be applied to the general linear model. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, and a philosophical approach to the selection of estimation technique is suggested.
